This was ground breaking at the time of it's release. DeNiro hit his stride as an actor in Taxi Driver and it would propel him into Bertolucci's 1900 and into other great American cinema achievements 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Raging Bull.'
They don't make them like this anymore, that's for sure.

The guy in the taxi that was gonna kill his wife is Martin Scorcese.

Love your mom bro. Such a sweet lady. Great review guys ❤ btw, the Mohawk thing was a homage to native Americans before battle. In Vietnam American soldiers wore that hair style before going to war. The creep in the cab who had the cheating wife was Scorsese himself. The film is about loneliness. That’s why it showed so many scenes of other people the city with the jazz in background. He was a lonely man who had no direction. This movie is a MASTERPIECE.

FyI the lady at the concession stand was Deniro's real life wife at the time and the crazy guy in the back of the cab with the beard was Martin Scorsese the films director making a cameo.

I'm sure someone already said that the taxi passenger in the back seat who was talking about shooting his wife in the face was Martin Scorsese, but Scorsese first appears before that scene, when we see Cybill Shepherd walking into the campaign office the first time. Scorsese is sitting against the wall, outside the office door.

I love king of comedy. Jerry Lewis deserved kudos for agreeing to his role…but we all knew it was Johnny Carson, lol.

A very impactful film, I watched it 10 times (for free) in the first week of release and bought the soundtrack (so hauntingly beautiful) by Bernard Herrmann (his last), who was well known for his work with Hitchcock. Paul Schrader who wrote the screenplay would go on to write and direct other films with Hardcore (1979) with George C. Scott touching on similar themes from a father’s perspective. He also wrote books, Transcendental Style in film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer and a later treatise on one of my favorite filmmakers, Ozu Yasujiro. De Niro and Scorsese would go on to knock it out of the park again with King of Comedy.

I relate to Travis a lot. I love how his friend (and really EVERYONE does this to lost young men of the modern world) just kind goes: _"Yeah, life sucks."_ Wow, great pep-talk. Why would ever bother trying yo relate to talk to any other human? If THAT'S life, might as well just do it alone and die alone. Humans are a waste of time.

04:11 & 11:53 - SAY HELLO TO MR. SCORCESE! FINE CAMEOS!
Travis is the ultimate misanthropic individual. Without purpose in life, he feels alienated by society and is truly a “walking contradiction”: he searches purity but he takes Betsy to a porn theatre - if she accepts or rejects, Travis wins either way - he wants an honest job but deliberately forces himself into an hostile environment, he wants to save Iris but when he tries to commit suicide in front of her, he shows he's indifferent… Also, he despises every idea of society. He qualifies people in a derogatory meaning such as “community”, “syndicate”, “union”...And that’s why he tries to kill Senator Palatine, because Palatine is the people, "we are the people'' and Travis hates people.

It's hard not to see Palantine and think of Palpatine, and for good reason. George Lucas was tight with other young directors who came to the fore during the 1970s, including Scorsese (who was friends with Francis Ford Coppola [who was Lucas' mentor]), so the name given to "The Emperor" was very likely a nod to the politician in Taxi Driver. As well, Lucas' then-wife Marcia worked as an editor on Taxi Driver, and got a BAFTA nomination for her contribution.

    @fuzzballzz36 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I felt like Palantine was pretty much an upright guy for a politician. I think he just became a symbol of rejection from Betsy. Travis was so unhinged by then that his thought processes were not too straightforward.

Outstanding reaction to this movie, one of the best so far. Yes, you're right: this is before security got tight. You know why? A guy got obsessed with this movie, and specifically Jodie Foster.....and he ended up shooting Ronald Reagan, his press secretary and a secret service agent. This came right after the Pope got shot, and John Lennon right before him. So security got majorly beefed up after that. And it's, in part, due to this movie. Weird, huh? The flip side of this story is De Niro and Scorsese's fantastic "The King Of Comedy". The movie "Joker" is basically a combination of "Taxi Driver" and "The King Of Comedy". Highly recommend that one! Fantastic movie! Very different from this!

Fascinating film seen many times, lots of analysis on TH-cam very interesting interpretations , as far as the end I believe the screenplay wrier and director said it ends how we see it and he didn’t bleed out after the shootout etc, obviously now we can say he had serious ptsd and as far as surviving the gunshots i looked like he had been wounded before so he was a tough man , thanks again!

I think there is a school of thought that the ending (him being a hero and Betsy coming back) is the imaginings of a dying man.
I don’t know if you mentioned it but the bearded guy in the taxi talking about killing his wife was Scorsese.

This one and After Hours are my two favorite Scorsese films. As usual quite fun watching you two react. I would so love to know what you think of After Hours, which is a very very dark comedy and is extremely surreal. It’s kind of one of his most lyrical films, even more so in my opinion than Goodfellas and Raging Bull. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your reaction!

When society's ONLY response to lost men is: _"Yeah well... You know... Just do things, man..."_ Don't be shocked when they start finding purpose in violence.

The ending is actually very interesting. Many people actually believe that the final scene where he's fully recovered, and regains the attention of Betsy was an idea fabricated in the mind of Travis in his final moments. In reality, iris didn't go back to her family, and Betsy didn't forgive him. All that he did and planned for lead to nothing but the death of 4 people including himself. He isn't even recognized as a hero, as the police find a bloody scene where Travis is seemingly just another gang member involved in a neighborhood shooting.

    • @slw59

That makes much more sense. When I first saw this, I’m like “a hero???” But still, if I had one criticism, it would be that that wasn’t made a little clearer.
