For those of you asking whats wrong with the display, short answer is NOTHING. Long answer is that Sony understand the use case for a watch and have used a transflective LCD. This allows for bright sunlight usage and this is a positive compared to other Wear devices whose reviews couldn't stop emphasising the abysmal visibility in direct sunlight. For those watches they have to ramp up screen brightness which in turn goes hand in hand with severe reductions in battery life. With the Smartwatch 3 you can continue to enjoy lengthy battery life, use it in direct sunlight and not suffer any loss of functionality.
I bought myself one of these for Christmas and love it. There are a couple of pointers I can make from my experience: I generally get up to 3 days battery and that`s using Watchmake pro, what I did was manage what apps sent me notifications and blocked all the pointless ones. This of course saves a fair amount of power. The screen is really nice and clear, even in sun light, I have it set on pretty low brightness and have no problems seeing it in any light conditions. I really love my SW3, massive upgrade from the SW2 and does all I could want from a watch and more.
I got mine from Amazon, still use it daily even now. I don`t use the tilt to wake feature, I use touch to wake and still get average 3 to 4 days between charges.
Google transflective LCDs. They didn't skimp on the display. Its actually more expensive than a normal LCD. That LCD is the reason you can see whats on the screen even with the backlight at its lowest level.
If that's the case then smartwatches aren't ready for prime time in my opinion. The display looks like crap compared to current AMOLED and IPS displays.
If you prefer form over function you have the Moto360 and G Watch R. Otherwise, all are first gen Wear products, and far from being ready for prime time. We're still a few years away from having mature hardware, and a mature ecosystem. But you got to start somewhere ;)
Gotta say I was really impressed with this video. Just incredibly well done. I just bought this watch and I've been going through the reviews of it on TH-cam. This is definitely the best video. Maybe not quality wise in regards to video quality and panning shots of the watch sitting in a tree. But this video had an incredibly quality when it came to the content that you put into it. Good job man, keep up the awesome work!
Hi Stephen, nice video. I just bought one of these from Argos (UK) for £149.99. I am really pleased with it, looks and feels great, fell in love with the quality clasp and No I haven't yet come across the clasp opening if you jar your hand. I found that if you turn GPS off when you don't need it, the battery lasts a loooooot longer. That coupled with the upgrade to Android 5 makes the battery life even better. I fully charge mine in the morning at around 7.00am and looking at it this morning at 7.00am the battery is around 56%. I like metal straps more than any other but this wasn't available but if they release a metal one without the watch, I'll certainly consider buying it as long as the price isn't too much.
I have owned the Smartwatch 3 for about a month now and have to disagree with you on an number of points. First is the screen. Its a transreflective screen wich allows for better viewing in direct sunlight. I sold my Samsung Neo because of the poor visibility when exercising outside. Second is the battery life. I am not sure what setting you have on the watch you were using but my watch lasts at least two days. I do not use the wrist motion to activate the backlight since it is not needed to see the time. Finally, I can't get the internal GPS to work with anything including MyTracks. It has to be tethered to my phone to get GPS tracking. Otherwise I am very pleased with this watch. There are apps that allow you to design or download which is something I enjoy tinkering with.(Sony, hurry up and make alternative wristbands!)
Great review thanks! I've owned one of these watches for just over a year now and still love it. This is certainly one of the better smartwatches on the market, and now that it's been out a while you can pick it up at a much lower prices than initially. I have my settings a bit different to what you're using in the video though - I have the "always on" display turned on which is great because you don't need to shake the watch or touch it to view the time. In my opinion a watch that doesn't have an always on option is not worth owning. In the always on mode, I usually get about 2 days use between charges., but I am also running it airplane mode all the time unless I want to connect to my phone - so that probably saves some battery. I use the Sony SW3 on hikes through rough scrub and have never had it fall off my wrist. Occasionally it may snag on a branch, but that just unclasps it and it catches on my hand without falling off, so I don't think the clasp strength is an issue. It certainly never comes unclasped in normal use indoors. The phone is remarkably resilient to the rough treatment it gets on my hikes too - and waterproof, so you just rinse off the sweat when you're done. Very practical. I use the HandyGPS app which supports the stand alone GPS capabilities in this watch. The only real downside if using the GPS on this watch is battery life. You're lucky to get 4 hours use before it needs a recharge when using it like this. Another app which I'd definitely recommend for this watch is Handy List Plus. This allows you to edit and view "to do" and "shopping" lists directly on your wrist without having your phone with you. Apparently Sony is now working on the Smartwatch 4, which may be released sometime in 2016. This may be one to look out for. But also, I like the look of the Moto 360 Sport which has similar features, including a GPS, but is round, so probably better looking. It also has a heart monitor if you're into that.
Retina Display is Apple's thing. Triluminous Display is Sony's & I'm pretty sure they're using Triluminous on this one. Smartwatch3 is the one of the watch with the most dense pixels. I see no reason to complain about that display.
They don't put a higher resolution display because it will drain the hell out of the battery trying to push more pixels and might make it laggy, so they might have to increase the size of the battery and watch
I'm loving my smartwatch 3 to be honest battery has taken a hit after the last update though but it still lasts the whole day but the only smartwatch I know to last longer is the pebbles watches that lasts 4 to 5 days. I'm happy to be honest.
+gaming and console tech BLOCKS modular smartwatch has two special features when it comes to battery life. Kinetic charging and Extra battery module. So you'll have to worry less when you ran out of battery. I guess it's the only smartwatch I knew that has these kind of features. www.kickstarter.com/projects/2106691934/blocks-the-worlds-first-modular-smartwatch
Its for battery life. Simple as that. More pixels more power and when everyone's biggest complaint is primarily about battery life for smart watch tech its not actually an arguable point as of now. Honestly i'm not apposed to weight, I've been saying for a long time that if they would just increase the weight of phones by 1/3 for just battery space i'd be happy. I don't need a paper thing phone. My next phone will be the Z3 compact. PPI is a non issue. if its above 300 ppi and you're more than a foot away you get the same experience. The design philosophy behind Sony's phones is greatly under appreciated by the mass consumer market. They are so caught up in 4K (or UHD what ever add gimmick they currently use) screens and other junk that phones haven't really made any practical progress. That's where Sony comes in. Great features, Camera is one of the absolute best and actually produces the most realistic photos vs the over saturation of others. I like reality, thus my phones screen and camera should look like reality not the old Jeff Foxworthy joke about shiny bass boats. Again, the features of the smart watch 3 are great especially compared to the competition. Function is Sony's focus while everyone else focuses on form. Eventually the market will rebound inwards to reasonable when the bigger, faster more epic wears off. Phones already to more than they logically should for their form factor. I'm a technophile, an actual technophile. Not an e-peener(that's your electronic penis..which you measure against others e-peens) Much like over clocking processors org GPUs etc, Once you're running the software at max settings, getting anything more out of your hardware isn't going to benefit you. You're just wasting time, money and electricity. The cycle of mobile electronics should focus on battery not everything that uses battery. Once youve extended life of the device on one charge to a large enough margin, then, and only then, do you begin to increase features that add consumption. I'd really like a phone that could go 3 or 4 days of normal use on one charge. 300ppi should be the focus. not some standardized resolution. depending on the screens dimensions will determine the resolution. Maintain 300ppi and youre good to what ever size you stretch to or shrink to. Consumers just need to be more savvy vs falling for stunts. Look at Samsungs curved displays. If you have an IMAX screen that wraps around you sure, but if its not large enough to reach your peripheral vision then youre only sacrificing viewing angle for those who arent dead center. as well as deistorting the image. We record flat not fish eyed. While some IMAX films are formatted for curves again, it only works if its large enough for your peripheral vision. Shop smarter people, then the products we'll get will be really awesome. Like a phone you can go camping with for a week, take awesome photos with or video then come home and charge it back up. but until the consumer market changes from being awestruck by big numbers versus performance we wont get anything like it.
A later update improved the battery life, and I can now squeeze 2 days out of it...I think the clasp issue is related to your device though as I've never had that issue.
Thanks @Stephen for a nice reviews. does mental version can change the wrist strap to black or other colors? I gonna buy Mental once + black wrist strap :)
They never ever bring the best djissel first because they know you will buy it anyway! All company’s do it this way because if they dont .... well i think you know why! Nice review !
I am in Sweden. It costed 1800 SEK(approx) here at an offer time.(Now the prices have reduced a lot I guess). Regarding Straps, you need to be careful in choosing it. I use the rubber one since I use it for Swimming and Running. But if you are going to use it for your professional use, then you have to options, Leather strap and Metal. Look vise metal is Awesome. But again, if you are regular at sports, better go for Rubber straps.. Quality of the Strap has been decent. I am using it for 6 months and so far it is good ..

My recommendation is to back up you phone then do a factory reset first install your smartwatch app then see if that works. If it works then start installing all your apps one by one to see if it is one of the apps on you phone that is causing this interference. If that doesn't work then sorry about all the work... i think if this included a hr monitor it would have been a huge threat to fitbit like devices. ( which arent very waterproof) def not ip68 there like 3 atm.
+CoverBY12 Yes, you need a compatible phone to be able to install apps, and get notifications. Android phones running 4.3 or later will work with it according to the Sony website. 7:06 because this display works better in sun light with less battery power than ips screen
Great video and answered at lot of questions I didn't know I had. But I was hoping for little more review on the software side as well

Why are you complaining about charging? You can just take out the watch face and bam, there go all your problems.

I agree..

Bottom line though? Let's be 100% honest. What exactly is the point in a "Smart watch"?
I gave this video a thumbs down when he said "why can't Sony put a retina display on this"

have you updated the new Android Wear since this Review? how does it work with Runkeeper, Google Fit, etc?

I wonder if I should get the Smartwatch 3 or the Suntoo Ambit 3 or the Moto 360 sport.
can u reply on sms using this watch?or just view notification?
If you just pop the watch out of the band, that'll be easier to plug the charging cable
A later update improved the battery life, and I can now squeeze 2 days out of it...I think the clasp issue is related to your device though as I've never had that issue.
How close does the phone need to be to the watch for you to receive notifications etc?
Thanks for the review! Just ordered one.
Thanks @Stephen for a nice reviews.
does mental version can change the wrist strap to black or other colors?
I gonna buy Mental once + black wrist strap :)
Pitou Khmer black white blue or steel
Can you make/receive calls and text on it?
can i take the watch off of the rubber and apply regular watch straps? I don't like the bands, they look quite dorky.
Daveclap No, you can't. You have to use the official ones
AMEN brother...I returned mine because of the lack of GPS type apps and the screen resolution.
Nice review! Helped me make my choice. Ordering one today.
Oh really?!?!
Marissa Ortiz Haha!! Gold... who won by the way?
Honestly, too much of talking. I would love to see you play around with some of the app rather than showing the hardware.
Exactly
What model Hamilton is that? Very nice!
great review and info on the watch... but just a point about the display
not really a fair comparison between a smartwatch display to a phone! right?
Can the display stay on instead of having to touch the screen to enable?

this or moto 1st gen?? pls rply
So what's wrong with the screen exactly? Not bright enough? Bad in sunlight? Visible pixels? Or something else?
Does it also work to make a call, like smartwatch made in china?
do you need to tap the screen everytime u want to see the clock? is there any always-on option, that dont eat the battery much?
No.. in settings you have options to have the screen on. This does not consume a lot of battery..
Shyam Ananthakrishnan is there a function where u can raise your wrist and view the clock? Is that an Android Wear function?
Yes ..It is available and works pretty fine and is useful too.. This feature is called "Tilt to Wake". You can enable/Disable this from Settings.
Shyam Ananthakrishnan thanks mate! How much did u buy it? Is the strap good?
I am in Sweden. It costed 1800 SEK(approx) here at an offer time.(Now the prices have reduced a lot I guess). Regarding Straps, you need to be careful in choosing it. I use the rubber one since I use it for Swimming and Running. But if you are going to use it for your professional use, then you have to options, Leather strap and Metal. Look vise metal is Awesome. hello there, can the built in memory of the watch be used to save and view notes??
Netra Kai Yes
Do you have to keep tapping the watch to check the time? If so, that would annoy me like crazy....
Hav e you got to keep touching screen to wake it up? No tilt action?
Nope, it has a tilt action!
Can this watch do some audio recording? Or maybe can download audio recording apps?
yes, there is name appilcation "Small app Recording"
Will this work with iOS
No you'll have to wait for the Apple Watch.

Pretty sure there's an app for both.
Sony has on the fine print on their site that it will not getting Android Ware 2.0, it will stay at 1.5.
I wouldn't say this is a first generation SmartWatch from Sony, as they have two before that hence the '3' they started long ago when they brought out the first SmartWatch also known as LiveView, then SmartWatch 2, although this is the first Android Wear Sony SmartWatch.
Is this works on iPhone 5S?
Thanks!

+CoverBY12 Yes, you need a compatible phone to be able to install apps, and get notifications. Android phones running 4.3 or later will work with it according to the Sony website. However, you can run the watch entirely in airplane mode, like I do, once you've installed what you need on it if you don't care about notifications.
well, it is the 3rd gen product for sony...right?
