m6 would have solidified the Dorian sound, but this enables more minor scales to be used over these

Yep! Or you can do C Ionian, F lydian, G mixolydian, A aeolian. It's all the notes in the C scale :)
I guess aeolian could be as well, there is no precise indication in the harmony if the Dm is dorian or aeolian
