The pff guy who said herbert can't play never said he was wrong but still has a hate boner for herbert. It's good to see people admit they were wrong about herbert. What they did to herbert in oregon was down right criminal. They hid his immense talent with awful play calling and schemes and If herbert played at Alabama he would have broken records and possibly won a heisman.

Its F because the process is terrible, getting Hurts in the 2nd for a noncompetitive team when he is essentially a middle of the road qb with a similar ceiling is a move to go .500, not to build for the future. On top of that you have Wentz rostered and are making essentially a lateral move in terms of competing for a championship. That being said I think it should be a D rather than F given the Wentz trade that makes it less of an awful pick

  • @JeKramxel
    @JeKramxel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Everyone and their mothers were wrong on Herbert, me included. I hated it when we drafted him! But more importantly than being wrong is trying to understand why we were all so wrong.
I really undervalued his ability to spread the ball. It was an obvious thing from his tape, and not something that should be overlooked, like it was. Especially because it means he IS going through his progressions, and finding someone to get the ball to.
I really overestimated how quickly NFL coaching can get a player free of terrible habits. In Justin's case was that ridiculous ball flip he always did after receiving the snap. By the end of training camp it was already coached out of him.
Another thing that should be noted was him being a checkdown machine, and not going deep that often. This was all about Oregon's scheme, and even though he does tend to check down at times, he does read the whole field (like I mentioned earlier). Another mental note right there.

His generational physical talent should have also come into play when evaluating him. 6'6" 240 with a cannon and mobility. His Rose bowl performance where he beat the Badgers with his legs should have eliminated a lot of doubts about him. They said he didn't have the fire but that game proved that he did.

Andrew Thomas: A. Correct! True Left Tackle. Lots of TV pundits got him wrong. Grade is A+.
Xavier McKinney: A. Correct! Total playmaker. Could easily upgrade to A+.
Matt Peart: A+. Incorrect. Grade is D. Lacked stoutness. Clinging to a roster spot. Likely cut in 2023. Replaced by Evan Neal.
Darnay Holmes: A. Incorrect. Grade is a B or C+. Tough slot corner but who is very grabby and gets called for PI.
Shane Lamieux: B+. Grade is F but injuries were hard to predict. Ironman in college but couldn't stay healthy in NFL. Likely cut in 2023.
Cam Brown: A. Ok. Grade is B. Solid special teams but has done little aside from Special Teams. It's a 6th round pick.
Carter Coughlin: A+. Grade is a B. Solid pick for the 7th. Mainly just Specials. Converted from Edge to depth off-ball LB.
TJ Brunson: C. Correct. Practice Squad player and then cut.
Chris Williamson: C. Correct. Never made the team.
Tae Crowder: C. Incorrect! This was a A+ pick for Mr. Irrelevant. He was a ILB starter who flashed athleticism and playmaking (former RB).

2)kj hammer? BUST (p squad somewhere else)
    3)ojemudia? BUST (out the league?)
    4)Mctelvin? Gone (out the league)
5)Albert O? Traded for a late rnd pick and fighting for a P squad spot on the eagles
6)Strand? Bust ...doesn't belong in the nfl
7)muti? Bust (out the league maybe?)
    8) Cleveland? Bust out the league

As a Vikes fan I think you can give yourself a W. I think you were right overall, and there are still a few tbds for that draft because of Zimmer's 2021 feud/vendetta with Spielman that saw many inferior vets played ahead of Rick's recent picks.
I think Dantzler will be an unquestioned starter, and we might see more of players like Hand, Dye, Lynch, Willekes in 2023.

As of right now for the Giants (Rounds 1-4) ...
Andrew Thomas = A+ (Best tackle in football, or at least top 2 or 3.)
Xavier McKinney = B+ (Good safety with some more room to grow.)
Matt Peart = C- (Not a terrible pick at the time, but he hasn't gotten many chances. Showed promise with run blocking, but pass protection was bad. Might be ok depth.)
Darnay Holmes B-/B (Solid corner that has a propensity for bad penalties.)
Also, as a unexpected surprise, Hodgins has been great for us, especially considering he was a 6th round pick.

I'm criticial of 1st/2nd round running backs more than almost anyone. I think it's almost always a bad move. I've just seen too many 3rd or 4th or 5th round RBs come in and set the world on fire. With that being said, how freaking insane would it have been if the Chiefs had simply taken Jonathan Taylor instead of CEH. What an absolute nightmare that would be for the rest of the NFL lol.

1st round HBs are almost always a waste due to opportunity cost...the fall off in production from 1st to 4th round hbs is very minor but 1st to 4th round of any other position is usually HUGE.

To be fair about the Herbert analysis/criticism, in my eyes alot of the things that you said and other people said about him during the draft process was absolutely true at that time. The key words are: at that time. One of the big differences between us armchair GMs and actual GMs is they get to meet the player and talk to the player many times throughout the process, as well as his friends, family, coaches etc. So just because a player struggles with the mental side of the game, doesn't mean a team can't meet him, realize he's very bright, and believe they can coach it into him. This what I think happened with Josh Allen. He had tremendous gifts but horrible habits - I didn't like him but Buffalo believed they could coach it out of him and they did. The same thing happened with Herbert, it just happened alot faster because he happens to be tremendously bright - something we all heard, but aren't able to believe in without getting the opportunities real GMs get to meet players. This is why I believe you see teams buying high on these boom or bust QBs. My hope is that somehow the same thing can happen with Fields and my Bears. Trubisky didn't have the baseline physical talent of a Herbert/Allen/Fields and thus he ended up not being a good comparison to Herbert/with a different career outcome. Fields and Malik Willis would be in this same category, where you are betting on the gifts raising the player's 'floor' and coaching the bad habits out through time.

Marcus, I think you are going to hard on the HBs, especially Swift. They are going to have to pay him, but you are not taking into account the offensive line. With a HB like swift running the OLine got to gel and learn the way to play together. They have become a very good line, and big part of that is how they grew and became crazy good run blockers.
