I've watched a video from the opposite angle, the same ship pulling in to dock. Manuvering in rough seas and winds is extremely difficult, Greece has some very skilled captains on the Blue Star lines. This is amazing manuvering in tight quarters, I commend the captain for his skill 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Good job to the Captain! The good Captain is not the one who to shows off, how good he is in docking in bad weather. The good captain is the one who knows when to say no and cancel the port, not risking peoples' lives.

В советское время были в Новороссийске прогулочные теплоходики, сначала Радуга назывались,потом капитан Капуста,капитан Шапурко,я в лагере пионерском отдыхал в Кринице,так они утром прямо на галечный пляж выскакивали.С носовой части лестница подавалась для посадки пассажиров.Причем шторм им помехой не был.

Και εγώ νομίζω ότι μπορούσε να δέσει. Απλά δεν πήρε τα ρίσκα. Και η ίδια η εταιρεία μάλλον δεν έχει πρόβλημα με αυτό. Οπότε όλοι ευχαριστημένοι, εκτός από τους επιβάτες.

Looks more like Beaufort 7 to me... reading the Wiki: "Sea heaps up. Some foam from breaking waves is blown into streaks along wind direction. Moderate amounts of airborne spray."
this is more than 10. do not forget that the problem is the strong wind and not the wave height..... this is very close to the shore (to the island) so the sea is relativelly calm. everyone who has travelled to Tinos knows that inside the port there are times when the sea is standing still and the wind blows more than 70 knots. Only a Greek captain can do that in a port so shallow and with many traps (rocks, reefs etc.) this ship is too big for the specific port and the wind with a force of more than 70 is pushing it hard towards the wrong direction. In extreme situations like this it is very easy to run aground.....
The Greek ferries do not run if there is a forecast of over a force 7. The Coast Guard stops them from leaving port. If you have a private yacht, you can leave if you sign a declaration saying that you don't hold the Coast Guard responsible for any problems that you may have out there. The meltemi wind blows quite constantly through the Cyclades in July & August.

All of the year but the stronger winds is in the summer the high score is 11 beaufort.Theese strong winds called meltemi and theese strong winds reduce the summer temperature.
You got to hand it to them...that is a lot cheaper than building a dock and terminal! No fuss no muss get off the ship mate just follow the sand castles!

@@dimitrios3862 Κάτι δεν έγινε κατανοητό στο σχόλιο μου. Όταν έχει πολύ αέρα από πρυμα, συνήθως βάζουν και τις μηχανές στο ανάποδα τόσο ώστε να μη παίρνουν όλη τη ταση οι καβοι. Το ίδιο κι άμα έχει αερα απο πρώρα η μπονάτσα θα βάλει λίγο τις μηχανες στο προσω ειτε για να μη πάρει όλη τη τάση η άγκυρα, είτε για να το κρατησει χωρις άγκυρα για λίγο. Εδώ με τόσο αέρα δε κράταγε το αναποδα και απλά το παράτησε και καλά έκαμε . Απλά πιστεύω πως το ξερε από πριν τι θα γινόταν αλλά μαγκιά του που δοκίμασε.

Στα 10 μποφόρ ο άνεμος αρχίζει να αποσπά σταγόνες από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας η των κυμάτων στα 11 το φαινόμενο εντείνεται και στα 12 ελατώνεται σοβαρά η ορατότητα.
Προφανώς υπάρχουν και όρια. Δε χρειάζεται σώνει και καλά να πιάσει εκτός ορίων και να το σπάσει το πλοίο. Αφού έκρινε οτι έπρεπε να φύγει πολύ καλά έκανε. Αν σαν επιβάτης αποφασίζεις να ταξιδεψεις με πολλά μποφόρ να ξέρεις οτι παίρνεις και το ρίσκο να μην ταξιδέψεις καθόλου διότι το δρομολόγιο μπορεί να ακυρωθεί ή όπως βλέπουμε στο βίντεο να κάνει go around και να πας αλλού. Πάρε και ένα weather forecast πριν κλείσεις εισητήρια κυρίως τον χειμώνα
Captain should have known bow trusters would not be sufficient to move this ship laterally against this strong wind...should have avoided the harbour all together!
I agree about the bow thrusters. However, this specific captain knows his ship very well as well as the tricky harbor with shallow waters in some points. For me, he did very well leaving the port without docking.
@@ΠανΠολίτης What I'm saying is that he did not have to take unnecessary risks to venture into a tight, shallow dangerous harbour doing all these fancy but risky manoeuvres when it was very obvious wind conditions would not have allowed him to dock safely...he knows his ship very well, no doubt! @@FrancoisLabelle-yf8tj Nothing fancy, nothing risky my friend. it was only a routine procedure. If the Greek captains were not regularly trying to dock under rough weather conditions especially in winter and during August, most of the scheduled trips to Tinos and Mykonos would be cancelled.

So what was going on here? The ferry comes into port really fast, stops on a sixpence, does a 180, and squirts back out of port. That is some crazy stuff! Did the captain realise he couldn't dock safely and left at full speed? I'd have thought he would have known that before hand and chose not to endanger the vessel by coming in at a crazy rate of knots. I don't get it. Anyone? The news story....'passenger ship runs aground in Med, captain runs away to avoid prosecution' is a news story I've seen a few times.
I was once on a ferry in wild conditions coming into Wellington New Zealand from the South Island. It was stormy and we hit the dock. But the captain decided to tie up and stay. Later on I found out that the bow thruster failed and they didn't know until they needed it at full power by which point it was too late.
Yes, the captain realized he couldn't dock safely and left. Sometimes you don't know if it's possible to dock, until the last minute - as the wind speed changes by the hour.

Yeah, they are very good to have. But they usually have a limit in how hard wind from the side they can handle and I think this was too much.

I have been sailing with 7 Beaufort. I would never try to sail with the wind shown in the video.

Πάρε και ένα weather forecast πριν κλείσεις εισητήρια κυρίως τον χειμώνα

Captain should have known bow trusters would not be sufficient to move this ship laterally against this strong wind...should have avoided the harbour all together!
I agree about the bow thrusters. However, this specific captain knows his ship very well as well as the tricky harbor with shallow waters in some points. For me, he did very well leaving the port without docking.
@@ΠανΠολίτης What I'm saying is that he did not have to take unnecessary risks to venture into a tight, shallow dangerous harbour doing all these fancy but risky manoeuvres when it was very obvious wind conditions would not have allowed him to dock safely...he knows his ship very well, no doubt! Another reason he should have known better...
@@FrancoisLabelle-yf8tj Nothing fancy, nothing risky my friend. it was only a routine procedure. If the Greek captains were not regularly trying to dock under rough weather conditions especially in winter and during August, most of the scheduled trips to Tinos and Mykonos would be cancelled.

So what was going on here? The ferry comes into port really fast, stops on a sixpence, does a 180, and squirts back out of port. That is some crazy stuff! Did the captain realise he couldn't dock safely and left at full speed? I'd have thought he would have known that before hand and chose not to endanger the vessel by coming in at a crazy rate of knots. I don't get it. Anyone? The news story....'passenger ship runs aground in Med, captain runs away to avoid prosecution' is a news story I've seen a few times.
I was once on a ferry in wild conditions coming into Wellington New Zealand from the South Island. It was stormy and we hit the dock. But the captain decided to tie up and stay. Later on I found out that the bow thruster failed and they didn't know until they needed it at full power by which point it was too late.
Yes, the captain realized he couldn't dock safely and left. Sometimes you don't know if it's possible to dock, until the last minute - as the wind speed changes by the hour.
