Thank you! It has always been a MASSIVE pet peeve of mine when the art style of a series shifts wildly from game to game. I always thought I was just a bit odd for feeling so strongly about that.
The first was always my favorite character portrait-wise, and Frontier to a lesser extent. I liked the soft, earthy colors and I think it tried the hardest to emulate the official artwork, which I’ve always really loved.
Minako Iwasaki is the name of the artist. She has been the main artist throughout the entire Rune Factory series, all the way from Rune Factory 1 on the DS.
I agree with your opinion about the overworld. I actually too prefer the overworld of the older titels. It was so charming. It had a picture book quality too it. I wish delevopers could understand that not everything has to be open world, especially if its empty and the graphic is not the best. It cheapens the look of the game so quickly /: Nevertheless im still excited for the new game and i want to support it. Dont want them to go bankrupt again lol
I second this, but I think what I'm saddest about is the fact that the villager doesn't physically meet up when there's an event anymore, it's just a marker on the map and cut into the cutscene, I feel like the charm of the older game is the fact that you see a character running to gather somewhere mean that there's a town event going on.

I'm a 28-year-old guy and even I want to see more games with great old people characters, especially as protagonists, I find old protagonists so interesting. I can think of at least 1 or 2 games where you play as an old man, but never old ladies! What's the deal with that, I wonder? Excellent coverage as always, the release day slipped my radar. Will be picking this up full price because I am just glad to see this series back.
I'm just in love with Rune Factory, grew up playing it and took me so long that I became an adult when I realized why we always start off with no memories of who we are, because the game is about making new memories, forming friendships and love. such a simple yet beautiful feel-good series. while i enjoyed Frontier and Oceans (japanese version) for being different, I much prefer the old school rpg style top-down view of the numbered titles. it just has a unique charm to it.
I'm the same - I prefer the old-school style. I know why they made the leap into open world 3D ... and I hope it pays off for them in terms of attracting new players. But it also makes it feel a bit like every other JRPG that's built on Unity out there (know what I mean?).
Seeing an old woman like you play video games melts my heart, this is how it should be. Video games dont have an age limiter, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the fact that you dont let that bother you, in fact, here you are making a video about it, which is amazing!! Rune Factory is such a great franchise and has potential to be so much more if the developers had more resources. I agree with you and genuinely hope it becomes a more mainstream game so we can see some more improvements on the graphics and optimization

I absolutely agree with your point about the loss of "worldmaps" or over world maps in modern games, it may have been done originally as a technology limitation, but there's nothing wrong with using it deliberately, especially if you don't intend to actually put anything interesting on the long slogs from one point of interest to another in a "proper" open world game.
I've been a big JRPG player for years, but some reason I'd never tried out the RF series until I picked up RF5 a few months ago. I've heard from lots of people it's not the best in the series but I've really enjoyed it so far. There's something so comforting about running around a small town farming and hanging out with the townsfolk that you see every day. I might have to pick up RF4 at some point!

I didn't even expect we would get a rune factory 5! That's so cool! I love how passionate you are about this series! One thing that I absolutely adore about rune factory is how you can level up everything! Even your walking! I love how inclusive this new game is supposed to be. I think it's such a shame that some sim games are very restrictive on marriage options.

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny was my first ever life sim and is still one of my favorite games of all time. When I saw Rune Factory 5 was returning to 3D, I knew I had to get it to try and recapture that magic of falling in love with a fictional cast like never before. I believe I can hear the Wind Shrine theme when you started opening the box!
Yay another fan of Tides Of Destiny. Ya I bought 5 for the same reason since Tides Of Destiny was the last Rune Factory game I played hmm maybe 3 but it was to combat focus for me. Tides Of Destiny had the balance for me to enjoy farming and combat. Really enjoyed catching all the monsters and trying to woo the samurai lady who insist they are a dude.just running to her with sushi in hope she will love me lol.plus the whole story part of your best friend stuck in the body than have amnesia. Plus it's nice you can woo your friend a little so you could merry her hm I think you can also play as her.
@@ThePro-ng4yt I lost my life to rune factory 3, I've played them all except frontier and I didn't really get into it until 3. My total play time was around 400hrs....then Rune factory 4 came out and I lost my soul. 832hrs total play time.
I just found your channel, it's so nice to find an older adult who also likes games. I love Rune Factory & have played about all the titles with my kids while they were growing up. When my youngest adult son found out RF5 was coming out he bought me a copy. I've been loving the newest game in the series & I hope to see more of them in the future. I like Runes much better than the Harvest Moon & Story of Seasons series.
I have honestly never heard of this franchise before but it might be something worth looking into. It sounds somewhat similar to stardew valley which i played a few months ago. Anyhow, just wanted to say i appreciate your kind of content. The trend seems to be for videos to get shorter no matter where you look and i find what you do to be very relaxing to watch :)
Yea, I'm not what you'd call a trend follower ... 😁 I just do my own thing. Yes, Rune Factory is in the tradition of farming sim games (like Stardew V.) - it grew out of the Harvest Moon franchise. My original Rune Factory video explains a bit more.
The age rating difference is really curious to me. I had no idea until you pointed it out. So hugely thankful that we were able to have a new entry in the series though. Ever since RF1 I've been totally hooked and RF4 will always have a special place in my heart!

Ahh... RF is indeed nostalgic. I only tried RF 1, 2 and 3 tho not finished all of them. I tried them after playing some Harvest Moon series. Harvest Moon was my first game on my Gameboy Pocket and naturally I picked up Rune Factory (I think for the NDS..). This video makes me want to get one of the Rune Factory games for switch! The art is just marvellous.

A new Britta video, what a wonderful surprise for my Saturday night 😊 you somehow manage to make unboxings so engaging with your insights into the series history and your careful way of displaying each item. Unfortunately I missed out on the preorder window for this edition here in Australia, saw that the North American/Earthmate edition became available on Amazon on launch day and jumped on it. I'm very excited to receive mine in a few weeks, with that excitement only slightly dampened when I remembered that being the NA edition, it would be missing the standard game box and cover. Why they continue to have this difference with many limited editions I'll never know, I'm just hoping I'll be able to source the cover art in a few months and print it myself.
Oh, good thinking to jump on the US edition! Thank goodness the Switch is not region locked. Yea, it doesn't come with the standard game case .. but otherwise identical. Apart from the cartridge! It has a tiny green band printed on it that says "Earthmate Edition". Ours has "Limited Edition" printed on that green band (I needed to zoom in to see it). Also, the NA cart looks more appealing, with the image of a Woolie on it!

I had never thought about the menu-ing in Switch games as opposed to DS/3DS until you mentioned it, but now I'm thinking on it. I think a big advantage the dual screens had was that you could put some of the heavier menu-ing on the bottom screen, while keeping the top screen free and clear for actual gameplay, or vice versa.
I’m also really excited about same sex marriage. I don’t think you even have to be interested in both genders to want to pursue them both. Just getting to know them all is nice.

Rune Factory 3 was my absolute favorite title as a child, I played an absurd amount of that game. Characters were charming, the gameplay loop was compelling and the farming sim/upgrade system was years and years ahead of its time. I thought Rune Factory 4 was also fantastic on the 3DS; I have very fond memories of being quite sick when it came out and it kept me good company while I was bedridden. To this day I have hundreds of hours on the original 3DS release, and have completed a playthrough on the switch DX version as well. Very excited to see what the newest release has to offer and indulge in a little bit of nostalgia
Did you get the switch release? RF3 got a switch release recently. I LOVE 4 and only played 4 and 5 so I was interested in 3 when I heard about the switch release approaching but I wanna play as a girl. I've played games as a male protagonist (like Batman in Arkham Asylum and a few of the Far Cry games) but because Rune Factory is very much about relationships you build with the villagers I just want to play a girl.

It's unlikely I will cover Triangle Strategy soon. Such is the mountain of games published over the last 18 months, it's really hard to get on top of that. Btw, if you weren't aware of my 3DS coverage on Twitter: I regularly post an "Appreciation Day" post about a 3DS game (29 so far) and in fact today I covered RF4 - sort of to go in tandem with RF5. 😎
I agree with the art style and humor 😅I'd really love to see them go back to more of the softer tones like maybe Rune Factory Frontier. Ideally I'd like to see them take the best elements of the different games and combine them into one. I miss the humor RF 4 had too, watching the characters talk back and forth with each other was hilarious, and I wish that had carried over to RF 5. I love all the scenes between characters they have in 5, it's great, but just casual, funny banter when the characters are hanging around each other, would have been nice. Over all I think RF did make some good progress that I want to see continue, like with the overworld, romance events are more fun, especially being broken up into multiple parts, I do really appreciate same-sex marriage being added, the amount of monsters is really cool, I find cooking a little more engaging in this one, and the fighting feels a little more fluid... when the frame rate isn't being a mess. Also this is my first time watching one of your videos, and it was a lot of fun 😄 You remind me of my grandma a bit (which I hope you don't mind me saying) I was raised on video games thanks to her, she started me off with Itchy and Scratchy on the Super Nintendo when I was four, and later A Link to the Past. She's always been my gaming buddy.

Used to be completely in love with Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny as my fav wii game of all time, and have been so excited for the RF5 release! It's easy to forget that years ago the idea of a Rune Factory 5 was a pipe dream since the devs went out of business. Thank the stars they reformed and continued making this series.
Very thorough! I totally agree about the open world aspects - if it's open and empty, it's not worth it just because it's the tend in games right now. Quality over quantity!
I find myself missing RF4 a lot while playing 5. The shift to full 3D has added so many loading screens between areas and I keep getting blindsided by enemies without the top-down view. I probably need to just get used to the gameplay lol, but I'm past Atohl's End at this point and still miss RF4 for one reason or another.
I hear you. I am looking into the performance issues, doing some testing today (many people on Twitter asked me to comment) and will summarise my findings. There are some tweaks you can make - look for a post here from "ash", which is very helpful. RF4 was a stellar entry in the series, and it would be hard to top that. They're clearly still struggling with the whole 3D thing and how to adjust performance .. I really would like to see a comprehensive patch.
I like your point about the issues with open world games. I haven’t been able to articulate why I can grow tired and impatient when I play in an open world game. I think your point has brought to light the reason. It is tiring and unnecessary if it is not well designed and does sometimes feel like filler. I have not played enough of Rune Factory 5 to comment if it is the case there. So far the environments are smaller in scope. Nice video. It’s always enjoyable to see you light up about a loved series. That very glow is what inspired me to discover the Atelier series.
Have you checked out any of the NIS Classics games? They’re pretty awesome compilations of classic NIS roleplaying games - and they just announced volume 3 today! Definitely an amazing treat for any fans of NIS and roleplaying games!

I just got my copy today and started playing, despite the small performance issues I'm absolutely loving it. Positively couldn't put my switch down for good 4 hours, I think that tells something :D Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the game after you've gotten into it too :)
Happy to hear you're experiencing few performance issues. Could you let me know which Switch model you're playing on? The original Version 1, or V2 (2019) or OLED?
I didn’t finish the video but if you’re referring to M rating for other countries it’s probably because of gay marriage. I’m so excited for that feature though!
I am obviously referring to the M rating for my own country, since that is the version I have and NO OTHER country has rated this game M. All of which I explain in the video. The issue of same-sex marriage is *not* an issue in my country (our legislation was one of the earliest to recognise it) so the answer is No - that is not the explanation for the rating.

@@Kuso_Ouji Of course I cannot know with certainty what possessed those codgers at the ratings office ... it's hard to get access to details. But we have experience here with their NZ-specific decisions and 9/10 it's to do with what they perceive as "under-age" looking characters.

Despite its flaws I'm really loving RF5, after all these years I never thought that we'd get another one. RF4 was one of the first games that I ever played, my little brother and I shared a 3DS at the time and he had Harvest Moon: A New Beginning from the eshop. I decided to take the other save file on that one, and he recommended RF4 to me since I liked HM:ANB. I've been in love with RF4 for the past decade, and RF4 Special has only made me love it more. And while RF5 isn't as good as RF4 in my opinion, I do appreciate the characters and some of the improvements made. I was also surprised and excited to learn that same-sex marriage was possible, since it can be so hard to find games like this which allow me to marry women as a woman, though thankfully it's becoming more common. Unfortunately I had to send one of my joycons back to Nintendo for repair since I was having drift problems, but I'm sure I'll pick it right back up again when the joycon is returned to me. I'm so glad to have found your channel, it can feel so rare to see older gamers.

I am so excited to hear your review. Please be forewarned, Chrono Cross is still, at it’s heart, a PlayStation One game. It is classic, but will not compare to the graphics of current generation games. Please keep this in mind when playing as it is not a full fledged remake. On that note, I did download it, yet I also have my physical copy preordered and am receiving it in the first week of May. By the way, I adore your reviews and your videos.
Oh my goodness! I came across your videos months ago and you're the reason that I finally took the dive and got into the Atelier series. It's nice to find you again. I've been a huge fan of the Rune Factory series and was very excited for the new game. It is fun, don't get me wrong. I was up way too late last night playing it. There are a lot of little issues that add up though. The overworld is very empty. I'd spend a minute running from one destination to another with nothing between point A and point B. Fighting a boss was a struggle because there was a second or two of lag when pressing the combat button. It is so disappointing how buggy it is, at times it feels like I'm playing an indie game that a developer put out for testing. I played Rune Factory Frontier back in 2009, which was on the Wii, and it ran much better than this game. The world was contained and so pleasant on the eyes. It was very green and earthy and beautifully made. Complaints aside, RF5 is fun. The characters are charming, the game play is enjoyable. It is a Rune Factory game after all. I'm really hoping they make more games in the future and don't go bankrupt again. Side note, I didn't know friends across the pond have different interior art! It looks like the earth dragon? My copy has the lovely image from 25:07.

But if you're having problems finding my channel (or forget about it ... eeeek! 😬) may I respectfully suggest that using "Subscribe" will fix that problem? Unlike other social media, it does Not mean you'll be inundated with anything. In fact nothing! And if you press the little notification bell, all that happens is that you'll get a popup notification when I post a new video. Which happens about once every 2-6 weeks. I just mention it because I get a fair number of people leaving a comment like "I lost your channel and am so glad I found it again .. after 2 years!" And that's something that's easily preventable. 😃
So far I've found the world to be about as open as previous games. You're still going from "room" to "room" they've just hid that fact a little bit. I do miss the illustrated environments but aside from one particularly noteworthy path in the game I haven't found any terribly barren areas just yet.
After watching a couple of early reviews, I was a bit skeptical. I got the game anyway as it looked like a game I would really enjoy and I'm so happy I did! I've now played 10h of the game and I love it so much! I turned Dynamic Resolution off and disabled the Farm Camera option and I'm simply having a good time :) Could the performance be better? Yes, but the game is still very charming nonetheless! I really hope the game will perform (financially) well enough to justify a RF6 in the future

@@Ric_93 Thank you, Ric! Yes, I play on exactly the same model, also handheld, and issues have been minor, mostly. I would say, with a somewhat beefed up Switch model, Devs would likely find it easier to optimise their games.
Just a theory I have, I wonder if the M rating is possibly because of one of the female Bachelorette's. Without spoilers, especially since I havent unlocked her yet so I can only assume based on what I've learnt, I know she has very "mature" themes to her way of speaking and character. I've seen it happen in the past how one single character can skyrocket the rating of a game so that's what I'm thinking might be the case here.
It's perfectly possible - as you say, sometimes one tiny issue can cause the rating to shift. I checked the database of the NZ OFLC (our ratings authority) and RF5 has no entry .. it may just be slow being added, I don't know. But it shows you how poorly the whole operation works here. I have extensive experience with OFLC decisions where Japanese games are concerned, and reasons for M rating often are things like "wearing short skirt = sexually suggestive" in combination with "character looks too young, inappropriate suggestiveness".
As always, it was a delight watching your video! I think I was the one who asked you if there's a difference between the cardboard/packaging of RF 4 and RF 5 LEs..? It's interesting that Marvelous/XSEED didn't change the packaging for the Europe edition. I just received my Earthmate Edition today, and straight away, I noticed that the cardboard was thicker. The box itself is slimmer and a tad wider than RF 4's Archival Edition. It also opens through the bottom, not on the side as per your video. :O

I've never played any Rune Factory games but have been wanting to try one. I'm currently addicted to the cozy farming genre. Do you have any videos where you review Rune Factory 5 or do a comparison between 4 and 5? If not, I'd love to see a video on that
I'm afraid I haven't. The only one where I did a bit of that was for Rune Factory 3 - old and remaster. But I wouldn't recommend that as a first RF game. I was thinking about getting into the Rune Factory series after being a fan of the Harvest Moon series long ago. I'm happy to know that it keeps the farming and socializing elements that I really liked about the series that I couldn't get with similar games like Animal Crossing!
I think that 2008 picking up Rune Factory 2 was my first JRPG and farming sim! I really loved it, played Rune Factory 3 as well because of it. What struck me about it, even now- is that it still keeps the heart and soul of the franchise alive. I mean, the fact that I remember the style of the art from so long ago that I recognize it instantly says a lot to me. It's a very charming little series and it does such a great job of setting out to do exactly what it means to. I tend to play games that are more intense nowadays- stuff like Elden Ring, Othercide, and other grimmer titles. Something about Rune Factory has me looking at getting 5 even after all of these years. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the game, I just subscribed! Also I love your plushies they're so cute!

The good news is that games are great places to take your time with and explore. And just between you and me I actually missed a bunch of features in Othercide because I just had trouble with the menus of all things haha. Got it eventually tho. Thank goodness for people uploading walkthroughs of games!

Hashimoto has an incredible track record with these games, from the earliest Harvest Moon, to Story of Seasons and Rune Factory. I just yesterday did another feature on Twitter (my Appreciation Days) on an older Harvest Moon game of his.
@@Food4Dogs that's wonderful!!! I will have to watch it! I still play my 2012 Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns when I feel sad or lonely! The games always remind me how beautiful ordinary life is, and they are so comforting! I learned how to cook more, and garden in real life after playing them. Even if it's silly, they are such a comfort to me.
I like art differences, since it sorta makes each game more distinct. Unless the said game takes place in the same world. Then i feel weird. Like with Ys. Seeing so many Adols and Dogis always makes me think dark thoughts

I’ve heard Rune Factory (especially RF5) described as a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ - But I’m fine with that. I can forgive the game its frame issues or other bugs, and I find myself loving running around doing whatever I feel like - fighting monsters, farming, preparing gifts for villagers, etc. It really is a joyful formula with so much potential!
Overall im actually loving this game and recommend it to others, just keep in mind they had a small budget and are trying something new. RuneFactory has always been a beautiful game, and my biggest critique of this game is it isn't beautiful. I also wish relationships felt a bit deeper. I'm not to upset because I know they had a small budget and were trying something "new."
I loved RF4, but never tried the older titles. I've already got 70 hours in this one and love it. Still gotta marry Ludmila, but got the 20 floors cleared in Rigbarth Maze. I know it has it's framerate issues etc, but deff a great game and recommend it. Great discussion and unboxing!
Rune Factory Tides Of Destiny is my favorite Rune Factory game. I never did beat it lol but I do have great memories of it and it's a nice 3d Rune Factory game. Wish we could get like a Rune Factory collection bundle of the older games than remaster of the 4th granted 3 was the last number series I played and did not care to much for it since 3&4 looked very focus on combat. In 3 I hardly ever used my farm land for anything. Tides Of Destiny was a game I was very focus in both farming and combat both were very fun to get into. Probably because the farming was like streamed line you don't have seeds I remember I think it was kind of random but you have a wand that will plant seeds on highlighted spots and depending what season island your on you will grow that season crops. It have been a long time since I played it but I did enjoyed how simple the farming was. I even had my monsters do work with watering&harvesting since I never used them like that before. So ya I'll prise Tides Of Destiny but I am enjoying Rune Factory 5 it been fun playing it and watching videos on it. It is like akward how it's an open world game since if you go to far the monsters will one shot you&you will do zero damage to them plus I have not seen if I unlock like warp points. If you can unlock warp points so later in the game you can just teleport to places you been would be nice.
Make sure you discover and activate those warp points! There are plenty around. As to a Rune Factory Collection bundle of older games - that's a great idea and I wish they'd do it. 👍🏻
This is my first time playing a Rune Factory game and I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m really loving the characters and farming. I spent most of my childhood playing Harvest Moon and this series really makes me nostalgic of those games. It’s true that the graphics aren’t amazing and that the performance does have issues at some points though. If you want a better playing experience, I recommend going into your settings and turning off Dynamic Resolution. Also in settings, I would turn off the Farm Camera, turn off auto camera adjust, and change the camera speeds to 80 in both the X and Y options. All of these tips helped my playing experience run a bit smoother!
Thank you! It has always been a MASSIVE pet peeve of mine when the art style of a series shifts wildly from game to game. I always thought I was just a bit odd for feeling so strongly about that.

The first was always my favorite character portrait-wise, and Frontier to a lesser extent. I liked the soft, earthy colors and I think it tried the hardest to emulate the official artwork, which I’ve always really loved.
Minako Iwasaki is the name of the artist. She has been the main artist throughout the entire Rune Factory series, all the way from Rune Factory 1 on the DS.
I agree with your opinion about the overworld.
I actually too prefer the overworld of the older titels. It was so charming. It had a picture book quality too it. I wish delevopers could understand that not everything has to be open world, especially if its empty and the graphic is not the best. It cheapens the look of the game so quickly /: Nevertheless im still excited for the new game and i want to support it. Dont want them to go bankrupt again lol

I second this, but I think what I'm saddest about is the fact that the villager doesn't physically meet up when there's an event anymore, it's just a marker on the map and cut into the cutscene, I feel like the charm of the older game is the fact that you see a character running to gather somewhere mean that there's a town event going on.

I'm a 28-year-old guy and even I want to see more games with great old people characters, especially as protagonists, I find old protagonists so interesting. I can think of at least 1 or 2 games where you play as an old man, but never old ladies! What's the deal with that, I wonder?

I'm just in love with Rune Factory, grew up playing it and took me so long that I became an adult when I realized why we always start off with no memories of who we are, because the game is about making new memories, forming friendships and love. such a simple yet beautiful feel-good series.
while i enjoyed Frontier and Oceans (japanese version) for being different, I much prefer the old school rpg style top-down view of the numbered titles. it just has a unique charm to it.
I'm the same - I prefer the old-school style. I know why they made the leap into open world 3D ... and I hope it pays off for them in terms of attracting new players. But it also makes it feel a bit like every other JRPG that's built on Unity out there (know what I mean?).

I absolutely agree with your point about the loss of "worldmaps" or over world maps in modern games, it may have been done originally as a technology limitation, but there's nothing wrong with using it deliberately, especially if you don't intend to actually put anything interesting on the long slogs from one point of interest to another in a "proper" open world game.
I've been a big JRPG player for years, but some reason I'd never tried out the RF series until I picked up RF5 a few months ago. I've heard from lots of people it's not the best in the series but I've really enjoyed it so far. There's something so comforting about running around a small town farming and hanging out with the townsfolk that you see every day. I might have to pick up RF4 at some point!

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny was my first ever life sim and is still one of my favorite games of all time. When I saw Rune Factory 5 was returning to 3D, I knew I had to get it to try and recapture that magic of falling in love with a fictional cast like never before. I believe I can hear the Wind Shrine theme when you started opening the box!
Yay another fan of Tides Of Destiny. Ya I bought 5 for the same reason since Tides Of Destiny was the last Rune Factory game I played hmm maybe 3 but it was to combat focus for me. Tides Of Destiny had the balance for me to enjoy farming and combat. Really enjoyed catching all the monsters and trying to woo the samurai lady who insist they are a dude.just running to her with sushi in hope she will love me lol.plus the whole story part of your best friend stuck in the body than have amnesia. Plus it's nice you can woo your friend a little so you could merry her hm I think you can also play as her.

I just found your channel, it's so nice to find an older adult who also likes games. I love Rune Factory & have played about all the titles with my kids while they were growing up. When my youngest adult son found out RF5 was coming out he bought me a copy. I've been loving the newest game in the series & I hope to see more of them in the future. I like Runes much better than the Harvest Moon & Story of Seasons series.

I have honestly never heard of this franchise before but it might be something worth looking into. It sounds somewhat similar to stardew valley which i played a few months ago. Yes, Rune Factory is in the tradition of farming sim games (like Stardew V.) - it grew out of the Harvest Moon franchise. My original Rune Factory video explains a bit more.

The age rating difference is really curious to me. I had no idea until you pointed it out. So hugely thankful that we were able to have a new entry in the series though. Ever since RF1 I've been totally hooked and RF4 will always have a special place in my heart!

Harvest Moon was my first game on my Gameboy Pocket and naturally I picked up Rune Factory (I think for the NDS..). This video makes me want to get one of the Rune Factory games for switch! The art is just marvellous.

Hearing your experience of the Rune Factory series was very wholesome - I found it to be really informative, containing just the right balance of information to get an understanding of what the franchise is all about without spoiling it for newcomers or people such as myself who haven't played a game like this in the long while.
I've dabbled here and there in the Rune Factory series so I'm no aficionado just mostly tried it out of curiosity and found them to be enjoyable games overall.
Your video has inspired me to go out and try Rune Factory 5 especially with the transition towards full 3d Graphics this time so I'm excited to see how this will affect the overall feel and look of the game. To draw a reasonable comparison I'm gonna get Rune Factory 4 also.

A new Britta video, what a wonderful surprise for my Saturday night 😊 you somehow manage to make unboxings so engaging with your insights into the series history and your careful way of displaying each item. Unfortunately I missed out on the preorder window for this edition here in Australia, saw that the North American/Earthmate edition became available on Amazon on launch day and jumped on it. I'm very excited to receive mine in a few weeks, with that excitement only slightly dampened when I remembered that being the NA edition, it would be missing the standard game box and cover. Why they continue to have this difference with many limited editions I'll never know, I'm just hoping I'll be able to source the cover art in a few months and print it myself.
Oh, good thinking to jump on the US edition! Thank goodness the Switch is not region locked.
Yea, it doesn't come with the standard game case .. but otherwise identical. Apart from the cartridge! It has a tiny green band printed on it that says "Earthmate Edition". Ours has "Limited Edition" printed on that green band (I needed to zoom in to see it).
Also, the NA cart looks more appealing, with the image of a Woolie on it!

I had never thought about the menu-ing in Switch games as opposed to DS/3DS until you mentioned it, but now I'm thinking on it.
I think a big advantage the dual screens had was that you could put some of the heavier menu-ing on the bottom screen, while keeping the top screen free and clear for actual gameplay, or vice versa.

Rune Factory 3 was my absolute favorite title as a child, I played an absurd amount of that game. Characters were charming, the gameplay loop was compelling and the farming sim/upgrade system was years and years ahead of its time.
I thought Rune Factory 4 was also fantastic on the 3DS; I have very fond memories of being quite sick when it came out and it kept me good company while I was bedridden. To this day I have hundreds of hours on the original 3DS release, and have completed a playthrough on the switch DX version as well.
Very excited to see what the newest release has to offer and indulge in a little bit of nostalgia

I LOVE 4 and only played 4 and 5 so I was interested in 3 when I heard about the switch release approaching but I wanna play as a girl. I've played games as a male protagonist (like Batman in Arkham Asylum and a few of the Far Cry games) but because Rune Factory is very much about relationships you build with the villagers I just want to play a girl.

It's unlikely I will cover Triangle Strategy soon. Such is the mountain of games published over the last 18 months, it's really hard to get on top of that.

I highly recommend fantasy life for 3ds and the DS rune factory games which are playable on 3ds.

I agree with the art style and humor 😅I'd really love to see them go back to more of the softer tones like maybe Rune Factory Frontier. Ideally I'd like to see them take the best elements of the different games and combine them into one. I miss the humor RF 4 had too, watching the characters talk back and forth with each other was hilarious, and I wish that had carried over to RF 5. I love all the scenes between characters they have in 5, it's great, but just casual, funny banter when the characters are hanging around each other, would have been nice. Over all I think RF did make some good progress that I want to see continue, like with the overworld, romance events are more fun, especially being broken up into multiple parts, I do really appreciate same-sex marriage being added, the amount of monsters is really cool, I find cooking a little more engaging in this one, and the fighting feels a little more fluid... when the frame rate isn't being a mess.
Also this is my first time watching one of your videos, and it was a lot of fun 😄 You remind me of my grandma a bit (which I hope you don't mind me saying) I was raised on video games thanks to her, she started me off with Itchy and Scratchy on the Super Nintendo when I was four, and later A Link to the Past. In North America, RF5 was rated T for teen. M seems high but 12 and up seems low.

I find myself missing RF4 a lot while playing 5. The shift to full 3D has added so many loading screens between areas and I keep getting blindsided by enemies without the top-down view. I probably need to just get used to the gameplay lol, but I'm past Atohl's End at this point and still miss RF4 for one reason or another.
I hear you. I am looking into the performance issues, doing some testing today (many people on Twitter asked me to comment) and will summarise my findings. There are some tweaks you can make - look for a post here from "ash", which is very helpful.
RF4 was a stellar entry in the series, and it would be hard to top that.
They're clearly still struggling with the whole 3D thing and how to adjust performance .. I really would like to see a comprehensive patch.
I like your point about the issues with open world games. I haven’t been able to articulate why I can grow tired and impatient when I play in an open world game. I think your point has brought to light the reason. It is tiring and unnecessary if it is not well designed and does sometimes feel like filler. I have not played enough of Rune Factory 5 to comment if it is the case there. So far the environments are smaller in scope.

I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the root cause of the M rating is the character Ludmilia.
I didn’t finish the video but if you’re referring to M rating for other countries it’s probably because of gay marriage.

I am obviously referring to the M rating for my own country, since that is the version I have and NO OTHER country has rated this game M. All of which I explain in the video.
The issue of same-sex marriage is *not* an issue in my country (our legislation was one of the earliest to recognise it) so the answer is No - that is not the explanation for the rating.

@@Food4Dogs had no clue til now either, it’s painting on metal surfaces , magnetic powder you spray with a gun that sticks to the metal if i understand correctly , apparently you can’t just spray paint on metal it hardly sticks and doesn’t look professional
Looks easy enough and in high demand, always wanted to do airbrush growing up but never really was much of an artist so that should get me going

Despite its flaws I'm really loving RF5, after all these years I never thought that we'd get another one. RF4 was one of the first games that I ever played, my little brother and I shared a 3DS at the time and he had Harvest Moon: A New Beginning from the eshop. I decided to take the other save file on that one, and he recommended RF4 to me since I liked HM:ANB.
I've been in love with RF4 for the past decade, and RF4 Special has only made me love it more. And while RF5 isn't as good as RF4 in my opinion, I do appreciate the characters and some of the improvements made. I was also surprised and excited to learn that same-sex marriage was possible, since it can be so hard to find games like this which allow me to marry women as a woman, though thankfully it's becoming more common.
Unfortunately I had to send one of my joycons back to Nintendo for repair since I was having drift problems, but I'm sure I'll pick it right back up again when the joycon is returned to me. I'm so glad to have found your channel, it can feel so rare to see older gamers.
Nice choice using Idra Cave backing track. One of my all time faves in Rune Factory.

I am so excited to hear your review. Please be forewarned, Chrono Cross is still, at it’s heart, a PlayStation One game. It is classic, but will not compare to the graphics of current generation games. Please keep this in mind when playing as it is not a full fledged remake.
On that note, I did download it, yet I also have my physical copy preordered and am receiving it in the first week of May.

Oh my goodness! I came across your videos months ago and you're the reason that I finally took the dive and got into the Atelier series. It's nice to find you again.
I've been a huge fan of the Rune Factory series and was very excited for the new game. It is fun, don't get me wrong. I was up way too late last night playing it. There are a lot of little issues that add up though. The overworld is very empty. I'd spend a minute running from one destination to another with nothing between point A and point B. Fighting a boss was a struggle because there was a second or two of lag when pressing the combat button. It is so disappointing how buggy it is, at times it feels like I'm playing an indie game that a developer put out for testing.
I played Rune Factory Frontier back in 2009, which was on the Wii, and it ran much better than this game. The world was contained and so pleasant on the eyes. It was very green and earthy and beautifully made. Complaints aside, RF5 is fun. The characters are charming, the game play is enjoyable. It is a Rune Factory game after all. I'm really hoping they make more games in the future and don't go bankrupt again.
Side note, I didn't know friends across the pond have different interior art! It looks like the earth dragon? My copy has the lovely image from 25:07.

Unlike other social media, it does Not mean you'll be inundated with anything. In fact nothing! And if you press the little notification bell, all that happens is that you'll get a popup notification when I post a new video. Which happens about once every 2-6 weeks.
I just mention it because I get a fair number of people leaving a comment like "I lost your channel and am so glad I found it again .. after 2 years!" And that's something that's easily preventable. 😃
So far I've found the world to be about as open as previous games. You're still going from "room" to "room" they've just hid that fact a little bit. I do miss the illustrated environments but aside from one particularly noteworthy path in the game I haven't found any terribly barren areas just yet.
After watching a couple of early reviews, I was a bit skeptical. I got the game anyway as it looked like a game I would really enjoy and I'm so happy I did!
I've now played 10h of the game and I love it so much! I turned Dynamic Resolution off and disabled the Farm Camera option and I'm simply having a good time :) Could the performance be better? Yes, but the game is still very charming nonetheless!
I really hope the game will perform (financially) well enough to justify a RF6 in the future

Yes, I play on exactly the same model, also handheld, and issues have been minor, mostly.
I would say, with a somewhat beefed up Switch model, Devs would likely find it easier to optimise their games.
Just a theory I have, I wonder if the M rating is possibly because of one of the female Bachelorette's. Without spoilers, especially since I havent unlocked her yet so I can only assume based on what I've learnt, I know she has very "mature" themes to her way of speaking and character.
I've seen it happen in the past how one single character can skyrocket the rating of a game so that's what I'm thinking might be the case here.
It's perfectly possible - as you say, sometimes one tiny issue can cause the rating to shift.
I checked the database of the NZ OFLC (our ratings authority) and RF5 has no entry .. it may just be slow being added, I don't know. But it shows you how poorly the whole operation works here.
I have extensive experience with OFLC decisions where Japanese games are concerned, and reasons for M rating often are things like "wearing short skirt = sexually suggestive" in combination with "character looks too young, inappropriate suggestiveness".
I love this channel, this month wait has been terrible.

As always, it was a delight watching your video! I think I was the one who asked you if there's a difference between the cardboard/packaging of RF 4 and RF 5 LEs..? It's interesting that Marvelous/XSEED didn't change the packaging for the Europe edition.
I just received my Earthmate Edition today, and straight away, I noticed that the cardboard was thicker. The box itself is slimmer and a tad wider than RF 4's Archival Edition. It also opens through the bottom, not on the side as per your video. :O

I just started playing runes factory 5 it’s definitely something I’m loveing so far I’m still at the very beginning and I like to take my time so i will probably be playing for a while

I've never played any Rune Factory games but have been wanting to try one. I'm currently addicted to the cozy farming genre. Do you have any videos where you review Rune Factory 5 or do a comparison between 4 and 5? If not, I'd love to see a video on that
I'm afraid I haven't. The only one where I did a bit of that was for Rune Factory 3 - old and remaster. But I wouldn't recommend that as a first RF game.

I was thinking about getting into the Rune Factory series after being a fan of the Harvest Moon series long ago. I'm happy to know that it keeps the farming and socializing elements that I really liked about the series that I couldn't get with similar games like Animal Crossing!

I think that 2008 picking up Rune Factory 2 was my first JRPG and farming sim! I really loved it, played Rune Factory 3 as well because of it. What struck me about it, even now- is that it still keeps the heart and soul of the franchise alive. I mean, the fact that I remember the style of the art from so long ago that I recognize it instantly says a lot to me. It's a very charming little series and it does such a great job of setting out to do exactly what it means to.
I tend to play games that are more intense nowadays- stuff like Elden Ring, Othercide, and other grimmer titles. Something about Rune Factory has me looking at getting 5 even after all of these years. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the game, I just subscribed!

Hashimoto has an incredible track record with these games, from the earliest Harvest Moon, to Story of Seasons and Rune Factory.

@@Food4Dogs that's wonderful!!! I will have to watch it! I still play my 2012 Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns when I feel sad or lonely! The games always remind me how beautiful ordinary life is, and they are so comforting! I learned how to cook more, and garden in real life after playing them. Even if it's silly, they are such a comfort to me.

I like art differences, since it sorta makes each game more distinct. Unless the said game takes place in the same world. Then i feel weird. Like with Ys. Seeing so many Adols and Dogis always makes me think dark thoughts

I’ve heard Rune Factory (especially RF5) described as a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ - But I’m fine with that. I can forgive the game its frame issues or other bugs, and I find myself loving running around doing whatever I feel like - fighting monsters, farming, preparing gifts for villagers, etc. It really is a joyful formula with so much potential!

Overall im actually loving this game and recommend it to others, just keep in mind they had a small budget and are trying something new. RuneFactory has always been a beautiful game, and my biggest critique of this game is it isn't beautiful. I also wish relationships felt a bit deeper. I'm not to upset because I know they had a small budget and were trying something "new."
I think that's a very fair and balanced viewpoint, I quite agree.
I loved RF4, but never tried the older titles. I've already got 70 hours in this one and love it. Still gotta marry Ludmila, but got the 20 floors cleared in Rigbarth Maze. I know it has it's framerate issues etc, but deff a great game and recommend it. Great discussion and unboxing!

Rune Factory Tides Of Destiny is my favorite Rune Factory game. I never did beat it lol but I do have great memories of it and it's a nice 3d Rune Factory game. Wish we could get like a Rune Factory collection bundle of the older games than remaster of the 4th granted 3 was the last number series I played and did not care to much for it since 3&4 looked very focus on combat. In 3 I hardly ever used my farm land for anything. Tides Of Destiny was a game I was very focus in both farming and combat both were very fun to get into. Probably because the farming was like streamed line you don't have seeds I remember I think it was kind of random but you have a wand that will plant seeds on highlighted spots and depending what season island your on you will grow that season crops. It have been a long time since I played it but I did enjoyed how simple the farming was. I even had my monsters do work with watering&harvesting since I never used them like that before. So ya I'll prise Tides Of Destiny but I am enjoying Rune Factory 5 it been fun playing it and watching videos on it. It is like akward how it's an open world game since if you go to far the monsters will one shot you&you will do zero damage to them plus I have not seen if I unlock like warp points. If you can unlock warp points so later in the game you can just teleport to places you been would be nice.
Make sure you discover and activate those warp points! There are plenty around.
As to a Rune Factory Collection bundle of older games - that's a great idea and I wish they'd do it. 👍🏻

This is my first time playing a Rune Factory game and I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m really loving the characters and farming. I spent most of my childhood playing Harvest Moon and this series really makes me nostalgic of those games.
It’s true that the graphics aren’t amazing and that the performance does have issues at some points though. If you want a better playing experience, I recommend going into your settings and turning off Dynamic Resolution. Also in settings, I would turn off the Farm Camera, turn off auto camera adjust, and change the camera speeds to 80 in both the X and Y options. All of these tips helped my playing experience run a bit smoother!
Thanks, ash, I'll try those tips. I have found (in my short first playtime) the camera a bit finicky, so that makes sense to me.
