    I've been a working photographer for over fifty years. About 25 years ago I was in Los Angeles on a shoot and a friend and I went on a street photo safari. He handed me his M6 and said, "Try this." I sarcastically asked him why I wanted me to shoot with a doctor's camera, referring to the "Leica status symbol." I had been shooting exclusively with Nikons in 35mm. I used the Leica for two days, went home, processed the film and was poleaxed. I was still in semi-denial so a few weeks later I had another shoot in LA and my friend took me to Samy's camera. I'm cheap, so I bought a very nice Leicaflex and two lenses for $700. I really wanted to see if it was my imagination or I was seeing black magic. That converted me. I now shoot with a pristine M-P Type 240 I purchased a year ago for a great price with less than 400 actuations. Thereafter I sold my M8 and M9, which more than paid for the M-P. The M-P is the finest camera I have ever used. I will never sell it. All this being said I still shoot with two Fuji cameras. In my opinion Fuji has the best sensors and color science, full stop. I have an X-Pro1 and and E-3, which is my grab and go camera. I also shoot with a Lumix S1R, which is in a class by itself. When I want to create. When I want to write visual music, the Leica stands alone.

      Great story - I’m getting the feeling that Leica cameras carry the same attraction as Fujifilm cameras - as they just make you want to get out and shoot. Loving the Q so far 👏

      My Leica story is different, I’ve always been fascinated by journalists when I was 10 years of age and most of them were shooting with Leica. I didn’t know what Leica was till I started photography. I searched, “camera with a red dot.” Blew my mind how much it is! 5 years ago, I couldn’t even imagine being able to shoot one, now I have an SL2-s and Leica 24-70. It felt great at first but it felt lonely after. It was my dream to shoot with it, I wish I waited longer. After a year of pure love, I woke up today looking into trading it. I guess, at the end of the day, I don’t want to be a loner but I have nobody to share the same enthusiasm for the brand because it isn’t normal to have. Nobody even wants to shoot with me as a group. Like, it’s just a camera, my skills are still absolute noob.

      Everyone is a loner when it comes to photography ... Everyone and anyone who is of any value as a photographer is a loner because it is YOUR work and YOUR vision and YOUR tool(s) that YOU choose to use to create YOUR vision. Who the heck cares what the others think about your gear? @@iKIMshuffle

    nearly 40 years ago a co-worker and I were asked to take pictures at a company event. I had a Canon system, he had a Leica M3 and we shot the event with two rolls of Ectachrome film from the same batch. The rolls were processed at the same lab at the same time and returned to us. Putting them on a light table and scrambling them up, you could pick out the Leica images. Sole me. Hello Leica!

    Well done Chris! I have a Q from a couple of years and also have a Fuji kit. What you can get from a Q's Summilux 28mm, from f/1.7 to f/16, is unmatched by any other camera/lens. Autofocus is very fast, but if you use manual focus you are "really" working with a manual focus lens. If you set it to infinity at f/1.7 you get perfect focus at infinity (like it used to be!). 24 Mpx on a full frame is the sweet spot for digital photography, IMHO. Colors are Leica and if you work the DNG in black and white you will see what kind of files you can get from that sensor. It's easy to use with a very simple menu. the only thing to keep in mind is to be careful not to burn the highlights, it's very easy, in fact in high contrast conditions I always underexpose a little. shadow recovery is fantastic. A dream of a camera. My dream for the future: a normal Leica Q, 24 Mpx (no M no SL2) with some interchangeable lenses. nothing else is needed. Have fun!

    • @Dpul945
      @Dpul945 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Couldnt agree more. The Q is actually better than the Q2 IMVHO, Ive had the Q, Q2 and Q2 mono and I prefer the Q over them all. I also use the SL2-S's for work and they are also incredible cameras with exceptional low light performance, better than any other camera I have used, Sony, Canon, Nikon. The SL2-S makes you want to shoot with a variety of choices, I have a 24-70 but I also have M mount lenses. Leica really killing it at the moment, just wish the prices were a bit easier to stomach

    I left Sony for Fuji and loved Fuji. Had the 100v,S10,H2S, and T5. But once you see Leica files you can’t unsee them and now I have the M11. It’s just completely a whole new world in IQ and build quality (of course it’s a $9k camera). I’ll keep the H2S for my sports photography because it’s a beast! But no way ever will I use any of the other cameras for snapping anything else.

    Hi Chris, I've had a few Fuji cameras but sold most of that kit to get a Leica Q last year. The images are great and the lens is like nothing else I've tried. I did miss Fuji so I bought an XT30 MK2 at Xmas, so now I have a foot in each camp. You'll love this camera. Looking forward to seeing your videos. By the way I switched to Capture One a couple of years ago so that covers Fuji and Leica

    You hit the nail on its head, Chris. I got a Q and a Sony RX1 in my bag and both have very similar DNA. They make easy companions and the Sony does not trail far behind the Leica. But while it is smaller and also a bit fidgety to handle, the Q is a no brainer once set up. All your focus goes to the shot you have on your mind and nothing else. It is my undisputed personal #1 among all fun cameras to use. Not to mention picture quality, of course.

    Hi Chris, I've been a dedicated Fuji user for many years and started my journey with the X-T2 and like you also have several legacy cameras (X-E1 and 2, and X-T1 converted for IR, an X-T2 and recently swapped my X-T4 for the X-T5, I've also had the X-T20 and X-T30) - But I also have the Leica Q2 which I managed to get almost as soon as it was released and I have a CL with the 18mm pancake and the kit 18-56. As much as I love the Fuji's there is just something special, different, about the Leica's and I just love the image quality from the Q2. Plus I think you nailed it when you talked about the feel of the camera in the hands - the build quality and the minimalism of the design. Great choice Chris and I hope you have many happy hours shooting with the Q.

    I purchased a Q3. I was not impressed with plastic cameras from canon and Sony and the poor product updates from Fuji. My Canon 1dx and Sony a7iii did not make me want to go out taking personal photos. They are all work tools. The Q3 on the other hand is with me everyday. It is superb in many ways.

    Hi Chris, I am, first and foremost a Fuji fan. I have the XT2, XPro2, XE2 and XE4. I also have a Q2. I guess I couldn't resist the hype and feeling that every photographer should have the Leica "experience" at some point in their lives. But, do you know what, I enjoy using my Fuji's a lot more than my Q2. (I also bought a Leica 262 for a genuine rangefinder experience but just couldn't settle with it coming from cameras with EVF's where you can see exactly what you are going to get before you take the shot). I am very much a back button focus guy and you just can't do it with the Q2 (or I assume, the Q). At the end of the day, in my opinion anyway, its all about the enjoyment you get from taking photos not how good the lens is or the camera brand image. Believe it or not, the camera I most enjoy using out of the bunch is the XE2!

    Hi Chris. I’ve been using the Ms since the early 90s from analogue to digital M3, M6, M8, M9, M240, and the M10. Using it with the legendary Mandler designed M lenses . A few years ago, I started using the GFX system . Was thinking that I needed digital medium format for serious hobby based landscape stuff. Lovely pics, sharp etc but I didn’t like the look, too clinical, too perfect - It’s just me. So I’m back to my M. Basic and simple, no frills, no bells and whistles. Pics are imperfect but looks like my M6 pics. Original and film-like. I am a simple man. Works for me. Take care.

      I have an xpro 3 and this is my same feeling. I reach for my Leica TL2 90% of the time and the Fuji just sits. On paper, the xpro 3 is pretty much better than the tl2 in every single way, but the actual look of the photos…what’s actually important…is way better on the tl2 for me. The fujis just look too sharp, too perfect, and devoid of any soul or character. The tl2 just looks clear and natural, but in a pleasing way

    Fuji are, hands down, my favourite cameras. I've been using them for years, but I recently pulled the trigger on a secondhand Leica Q2 Monochrom, having grown tired and frustrated waiting for Fuji to produce a B&W only camera. The Q2 mono is a truly fabulous camera, but if Fuji ever do get off their arses and make something similar then I can see my Q2 mono being put up for sale.

    9 out of 10 times I can tell when an image is shot on a Leica, even when seen over the internet. There is something about Leica images no other brand has. There is a sharpness and depth and unsharpness to them that's unseen. Never could afford one until 2 weeks ago I bought a Q3. So happy with it! Besides the Q3 I own a x100v. For work I use old Nikons (D810, D750), these are my workhorses. The Q3 is for works AND fun, the x100v for fun.

    Anytime I see a video like this, it always reminds me of that Top Gear episode, where Clarkson was reviewing some brand new Alfa Romeo - and he said that every time he mentions "passion" and "love" during the review of this automobile, he was going to put one pound in a jar. It was a fun episode, while talking about the car's features and whether it was good or not, its build and whatnot, we kept hearing a coin being dropped in the jar over and over... I know Leicas are amazing pieces of tech with incredible history, but I just find it funny how often it comes down to feelings, tradition, other unexplainable things, etc. This is by no means a knock on Leica, I just thought I'd share 😅

      There are many camera companies that have an incredible history, that said, like it is one of the only ones if not, the only one that did the right thing in the second world war, not to mention that they treat their employees as if they are a valuable asset to the company and not some hired hand to schlep stuff together. You pay more for the German engineering and for a company that adores employees, that kind of works for me.

    Yesterday someone was blathering on about an interview with a Nikon executive and how important the video features of the Z8 were and how he said that Nikon's emphasis is now on selling video equipment to young "creators". I thought that everybody over the age of 50 is soon going to end up shooting Leica, Hasselblad or Pentax, the only three companies who actually still care about the taking photographs part. Cameras where the stills part is not an afterthought.

    I think they are very desirable cameras but let’s not carried away, the question is what can this camera do that a Fuji x100v or any other Fuji camera can’t do if it’s in the hands of a talented photographer.
    I can see the attraction, it’s quality German engineering with some of the best glass ever made but it won’t make you a better photographer unless you are a professional and need a camera built like a tank to get knocked around.
    I hope this is not sour grapes on my part

    For many years I shot voigtlander/bessa rangefinders. That was my basis for the "leica experience". I've been shooting fuji cameras for the last several years and I missed the manual focusing. In fact I got started in fuji with x-pro3 because it seemed like it would be like using my old bessa rangefinder cameras. I cannot deal with manual focusing with fly-by-wire. In general I don't have any problem with crop sensors, but I didn't like the idea of using old manual focus lenses on a crop sensor. Don't want to waste that image circle, you know. Anyway, I bought a used leica sl2-s to support my manual focus habit. I really, really like it. Except for the size & weight. It's a beast to carry around compared to something like a x-e3 or an x100. So now I have this glorious leica camera which I barely use. I've never been too tempted by the leica Q line cuz 35mm is already too wide for me (as a single lens). I might break down some day and get a leica digital rangefinder. Dunno.

    For a moment I thought Leica was reducing their prices... Nop... It's just the 2nd hand market that started to exist for old Leica models... They continue to be crazy expensive for what they are, but midle class hipsters can finally aford to buy one, that's the reason for the "sudden nostalgia"...
    Don't get me wrong, I'm all for character, that's why I buy old lenses, and if I ever get some of the Leica old lenses (not any of them) for reasonable prices I'll get them, but I'm very happy with what I have now, one does not need to iverpay to get that look...

    I like Fuji and their colors, film sims, etc…but I don’t like their lenses at all. They’re just like all the other brands in 2023…only focused on (no pun intended) on how sharp they can get a photo and zero realness or feeling to the pics. Over sharpened is how I describe most brands and lenses today. Leica cameras and lenses tend to have a certain realness to the photos. I like to describe them as CLEAR, not over sharpened. Also, considering how much people spend on digital cameras these days and how often many people change equipment, Leica really aren’t that much more expensive in the long run. I’ve noticed most Leica owners keep their cameras for 5, 10+ years. When someone’s blowing 2-3000 usd every year or two to change brands, etc it’s not much different in price. I have an xpro 3 and honestly it sits, I always grab my TL2 as my go to camera.

    I’ve also noticed a few prominent TH-camrs switching to Leica and unfortunately I think they’ll end up alienating and losing viewers if it’s all they shoot with. For instance, three fast primes and a new M11 is going to set you back £25,000+….which in Tory/Brexit Britain is the average yearly salary. That’s obviously what puts people off…but the quality is second to none. It really is heirloom quality stuff. If you can afford it - invest! You won’t regret it.

      It's like most car TH-camrs all buying a vintage Mercedes for 100K and saying "There's sth about this car that feels right..." I bet there is! Hah 😅
      Film is expensive nowadays, scanning and printing is tough to sort out, and I truly feel that 99% of street photographers all recommending thousands of dollars worth of cameras is not the right thing to do - maybe its just me but I am missing Zenith, Olympus OM, The Nikon F5's?

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could argue film Leicas were heirloom cameras, but the reality is digital models only last a few years before their technical quality is superseded. That may not matter to the photographer, and good luck to them if user experience outweighs other considerations, or they are happy to pay a premium for whatever new camera the company releases. As a former film Leica owner, as well as film and digital cameras in various formats, the aesthetic quality of an image has almost nothing to do with the camera it was taken on.

    • @stefanvasilev9318
      @stefanvasilev9318 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@borderlands6606 Unfortunately, I think even digital camera will not suffer from the Premium Brand issue - do you think tech specs and features really matter and are a decision-making reason for Leica users? They're not the best at anything, am I wrong to say that? Brand recognition and prestige is all they bank on?

      @@stefanvasilev9318 Digital M Leicas are compact for full frame cameras, and the focusing system is suited to street photography where zone and hyperfocus are important. I wouldn't buy a Leica for any other purpose, but people are free to spend their money where they wish.

Take care.

    @Chris Orange .... Not you as well Chris, this is about the 12th maybe 13th video with this title, and it's the same with the (can't afford film, film shooters) fad / craze for CCD sensors (I never not had CCD sensor camera in my line up) .... Another youtube driven fad pushing up prices, just look at the X100V .... Bonkers
    Not everyone is buying, or can afford to buy a Leica in 2023, even if it is from MPB (not the flavour of the month with me). The only Leicas that I'd consider buying are the M8 (for that CCD sensor), M10, Q and Q2, but I can't even afford a used M8.
    My way round it is to buy a used Lumix GX7, GX8, GX9, GX800 and a Lumix 15mm f1.7 Summilux DG ASPH, or a Fuji XE-2 / XE-1 and the 18mm f2.
    I love the idea of owning a Leica, but as Hugh Brownstone points out so often, you can produce stunning shots on low a budget.
    His Budget Gourmet series of videos is great to watch if considering the purchase of a Leica.
    The youtubers just follow eachother, and Leica is just a perfect click bait item ..... Just saying.
