Alexis, You are just the BEST!!! I love learning with you as it is fun. lessons are clear and so thorough and easy to understand!! I so appreciate your sharing with us so passionately your knowledge and your gift of teaching. I will be going to France in September.
Merci beaucoup pour cette nouvelle et superbe leçon et thème de la semaine pour apprendre mieux et plus grammaire française, thanks a lot for this magnificent and wonderful theme of the week for learning and understand more french grammar and french vocabulary
Thank you Alexa! Because of this lesson I understood that my ex teacher didn't know this topic as he translated to me "Je suis en train de travial" like "I have a lot of job to do".
love your video lessons! I am about to take the French government exam in Canada and this helps me practice and learn more. Do you know the exams structures in Canada?
One I'm curious about is when to use de and when to use du... Duolingo isn't very clear on that. I was understanding it as de is of and du is some, but then location is strange
Du (de le) is used before a masculine noun it is used when you say that you have some of something Je mange du pain (I eat bread) De would be used when you have a specific quantity or using adverbs of quantity (beaucoup, trop, assez, etc..) Je mange cinq tranches de pain (I ate 5 slices of bread) Je mange trop de pain (I ate too much bread) Bonus: use en to replace the noun when using a specific quantity and the topic had already been established Combien des tranches de pain tu avais mangé? (How many slices of bread have you eaten?) J'en mange cinq, J'avais la dalle (I ate 5 of them, I was starving)
@@Gary-pe4ce that actually helps alot. But wait, quick question. The past tense of "I eat/am eating" is still "je mange"? I mean contextual sentence structure should explain which tense, but even still, that's going to get really confusing..
@@bobgade6733 the past tense is mangé, whats good about past tense is that all objects use this conjugation. Je mangé Tu mangé Il/elle/on mangé Nous mangé Vous mangé Ils/elles mangé
@@bobgade6733 and in terms of i eat vs i am eating, french does not really have a continous action example words ending with -ing to be honest it is safe to say that it is almost treated as continous (I am eating) but can be used as i eat in the context that you say that eat something in particular but does not happen at the moment "oui, je mange de la viande" (yes, I eat meat). Really it comes down to what the other person says or asks "Qu'est que tu manges?" (What are you eating?) "Je mange la viande" (I am eating meat) As oppose to "Tu manges de la viande?" (Do you eat meat?) "Oui, je mange de la viande" (yes I eat meat) Bonus use le to replace objects that are not a person when using reflexive verbs Je le mange (I eat it/I am eating it) If you want to say in a continous action that you are eating Je suis en train de manger. (I am in the process of eating) in the context that you have been interrupted while you were eating. The reason suis was not used in earlier sentence is because manger does not use être as its auxillary verb.
Hi Alexa, your method is really lovely.Do you that most African languages construct their sentences like the French not English...eg "croix rouge" not "red cross" . However, there's a tribe in north eastern Uganda with strictly masculine and feminine rules. Did you know that?
I will never learn conjugation. 36 years since my 5 semesters of Russian language, and now trying to pick up French. Is it possible some people just can’t ever learn conjugation? I’m probably too close to cognitive decline to learn anything now. But I try.
Ou… Que ce que example Je suis en être de cuisine en par example bon? Translation: is the example “I am eating (in the process of eating) a good example?
en train de means in the process of. en être de means to be of it. you want to describe that you were in the process of something using être makes it come off as you are the verb, which does not make sense.
Bonjour, Alexa ! I thought I'd let you know that for me, there was a problem with the streaming for most of your explanation of the phrases. Perhaps that's why others asked if the live was on or if it was real...or whatever. I tried to get the point across with "Ne marche pas" and next time I promise to use the entire phrase, Le video ne marche pas. :) Also, please let us know when a support guide is available. (!)
Living in france for almost a year, your videos have had a great impact on my understanding of french
