What great capacity people back then had for entertaining themselves. Singing around the piano and feeling the beauty of melody and lyrics. No taking selfies, no texting, no talking over each other. Such, such were the joys! I can think of no other song that fits Irene Dunne's voice as well as this one. The pathos of Janou touches my heart as she reminds me of my Grannies and all my little old Great Aunts, all now long gone.
I'm so glad there are others out there that appreciate this movie. It has long been one of my favorite movies. I love the way C.Boyer looks at Irene when she sings the song and then his grandmother. Maria O. was a wonderful actress too. It was just such a lovely movie and I have to agree with globalman that it is superior to the C. Grant and D. Kerr movie. However that movie was also good but this version is my favorite. And "yes" that scene was magical. Lorraine D.
it's quite a quaint scene, I love it how the young lady starts humming just because she loves to sing. She's afraid to hum to loud because it would bother the pianist. She reminds me of me singing along with my Mom.
Incredible! I never knew this version existed. It must be the pejudice against black&white films. The Cary Grant film is charming but this is superiour. There is more passion, warmth and tenderness. Also, with all respect to Miss Kerr, Irene Dunn was more beautiful and really could sing and beautifully. Wish I could see the entire film. Thank you for this posting.
One of my top favorite scenes from movies..period. LOVE AFFAIR (1939) is top notch Hollywood and Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer are perfect. Maria Ouspenskaya played Nanou, Boyer's grandmother, with such charm and watching her play the piano, and hearing Irene sing PLAISIR D'AMOUR, was simply magical. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming moment on YOU TUBE!
@@ashlynsisk2094 Yes, this song, written back in the late 1700's led to the song "Can't Help Falling in Love" (some call the song "Wise Men Know") by Mr. Elvis Presley.
"Does anyone know if M. Ouspenskaya could actually play?" Maria Ouspenskaya is playing the music we hear in this scene. Her hand movements match the notes. Generally, when actors couldn't play piano, they were filmed from an angle at which you couldn't see their hands. (e.g., Kate Hepburn in Undercurrent).
Thank you! There are two other wonderful song scenes in that movie: when Dunn plays ukulele and three girls sing "Wishing will make it so" and then the same song with the childrens choir later in the movie. It would be great if you uploaded those scenes as well!
Just watched the movie Love Affair ..... counterpart to An Affair to Remember ....love this song x and the same actress played the 5:295:29 grandmama in both movies x
@tomkellycartoons LOVE AFFAIR is waaay better than Cary Grant's version, I used to love An Affair to Remember too but after watching LOVE AFFAIR, I just FORGOT about the remake.....IRENE WAS THE BEEESSSSTTT
That is for sure. She was the best actress maybe ever I guess. Certainly the most talented as far as believability and her singing was absolutely first rate. Such a lovely trained vocalist. Why oh why hasn’t she received a lifetime achievement award? There is no one more deserving than she. It is never too late is it? How could we get a movement started to get that done? Anyone???
@ChristophePhilippe your comment basically says everything I wanted to. :) I don't like the remake, and this is one of my favourite movies. I love all the actors and just... how natural they all seem, unrehearsed, realistic.
I have both movies Love affair and An affair to remember. Both were beautiful but iprefer this one.irene Dunne sang herself the songs although Deborah Kerr was very good too but she was dubbed again by Marni Nixon in the songs.Dunne was a better comedianne. Both Boyer and Grant were very good but for me Grant was a bit older for the role in the remake. (Remember that he was born in 1904 and Kerr in1921).I would have wanted to see both Dunne and Grant together in this movie in 1939 when they made many great movies together., Dunne was an excellent soprano like was also Mac Donald and I prefer her thirties movies. ,
Does anyone know if M. Ouspenskaya could actually play? I also prefer this to the Cary Grant one. I love Cary but I much prefer Dunne to Kerr =) and I like a lot of the directing and writing choices in this one better. For instance this is IMO a much more beautiful song than the one they wrote for "affair to remember."
He was set to do a movie with Marlene Dietrich and when she arrived on the set, a short, stumpy, balding man said hello. She knowledged him with a distracted nod, looking for the international heartthrob Boyer. Well, after an hour in his dressing room, the homely guy appeared as Himself. I’m surprised she was surprised, given her intimacy with smoke and mirrors.
No, this one, with due respect, is the best of the three versions. Especially hateful was Katherine Hepburn saying fuck a duck. Altogether a poor version
Can't help but cry everytime I watch this scene. The melody, Irene's voice, the piano... 😭😭❤️

Irene Dunne was nothing but class. From her acting and what I've read about her she was first class. And quite a talented singer!

"Plaisir d'amour" was composed almost two and a half centuries ago. Still strikes a chord!
Oh what a marvelous movie! The song means 'in love the pleasure is for a moment but the sorrow is for life'...
What a captivating and memorable scene!
It was a very touching scene from a great tearjerker. Thanks

Pleasing Love. Too bad this song wasn't nominated for an Academy Award in this movie-absolutly beautiful and beautifully sung.
A marvelous gem from the Golden Days of movies.
Maria Ouspenskya..she was a legend.
Two or more centuries has not dimmed this songs impact``
What a wonderful scene! Better than any version. My beautiful Irene Dunne1

I found this by accicent. I've never seen the film but will look out for it now. This is really lovely.
Thanks for posting it.
We need this film restored!
Criterion did Leo McCarey's "Make Way For Tomorrow", but have ignored this movie of his, which is far superior.
Grandmother was born in 1876, Dunne was born in 1898 and Boyer in 1899. Makes the film even more intriguing.
the melody of this song reminds so much lullaby "Falling in love with you" to me.
The song performed by Elvis is believed to be a derivative of this melody, actually.

Can’t help falling in love with you ! Song was based on Plaisirs!
Thanks!!!
That must be the granny that everybody wants to have
beautifully done . . .
I totally agree with you. We need a good edition for this marvelous movie!
Maria Ouspenskaya probably most memorable as the gypsy lady paired with Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolfman.

There is also the Arlen Koeler song Sing my heart Dunne sings in New York before the accident.

What a beautiful song from the 1700's. Reminds me of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love" song.
"Can't Help Falling in Love" was adapted from this song.

Marianne Faithful's version is great but Irene is a dove & an angel & sings from the soul.
Two Thumbs Up!!
