    Van der sar is criminally underrated. Rolls Royce of a goalkeeper. Used to make everything look so easy and looked so calm in everything he did. How he isn't talked about up there with the very best in the premier league era idek

      And that’s a massive problem United have with De Gea.. He’s silent, only makes noise when he’s complaining, never before.. VDS didn't need to be the best shot stopper (and he was a very good one) because his ability to organise and Marshall his defenders was top notch. IMHO it's what De Gea lacks the most.

    • @Sir_P
      @Sir_P ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Key factor is that he wasn’t organising an ordinary defence, on their own they were world class too. We have players in the centre of defence that don’t even scan over their shoulders to know where each are, that’s not the job of the keeper. For the most part a keepers job is to just give you a heads up, at least 90% of the rest is on you

Of course people have Peter as he was there throughout the treble and he's a great, just felt that our defense was more secure around Van der Sar. Edwin was also in his mid 30's when we got him and he solved all of our keeper issues. No Weird stuff from the Howard's, Carrol's and the Barthez's of our squad.

    100% agree on the nerves as a keeper, the stuff going through your head, it happened to me everytime the opposition approached midfield with the ball. All the mistakes I could make, don't get chipped from midfield, don't sit too deep and allow a breakaway....
    I was a full time outfield player, played 2nd Keeper on pretty much every team I played for from through kids and into my 30's. I was a completely different person pre-game when I knew I was playing in net, I had to get into the head space to throw my body and face into an on-rushing players feet. If I showed up for a match and was suddenly told I was in net, that process was missed, I didn't have the same mindset or intensity to do the job.

    It makes no sense to compare but let's do it anyway. Schmeichel and Van der Sar were equally great. Schmeichel, like Oliver Kahn was a grizzly bear of a goalkeeper who earned instant respect by his team and the opponent.
    Van der Sar had his organizing skill, his length and reflexes. It also helped that he was formed in Van Gaal's Ajax which basically turned him into an extra defender.

      van der Sar also had a bucketload of shoot-out heartaches (CL final 96, 96 Euros quarters, 98 World Cup semi, 00 euros semi) before he won his first in the 2004 Euros against Sweden in the quarter-final and then of course the CL final of 2008! Schmeichel was also great at saving pens, he saved van Basten's penalty in 1992 in the semi-final against Holland on their way to national glory and who can forget Big Pete's save against Bergkamp in the 99 FA Cup semi-final! All this to say I'd still take van der Sar over Schmeichel but only by the slightest and slightest of margins and that hurts to not choose Big Pete because I loved him growing up!

    I played semi pro since aged 17, played for my county rep side for 3 years at u19 level when I turned 16, had England Schoolboy trials, and captained in the FA cup, as a goalkeeper. The higher I went I hated training & warms ups increasingly the higher I went. You say Goalkeepers do not need to be fit or dont do much for half the game.. Mental preperation and self confidence was my key to success as a goalkeeper, this does not switch off for 1 second during the 90 minutes where as outfield players can drift in and out of the game, I would play outfield in Sunday amatuer league as a youth player to improve my footwork, understanding of the game in each position, physical fitness and to be comfortable on the ball whilst under pressure. I never once in my career stepped onto a field and felt inferior to my opposite number, even if they had a good game I could respect that as a sportsman and feel I could do the same if not better in every situaton that was presented to my opposite number. A goalkeeper is mind over matter and must believe in themselves, if the team is to stand any chance of believing in him. I was totally behind Dean Hendersons words the other week when leaving Man Utd and can relate to those circumstances as I have never waited around to be a number 2, he took some slack for this but it shows true signs of inner belief, as proved on the opening weekend and will continue to over the season
