    The guy ate the mushroom because Belters don't waste resources.
    The water thief mentioned that the big gangsters had left the station...those small points are important to following the plot.
    When Amos had a gun to Holden's head, he was looking at Naomi for instructions. Amos had already said that he couldn't determine whether or not to commit murder...but looked to Naomi to give him direction.

      😮 I literally never knew why he ate that mushroom. Thanks for that. It makes perfect sense.
      I noticed that the water thief mentioned that the big gangsters had left the station. Miller didn't seem too phased about it, so I let it go too.
      Yeah, Amos surprised me in that scene. It seemed over-the-top impulsive and cold-blooded to just point the gun at Holden like that. Yikes.

    3:20 He pulled a mushroom off the piping and took a bite. The implications regard the distressed resources on the station, prompting the worker to not want to waste the opportunity. Additionally, we (laymen) can reason that in a controlled environment like a space station, the 'ecosystem' wouldn't facilitate toxic fungi. It's just growing off the water and ambient nutrients/buildup in the dank environment. It wouldn't be like the forest where all kinds of things can grow because there'd be a wider variety of food. Just a harmless mushroom near the moisture buildup.

      Yeah, he swiped it up and ate it so fast that I didn't even register that it was a mushroom. At this early point in the show, I hadn't really grasped the magnitude of stress and hunger levels, so it just seemed like a strange character action, that was totally glossed over as if it wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

    Bit of advice: there´s very little fluff in this series, so if you keep talking over dialogue or looking away, you´ll begin to gradually miss the relevance of, or where things came from, to a point where you´ll be totally lost. This show demands 100% attention, so don´t be shy to pause the episodes if you need to talk. Hope you caught some of those during editing,
    7:47 - Coriolis effect (slightly exaggerated).
    8:47 - Her chin. Are you seeing this on a minuscule display?
    11:44 - Answers will come, along with many more questions. All in due time. You´re not supposed to know things before the characters do (most of the time).
    12:44 - Outer Planets Alliance.
    13:41 - What do you mean by the "Belt is on Saturn"? No one is living on or near Saturn, there are just ice mining/collecting ships that go there. Belters live on planetoids and large asteroids located mainly on the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. You might look up at a solar system map, since apart from the 100% man-made stations, which are fictitious, all locations do exist in real life.

      Lmao @ "Belt is on Saturn?" As far as I was concerned, everything was fictitious, from Ceres to them colonizing Mars, to them moving around in spaceships. I jumped to the wrong conclusion about Saturn lol I think I correct it in future episodes though.
      Also, I miss a lot of things because the pace of this show is lightening fast. Fortunately, I get to catch things during editing.

    Something we see in The Expanse is that both communication and detection take time, as they are limited to the speed of light. At the distances involved, even light takes time to get from its point of origin to its target.

    • @flowstatereactions
      @flowstatereactions  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That's true. Everything takes longer than in the other sci-fi shows I'm used to.

    The OPA is the Outer Planet's Alliance; think of them as Al Kaeda or the Irish Revolutionary Army. The Belt is the Asteroid Belt, along with the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Earth and Mars are the two "powers" in the Expanse. Earth has the numbers and resources, while Mars has the scientific know-how, which leads to superior technologies (like stealth).

      Yeah, I finally noticed it during editing. I was looking for a scar that looked discolored, but it was the same as her skin tone, so I missed it.

      Ok, I should've said lighter, because it was. I was looking for something darker or obviously disfigured. But I saw it standing out boldly on her chin during editing lol It was like it was glowing. I don't know how I missed it. But Agent X missed it too, and we were watching it on a big screen tv, so I don't know. I guess we were both looking for something grotesque lol

      I wish I had known that a lot of these places weren't completely fictitious when I first watched it. @@flowstatereactions The Expanse is one of the most grounded SF stories there are. Both the books and TV series. Another one is "For All Mankind". Good suggestion to do that show after this. Btw, "For All Mankind" gives characters less plot armor than this show and Game of Thrones...

    Detective Miller's drink pours in a slight spiral (exaggerated so that you don't miss it) for two reasons: (1) Ceres is a "spun up" Asteroid. They create a gravity alternative by spinning the asteroid really fast - think like the feeling of being flung outwards you get on a fast carousel ride - so "down" is outwards and "up" is towards the centre of the asteroid, and (2) Miller is in one of the less nice parts to be - closer to the centre - so the side-effects of faking gravity like that are stronger. This is called the Coriolis Effect. You'd see it on that carousel ride if you tried swinging a plumb bob back and forth. It is also the reason that hurricanes always move Northwards or Southwards from the Equator on Earth, and never cross it.

    • @flowstatereactions
      @flowstatereactions  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm glad they gave us that particular scene. It was rather cool to see. Everything in this show moves so fast, so if they mentioned the science behind it all, then I may have missed it, but I'll catch it during editing.

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @flowstatereactions this show does not hold your hand. It would rather leave you puzzled than explain something explicitly. I'm not sure they ever do directly explain Coriolis, but there are a number of little "show don't tell" moments that reference it, and the fact that the colonised asteroids were artificially spun up. The water in the condescending administrator's office overlooking the green space with the dry patch of grass doesn't flow like that, which implies he is closer to the surface where the Coriolis is much less (and life is less dizzy!) Segregation based on social status

    Mushrooms and fungi are major food sources in the Belt, so when the mechanic grabs a piece of fungus and starts eating it, this is just like someone on Earth picking an apple off of a tree they pass and eating it.

    Show. Don't tell. I just noticed that one of the most significant lines of dialogue in the entire series happened in this episode. And it ends up being a throw away line. The ultimate example of 'show, don't tell.' A million dollars if you can figure out the line and what it means!

      @@flowstatereactions Yeah! I'm glad I got your attention. I can't say what the line is at risk of proving a spoiler. And I hate spoilers. To the point I live in frustration because commenters come to EVERY Expanse reaction and give away information about the books and how they tie into the show. And every time I ask Reactors to try and avoid any information about the books and how it relates to the show. And EVERY time I fail in my mission.
      When I first watched The Expanse, I had no idea a series of books came first. So as the show played out I had no expectations of what might happen, or where something would be resolved. -And it was GLORIOUS, not knowing. Just letting the surprise and unexpected nature of the show unfold. Mysterious. On it's own pace. Unfortunately, that privilege gets denied every TH-cam reactor because people will jump on board anxious to contribute information, even if it means crushing some unexpected twists and turns into expected unexpected twists and turns. If that makes sense. Hopefully, there's a chance you can remain blissfully unaware of the books and how they fit in to the show.... at least until the end of season 3.
      That would be the best. Everyone loves a good mystery.
      But getting back to this mystery. Take your wildest imagination of what is going on with this show... and multiply that by 50. It's so beyond crazy how imaginative this show is going to be. Bigger. Badder. Wilder. Crazier. Jaw dropping good. And the wildest thing, one of the more fascinating story points, the writers made no effort to really push or explain at all. I only discovered it by watching a TH-cam video of one of the writers, Ty Frank pointing out a really cool concept that get completely neglected by the fans. But it's there. So that's my tease. Something to keep you guessing. And at the appropriate time, when I can't spoil anything, I promise to bring the subject up again and explain myself. It is really cool. I hope you can guess it.
      Enjoying your reactions. Looking forward to you reaching some really cool points in the story. You will love this show.

      Just so you know, we've already finished the show without spoilers. :) Most people don't check out my Patreon so they assume that my TH-cam posts are current viewings even though I just posted the full-length video of Season 5 Episode 2 "Churn" yesterday on Patreon. I don't usually mention it in the comments, since most folks are looking for quick reactions, not the full episodes. So you can go ahead and tell me since you will not spoil anything. Also, as you watch these TH-cam videos, you will see that I am one of the rare people who was not spoiled at all. I did not know that there was a book series until I posted the edited version of episode 1 on TH-cam. And as you mentioned, the commenters let me know right away. :)

      @@flowstatereactions The following comments come courtesy of Ty Frank, co-author of the books and the creator of The Expanse. He mentions this in one of his TH-cam broadcasts "Ty and That Guy", where he and Wes Chatham talk about the show and a million other things. Very entertaining. Now that you're done with the series you should look at an episode or two of their podcast. Anyway, Frank surprised me bringing up back story that is only glimpsed in the broadcast series. It's just the coolest idea and I have no idea why they did not make this more front and center in the show. Maybe it "spoils" the books that didn't get covered for television? Not having read the books I can't say. Anywhere here it is:
      The first season is filled with speculation as to why Detective Miller was so obsessed with Julie Mao. Anderson Dawes said, "You're in love with Julie Mao." How could that be true? He never met her. How can you fall in love with someone you never met???
      And the answer is: Miller did meet Julie. Long before what happens in season 2. In fact, it's clear he met Julie as early as episode 2 of Season One. Remember in Episode 2, he mentions to his former partner that Julie wore her scar as a act of defiance against her father. And her partner replied, "did she tell you that?" Miller doesn't answer. But his hesitant, reluctant non answer is in fact him hiding a "Yes. She told me." He doesn't say it out loud because he knows she wouldn't believe him. And he barely believes it himself.
      Then again, in the first episode of season 2. Miller is having a chat with Naomi. Here, he mentions to Naomi the exact conversation Julie will say to him weeks before it happens on Eros. How could he know what she would say on Eros in the future? Because she told him in the past. Before he even took a shuttle to Eros.
      Which brings us to the science fiction part mentioned by Ty Frank. The Protomolecule breaks the rules of physics.... including Time.
      Either time was broken when he and Julie had their fateful last kiss. Or more likely it was broken when Eros turned itself into a space ship. If we assume Eros moved by folding Space, it would move by folding Time as well. Since Space and Time for one cohesive fabric of Space Time. From that point, flashing backwards and forward through time there would be a ripple or folding. A time wave that disrupts linear time. Where suddenly Miller would have flashes of being with Julie and having conversations. In episode one of Season 2, he mentions that they've talked on numerous occasions. Not just a one off where she says you belong with me.
      For Miller, it would be impossible to comprehend what was happening, having these folding moments in time meeting Julie 'appearing' then vanishing out of no where. It's impossible to tell if the moments would occur in normal linear time or time dilation. Either way he would instantly be drawn like a moth to flame. Where the event on Eros cements his need to resolve the mystery that leads him to Eros and his doom.
      It's amazing to think this happened with so little attention to the concept by the writers. And yet they did write the clues into the dialogue. And we all miss it. It also clears up the debate on whether Miller and Julie should have kissed. Ty Frank was opposed to it. Thomas Jane did it without direction from the script. It was the perfect thing to have happen considering the bending of time in the story. He and Julie were an item from episode two of Season one.
