Today we decided to tackle the hard job of doing Oakley's nails. It's really not easy to do, and we have tried it so many different ways over the years, you would think we would have it figured out by now, but no. . it's still hard for us to do. Sometimes I have it done at the groomers, sometimes at the vet, but sometimes it's just easier for her for us to do it. . . even though it's harder on us.
Today we did pretty good. We did nip one of her back nails just a bit too close, but she did okay with it and didn't even jump. I think she enjoyed her peanut butter!
After doing her nails, Jamie and I made dinner, and then his computer crashed and we found out his brand new hard drive died. So we spent the rest of the evening fixing his computer. All is back to normal now!

I love the look on Oakley's face when you're trimming her nails. It says, I'm not sure I like what you're doing to me, but this peanut butter is amazing so I guess it's ok. She did so well!

So excited by the title of the vlog! Jessica you did very good trimming Oakley's nails. Jaime was very good and you can tell Oakley really likes playing with her daddy and you know she loves her mommy. I'd love to hear and see that you regularly trimming her nails has made her not so scared. I wish I could come and help you do Oakley's nails. Older dogs are harder to do, and one that hasn't had her nails done properly as a young dog. The best thing to do for her, since she is more wobbly, is to keep her legs as aligned with her body as possible, and when you do her back feet, basically put your body under her to support the leg. In a way it's as if you were cleaning horse feet, so look up some videos of that. I spent 2 1/2 years in a grooming salon and had my fair share of dogs who hated their feet done. Another thing to is that if you don't have quick stop, flour, ivory soap will work the same, and if you have snow outside, let them walk around, the cold will close up the vein. But you all did a wonderful job, and it is stressful as they get older and more unstable.
The first and only time I did my dogs nails she jumped just as I was cutting and cut too much off. I think that hurt me more than my dog as I cried for about 20 mins after. x

Thank you for showing your process. My dog used to be good at nail clipping when he was young, but recently he's started to be pretty bad because I've nicked the quick. Now he's trying to bite sadly. I need to do some more training.

I do my 13year old girls toe nails one foot at a time. 1 foot 1 day, 2nd foot second day etc..... Along with treats and cuddles😉😄 thanks for sharin your kids with me!!!!

One thing I will never forget is when my previous baby dog was a puppy, (this was 17 years ago) we clipped his ail abit to much by accident and there was blood everywhere. We were so scared afterwards to cut his nails that we decided to let a groomer do it. He was fine within 10 minutes but it scared me and my mom so much.
it is sooo nice to see that Oakley is getting bets. she seems to miss out because Memphis and Shelby get so much. I know you love her, but she seems to be last when pets are the order of the day.
My vet told me to look for the color change in the claw as you trim a bit at a time. As you get closer to the wick the color changes. I am lucky both my cat and dog have clear claws. Have a great weekend.

Random tip. If you don’t have the quick stop flour works too. I scared the crap out of myself once cuz my dog got her claw stuck in something and I couldn’t get it loose so I was forced to trim it. I quicker her and it bled so bad. I’m in a wheelchair so I couldn’t reach my step moms flour...all I could do is hold a paper towel wrapped around it

Same thing happens when you trim cats nails. They have a quick as well and bleed so much from a tiny nick. I don’t use the guard since I prefer to check visually for where the quick is. That way a cat with a longer quick from not having been trimmed won’t bleed on me.
My girl hates it when I have to clip her nails so I take her outside so that she can watch the cats while I do it, they hypnotise her.

I had a 100-lb white German Shepherd that was afraid of only two things: thunder and having her nails trimmed. It took 3 people to do it ;)

I think, generally, dog's front paws are sensitive especially if you're going to trim their nails. I suggest you do the back paws first then the front paws as the last. ☺

I really struggle grooming my younger husky. She hates being pet and runs away. We can sometimes groom her with the peanut butter in a cup trick but she has longer fur like Oakley and she really needs a good groom. I'm scared she will snap at a groomer even though when she flares her teeth she never ever does anything. Do you have any advice?
You guys should check out the Facebook page nail maintenance for dogs. There's tons of awesome information on how to get even the worst dogs to enjoy nail trims. And awesome advice on how to trim the nails etc..
