Triumph Adventure Mystery - Why are Triumph adventure bikes so likeable?

  • Adventure riders are generally a loyal bunch. You get the GS brigade, the orange brigade, the Italians and those Japanese die-hards. Yet, you bring up Triumph and everyone seems to suspend whatever allegiance they previously held to nod in approval. Why is that? Donovan and Harry attempt to find out.

    Okay admission time. I loved my Tiger solo. Even solo with luggage. I loved the triple whistle. I Ioved the comfort. I hated the wind noise and I hated the top-heaviness. This is the only bike I ever dropped with a pillion and luggage and it happened twice; once on a stall and once just coming to a stop. Solo they are fine but load up a pillion and full luggage and they become really easy to tip due the high CoG of the triple engine. Mine had to go because I do lots of two up riding.

    • @chrisredfield3240
      @chrisredfield3240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like even a small man on tip toes with luggage and a pillion can still balance a r1200gsa. That bike balances like a miracle.

      @@chrisredfield3240 yes! I took a friends 1200 GS for a wee spin and even taking it off the side stand was enlightening, felt like there was no weight to it at all. 👍

      @@critch. i got the f800gs but a r1250gs in blue is looking so tempting. Even comes with the TFT and LED headlight as standard now. Unless you ride one you don't realise how good they are. Balance comfort engine flexibility and handling is hard to beat as a all round package.

    Great review as always. I'm starting to feel a bit jaded by all the electronics, modes, etc on bikes. It's a huge layer of complexity that will at some point break. Deffo wouldn't be great if you were on an adventure!

      Well, I understand your point.
      But wires that connects all of the computers inside rarely go bad. I mean, there are literally no bikes with a kick starter now. It's the same thing but with other things now.

    Main difference for me is the drive shaft... If you buy one of this bike to cross country/continent .. a final drive with zero maintenance worth a little bit of extra money.
    ( Cheers from international audience)

    • @Porschemovies
      @Porschemovies 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I don't have much experience with drive shaft bikes, Don't they kinda under torque and pull the bike to one direction or another? Also they are heavy so on Superbikes that's why not manufacture runs them.

    • @Vince_vanca
      @Vince_vanca 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Porschemovies well... that's was the case maybe in the 70's ...but nowadays you can't feel a shaft drive, especially on a big trail/adventure bikes. you might lose a bit of torque and add a bit of weight.... True, but I don't think that guys on big GS, super Ténéré or tigers are chasing seconds on a racetrack ;-)

    • @artoverkill1
      @artoverkill1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The true reason more bikes don't have shaft drive has less to do with shaft Jack and more to do with parasitic drag shaft drive although it has basically no maintenance does create what's called parasitic drag meaning that your overall horsepower fuel economy and other stats will be lowered simply by the fact that you have a shaft push this is mostly caused by the 90-degree gear angles where the shaft meets the transmission and where it meets the rear ring gear

    Gotta agree with the Brits - I love the 800, the 1200....not so much, just waaay too lardy when compared to the likes of the BMW GS that carries it's weight much lower than the big Tiger 1200. I recently got back from a tour in Thailand on the outgoing Tiger 800, loved every moment, even with my Mrs as a pillion on board. Can't wait to have a go on the new Tiger 900.....couldn't care less if I never ride a Tiger 1200 again....GS beater it aint...Tiger 900 may just be...

Now with a vfr1200F CoG wise I found the perfect bike (not distant conceptually from Triumph 1200, perfect for me).

But i am happy with our Rocket now after having one for 2 years and i also miss the sprint 1050 i had. But thats for selfish reasons. She didnt like those tight corners. Tiger 800 is a great bike as is the 900, but only for what I'd call "Day Adventure Riding". The 1200 is the bike Is choose for carrying fully loaded cases & a passenger, such as some serious adventure rides, like taking on the Dalton Highway in Alaska, especially as it has shaft drive.
    Either makes great daily rides & are WAAAYYYY better than the bland BMW GS range....& a damned sight cheaper too!

    Ah, so true. I bought a new 2017 Triumph 1200 XRT (top equipped model) and drove it 23,500 miles over 99 days from Tampa to Key West to Madawaska ME to Copper Harbor UP to Glacier NP to Fairbanks & Homer AK to Blaine WA to San Isidro CA to UT etc etc to ...47 states, all by myself, at 73 years of age. Wonderful, spectacular bike, and experience. Fell 3 times, dropped it twice. Had helpers, and needed them, to get back up. No harm to me, the bike, or any of God's little creatures in the making of the adventure. It IS a beast of a bike. But I loved the adventure it enabled and its flawless, trouble-free behavior. Last summer did 5,000 miles in 21 days again from Tampa to Jackson MS to Chicago thru MI across the Mackinac to Ottawa and Montreal and backdown the E Coast, making now a total of 49 states. I have written a post detailing my 35,000 miles of experience with the 1200 at my website, which address may not come through on this post. I named my bike, which is an absolute necessity in my opinion, "Nicodemus," because its smart (computers) and powerful (140 HP), but doesn't know God, like its namesake in Chapter 3 of the Gospel of John. You could search for my website, and the travel stories and experience, by Route66Adventure and then try a variant ending. (I don't sell anything on the website--it's just travel adventure stories).

    Great motors but the rest is too road focused. The first manufacturer that releases an alternative to the KTM 790 Adventure with more off-road aggression wins. The market is there.
    We almost got it from Aprilia 8 or 9 years ago with the RXV 450 & 550 twin but they made a scream queen motor, and bitches are always tripping over nothing...
    If the Tiger 800 motor suddenly appeared in an enduro chassis with a 19 up front and a 17 on the back, there would not be enough production capacity at Hinckley to support the demand, the whole world would go crazy.
    Seriously, quick show of hands, who thinks the KTM 1290 Adventure/ Tiger 1200/ BMW1250GS would win at The Roof? How about a 135kg KTM EXC 790 Twin with lights and a number plate stripped off... I'd bet on a podium finish
    What the ReAL adventure crowd wants is an enduro bike with a 6th gear to do 160kph on the highway for 100km without running out of fuel, to get to the real gnar out in the sticks, and then not be stuck with a fake off-road bike that needs TC and ABS to manage it's huge whale ass. We don't mind a bit of buzz from knobbly tyres, we got the real trophies at school not the participation trophies.
    I mean seriously, hill assist? What's next? Hopping a helicopter charter to the top of Everest and take a selfie...?
    Some fake ass bullshit LOL

    The vid does not reflect the original question "What ist it that makes Triumph's special?" and turns into a 800 vs 1200 (in the comments below it goes even against other models / brands). Neither of them is better than the other (nor in comparison to any other brand / model) as it really depends on what you intend to do with it. Still, Triumph has something that goes under someone's skin, that other brands cant offer which - in the end - makes you want one, even against better knowledge. Stay safe

      Versys 650 is one of the most underrated bike atm. Its more a sport tourer than an adventure bike. Great city/commuter bike, comfy for long distance, great in the twisties. Next to no electronics and adjustable suspension. The Weestrom is good too but it's a bit more expensive. I have a KTM 1190 and alot of the time I wish I had something smaller and the verseys would fit the bill perfectly. If only it had an extra 80hp and could tackle some off road.

    Awesome reviews as always. Thx guys! PS I have mentioned this before, but the audio is still a bit bad. Hope you can look into it at some point.
