  • With its wider body, the 1941 Ford finally allowed comfortable three-across seating. But something new arrived under the hood for ’41…Ford’s first inline six cylinder engine since 1906. Watch and explore!

Last December I purchased the ‘42 Super DeLuxe fordor that was purchased new by my wife’s great grandfather. His grandson bought it in ‘58 and parked it in ‘70. It’s gonna take a lot to get it back on the road, but it’s cool to own a car that has been in the family for more than 80 years!

You mentioned WWII rationing and old tires and such. My dad talked about how his grandfather used to save old inner tubes and use them to line the insides of tires that wore down enough to develop holes where the tread used to be. I think they used every material available for that as tires just weren’t available. They made stuff work and last.

My maternal grandfather had a tire store from 1915 until he died in 1957. I was born in 1961 so I didn't get a chance to talk to him and ask him about what he did during the World War 2 years.😢

Gasoline was rationed during WWII not to save gas, which we could produce enough of, but to save tires. Tires were made mostly of natural rubber at the time, and a large amount of rubber came from Asia and was in then hands of the Japanese. Brazil and South America could produce enough rubber for the war effort, but only just. Both the Allies and Germany stepped up their research on synthetic rubber during the war.

Another history lesson Steve, great episode, from your 39 to 41 period, for me the most amazing era of automobilia, to think there's a junkyard car, from the very year of America's day of Infamy, I'm talking of course of Pearl Harbour, how quickly America turned from producing luxury cars to the implements of war. To own a car from 1941 would be a privilege. Apologies for commenting so late, the time shift from USA to UK, still, love watching these videos. Keep em coming Steve.

That six replaced the small V8-60 although a four cylinder version of this was available in panel trucks. I had a 50 with a six. I was told it had 9.5:1 compression. I don’t know but it had a healthy growl and contemporary road tests put it outrunning the V8 to 60 mph.

Hi Steve great video on this 41 Ford. That title looks a little familiar 🤔 😁. We had a little mix up with titles yesterday. Some of us 1st responders caught that yesterday. 😆 That is a surprise to see still out there in the Junkyard. I would have imagined someone long ago would have snagged that up. As you mentioned a good body to hotrod or maybe an outlaws track car. Well I drove all day yesterday and made Ohio. I'm here for 3 nights at Dark Star Jubilee X here in Thornville. Hi Mr. Horting 👋🏼 I hope this makes more sense now know their was a title mix up in yesterday's Junkyard Crawl video. It may have been corrected by the time you saw the video. Hi 🖐🏼 Mr. Google that's pretty cool story about working as a DJ during college. This helps my point about your much needed TH-cam ch. You must have an excellent speaking voice. Thanks to all who have commented on my comments here on the Crawl. Love y'all! Thank a veteran this weekend and don't forget the ones that didn't come home. Funny how they lost the gas filler door for one model year, with the new 1949. 1950 did away with the exposed cap and the door was back.
I’m pretty sure Ford didn’t put full floating axles/hubs on the passenger cars, that those are tapered shafts as on Chrysler products (up until the early 1960s), American Motors and Studebaker. And those old Fords had a 5-on-5.5 lug pattern on passenger cars until ‘49 when they went to 5-on-4.5. Half ton trucks carried on with the larger pattern on half ton pickups until, well, when?

Great video, again, I learned so much as always. I never knew about the flathead V6. That's cool (and not surprising) that the '41 Ford had one year only styling. I hope someone restores it because of it's rarity and installs a modern Ford V6.
I read that Ford produced their first OHV V6 in 1965 in Cologne Germany.

No VIN, can't win, but back then, they were more serial numbers than VIN numbers. The 1941 Ford six cylinder cars were considered 1GA models and the serial numbers ran from 000001 through 034800. As stated, the six cylinder had 90 HP and was on a 114" wheelbase. No tag, can't brag, but possibly code M3929 Harbor Gray originally.

Another way of telling a 6 cylinder car in that series is to look at the heater hose locations on the firewall, the tubes on each side in the recessed area are 6 cylinder, and would be behind the block of the v8 and you wouldn't be able to get the hoses on. The v8 version, the heater hose locations would both be to the right of the resessed area and a couple inches higher. Another way to tell is the radiator and mounts would be farther forward than the v8
