Thank you so much! Since our trip in September 2019, I've shared with numerous people who are either from Ireland or knowledgeable about the mythology of Ireland about Sheela - not one had ever heard about St Patrick's wife. I'm grateful to be able to catch up on these! Blessings and gratitude - Heather (Carol says hi as well!)

As a pagan practitioner of magic who works closely with the Sheela na gig this was wonderful to see! I really value your channel for many things, so glad you've weighed in on this topic ☺️ I'm not sure if you've read it, but, "Sheela na gig: The Dark Goddess Of Sacred Power," by Starr Goode is a great resource on the Sheela na gig, many scholarly and historical accounts are referenced.

    Hi Anthony,
Just saw an article on Heritage Daily about lightning strikes might have something to do with the placement of stone circles during the Neolithic era. Apparently, standing stones and henges are still being struck by lightning more frequently than random strikes. Possible geomagnetic correlation between the sites and lightning.

Outstanding work! I've got a book about the holy grail and the knights templar. There's a chapter that covered some interesting things. Some say, the grail was the blood of Jesus Christ as he too had a wife and children. Some escaped and landed a Ireland and others in France. Very interesting stuff.

Hello! In Serbia, the Lepenski Vir culture has exactly the same stone images as the Sheela na gigs. But those in Serbia probably predate the Sheela na gigs with thousands of years.

I am reminded of a historical novel by Morgan Llywelyn , the Red Branch, where Macha ran a race while pregnant with twins and in pain turned into the Sheila na gig, gave birth to the twins, and swore that for 9x9 generations men would suffer the pangs of childbirth during times of stress. Was that for literary dramatic use or is there any scholarly references to that event?

I was rewatching this because I needed some book resources, but I just realizing that Catholicism tends to do this to the ancient myths and ancient figures. In Mexico happenes something very similar with our own deities and pupular folkloric figures, one of the most known is the Virgen of Guadalupe, since this religious figure came to replace a female deity the aztecs had known as Cuatlicue, who, funny enough, was linked to the fertility of the land and her representation was always described as disturbing and even vulgar

Regarding the negative attitudes towards Christianity in regards to its relationship with Irish mythology, I have absolutely participated in that previously, and I’m coming to realize this is almost definitely coming from a place of trauma induced by my interactions with christo-fascists in the US as a lesbian trans woman. I think if this frustration also comes from, as some profess, an idea that the church destroyed Irish polytheism, it serves nobody to recreate that issue in the modern day going in reverse. Pluralism is absolutely something to strive for if we want peace and understanding between peoples of different backgrounds, and isn’t that exactly what we ask of Christians? If so, should we not practice that as well?

A theory I heard follows the idea that Saint Patrick isn't one singular man. There is the historical Saint Patrick which we know from his writings and primary accounts from his life, and the mythological Saint Patrick that we see in the end of Tír Na nÓg or the snake myth which we now know was a mixture of propaganda from Gerald of Wales and a Norman explanation of why we have no snakes. Now this theory follows the more mythology idea of Saint Patrick. This idea is that Saint Patrick in this sense represents the coming of the church and the coming of Christianity to Ireland, and Sheelah represents Ireland or the people of Ireland (Ireland and us are commonly viewed as a woman throughout history, mythology, culture, and politics) and that their "marriage" represents the union and establishment of Christianity and the church in Ireland. And that the fertility aspects of Sheela represent some ancient or medieval "Mother Ireland" or "mother church".

I remember few people telling me that St.Patrick had a wife when I was young but I thought they made it up cause I could never find any mention of her in Patrick's stories or Online. Now I learn that they were telling the truth Go Figure.
