Even though I grew up in Long Lake and hiked around the Adirondacks my whole life, I've only once been briefly to Massawepie, and had no idea of the Grass River rail trail.

The rail trail is definitely obscure, there is a DEC sign board, with a map, near where it starts, but no signs to actually point the way. And the sign board is new, just a couple of years old. I think that DEC is trying make some of these little used places more accessible. Also, the 2nd half of the road down to where the rail trail starts is pretty rough right now, but I was there last week and it looks like the town has started grading it, which make it much better.

Thanks for sharing, I knew the beauty of Massawepie being a former scout but didn’t know about the easement. Awesome video and pictures

Appreciate the content, I’m up north in Canada and this is only about 2.2 hours from me, will definitely be checking this out in the next couple of weeks 🙏

I have had this on my list for a while now! I just stopped by this last week to see where to launch the canoe from to head out to the camping sites. I also started down the road on the esker and decided to back up since it was not "officially" open yet and could see I would have a difficult time turning around if I ran into any difficulties along the way. I would like to paddle the outlet to Grasse River and head upstream past Burnt Rock and end at the road. Looks so beautiful! Jeff

Getting through all of your videos, would like to know if you would comment on the equipment you use for photos and videos.

I use a Panasonic Lumix G9. Main lens are the 100-400 zoom and 12-35 zooms. This is a micro 4/3 (M43) system so the effective focal lengths are 200-800 and 24-70. I also use a zoom N1 to record audio. I use this setup because with care the quality is excellent, but mostly because they are smaller, lighter and much cheaper than equivalent full frame setups.

@@hikelonglake Thanks very much! I actually never owned a micro 4/3 but I never would have expected the quality to be so suberb! I have been using Nikon full frames for a long time. As a young man I traveled to the ADK many times to hike the high peaks (I got to about 32). I lived about 5 hours away and had a young family (I am 74 now). I would often leave on Friday after work, drive up, sleep in my car and get a hike in. Leass often I would backpack to get to the inner peaks. The ADK is the most special place on earth to me, and there is nothing more exciting than crossing the "blu line!" Thanks for sharing your adventures!

How far down the Massawepie road can you drive? I plan on taking a trip there in September.

You can drive to where the old railroad right of way crosses the road, something like 5 miles. You can actually go past the RR crossing, maybe another mile, but there's not much there. Then you come to a gate.
