- The Washington Post's Joel Garreau takes a look at an upcoming "Star Wars"-themed toy that uses new technology to allow the user to levitate an object ... with their mind. Video by Akira Hakuta / The Washington Post
@32ndegree concentrating on something will not significantly increase heart rate and body temperature, especially not enough to be measured by such a device. Plus, heart rate cannot be measured by attaching a measurement device to the head, because there are no major arteries in the superficial skin area of the skull. The device is an EEG that measures brainwaves in the frontal cortex and parietal (or occipital lobe (not sure which one)) lobe. It detects an increase in beta-brainwaves.
I Tried this at comic con!!!
my friend was good at it
Well 200 years from now ill be dead
No, it's legit and not that hard to make one yourself. However it is difficult to contol, but it gets easier with training.
starwars toy
extension cord??? mind control fail
lame................LAME!!! it would be great if no machine would be provided then it would be cool.......but this is just the machine doing it..
DARPA wants mind-controled F-22's? They'll have to move the pilot out of the cockpit for that. I don't think any person could be trained so that their miond could transmit thoughts to a computer while the blood is rushing out of their heads in a hi-G turn. The human mind just can't handle so much stimulai (SP?) at once. Might as well make them AI controled. Plus by the time we have technology that's good enough for an F-22, we'll have moved on to another breed of fighter jet fr sure.
Your not really doing anything pro-actively to make the ball rise, or the fan blow. All you have to do is think about anything... Seems like a crock-o-crap to me. In other words, they could make it so any thought you have could make a computer do a task, one which is completely unrelated to the thought. More or less any brain activity makes the device turn on, and do whatever the device is designed to do.. I'm more impressed with the EKG than the ping-pong ball and fan.
In other words it makes an electrical connection using the musculature in your forehead to have an electric motor create the force to levitate the ball. No trick, but no great accomplishment either. Show me a ball levitating without the device. Then I'll be impressed
yeah kinda agree with that..
but to be fair, if the brain power can be harnessed, then what else can be stimulated by this thing..
he even says in this "the application is limitless" which shows theres room for further improvement with this which is interesting to say the least
Really? Some guy from a toy company got a Washington Post writer to refer to the act of turning on fan hooked up to a plastic tube by thinking hard about literally anything as "levitating an object with your mind? That's not a miracle of science, that's a miracle of marketing.
It worked! For me, what worked best was thinking about a VERY rapidly spinning black hole and the ping-pong ball shot up thru the ceiling and left the solar system @ warp speed!
1 hour later Baby-Farks Mcgee showed up!
This thing is sweet!
It is the beginning of many brave and scary new dreams. More than a simple toy its future applications when perfected are mind boggling. May we have the wisdom to use this new technology wisely?
The EEG used in this thing and the mind-machine interface required to fly a fighter, with your mind, without dying, are two totally different things. It's like comparing a nuclear submarine to a bop-it.
yea, its fake. of course the brain has electric in it, so they made some stupit magnet speaker tht when putting onr ur head and u think harder it will start turning. so its nothign special,
exactly, as it is they need advanced computers just to maintain the plane's balance. a human can't make those decisions and adjustments fast enough even if they weren't going through several g's.
Looks interesting, but I'll wait until the price goes down. (And having THIS on the computer doesn't cut it) *Concentrates on the biology of the chromosome* *Ball goes through roof*
Can you just imaging the day where you focus your attention on a shape on the screen to log onto youtube? think of your password, see it in your mind, and you can log in!
hmm this could be a good 1st step for bionics that dont require implants in the brain !
this makes my mind think of the possibilities of what i could do with that simple toy.
I've seen other stuff like this applied to a gmod game where all you do is lift objects and move them around in the virtual environment. It took two people to lift a car.
the Japanese have something like this. Its a game with a ball and 2 people. The ball bounces toward the person who is concentrating less. So its kind of like a mind battle.
Papo furado!!! A garota conversando, não está nem concentrada na porra da bola e ela danada girando dentro do tubo!! kkkkkkk...
If the brain wasn't in a SKULL, maybe it could be designed with enough cushioning to take them Gs. But by then we'll have inertial damping, so it's a moot point.
That's because it was set on Easy (Padawan Learner). Don't you listen? This thing has difficulty levels.
well put. It would be one thing if you put the head set on then make the ball move without a cylinder with a fan making pressure under a ping pong ball..
Cute, but hardly new.. They had this for the pc about 12 years ago... (Minddrive)
You can get that on Ebay for like 20 bucks with a buncha games... ;)
so now we are teaching our selves.... how to focus our minds and achieve a task..... good job... Keep up the good Work....
this toy might help humanity a lil...
there is a guy who made a wheelchair which works on a similar principle, you think about moving your left arm, you turn left
there are already much more advanced neural interfaces available as consumer electronics, google the "OCZMSNIA Neural Impulse Actuator"
Buy a PC Gamer magazine sometime. I've already seen 2 reviews for these things for PC. DURR HURR HURR.
omg that is so cool! ... though i dont know if i would pay a bit over $100 for it...
requires that one have a brain. that could be a major drawback for widespread sales.
"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."
@x1plus1x do you have to be so negative...critigue yes but come on
Some part of my body levitates too with proper brain signals.
@lakersmaster yeah they need to make a blue tooth one.
@ble1202 hahahah ahamburgers
damn did that smell good
THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGINS =D
and im in that time : )
black geeza looks like the darpa cheif from mgs :D
