The thing about the 1D question (and their somehow dismissive answer) is that they’ve been asked that since the beginning of their career, over and over again. After a while it gets tiring tbh. And 5sos also doesn’t consider themselves a boyband, since they all play instruments, so they’ve always fought pretty hard to shy away from that comparison. And while at some point they were close, over the years they definitely lost contact with each other. That doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate their time together tho, they made sure to include a 1D reference in their “Old me” music video, which details their history as a band.

Calum definitely doesn't talk much in most interviews, but it also really depends and also form what time the interview is from. there are definitely interviews where he talks more :) and about the 1d question , they've heard that question so much and they are so often compared to them and are put as a "boyband" who is still almost part of 1d even tho they have their own name completely. I think that that is the reason they were so short about it, they did talk about it in their 5sos talks 10 years type thing btw but yea

I think the most I've heard him talk is on their 10 year podcast, which you should definitely check out if you haven't already. Have you watched the Want You Back music video, it's really cool. The song is amazing.
If there's one thing I've realised from the podcast episodes 5sos did for the 10 year anniversary is that they weren't really as close with 1D as it seemed and its nobody's fault really cause 1D at that time were ridiculously busy. Plus, to this day 5sos boys get associated with 1D and its literally been a decade to a point where a) one would get frustrated b) they don't get their due credit because of it. So that's why their answer is completely justified and they're right about what they said, they are. They thank 1D and are appreciative of them every chance they get when they do it willingly, they talked about them in the 10 year show and also payed ode to them in the old me video so it's there
After the ten year podcast you realize they didn't actually choose want you back as the first Single and wanted it to be Younblood. So I find it interesting how they had to talk about it in interviews why they think want you back is the perfect first single when they didn't really believe that, if got it right from the podcast.
I mean, regarding One Direction I think they are just FED UP of being asked of that. And, honestly, the fact that they are celebrating their single release and One Direction STILL gets mentioned must be frustrating for them. I would if I was in their place

About the one direction thing, all of the one direction members own some shares in 5sos so they already make them a bunch of money. It's okay if they don't want to talk about them all the time in their own interviews.
I do think that 1d helped them but at the same time and as a directioner I do think that being associated with one direction all the time would do them no great and it actually made it a bit harder for them over the years to get there respect they deserved as band, not that 1d wasn't cool, tbh I think only weird people make fun of boybands and one direction, but they've never liked being called a boyband and I'm sure they didn't like to live in their shadow, also they did talk about them in their 10 year anniversary podcast thingy, where they kinda broke down their history, there are many interviews of them just saying good stuff about them, but in order to establish a name, for the first time with one direction so far away they needed to just be 5sos, idk if I made any sense but yeah

I have seen 5Sos talk about how, I believe it was Louis who found their You Tube uploads and got them to open for 1D, and they have been appreciative etc, but I would think they are tired of it getting brought up and getting compared to 1D. I believe each of the 1D boys have a 10% investment stock in 5Sos. They were promoting them pretty good when they were touring. I remember Niall and Louis tweeted about their songs/albums.
You should do Ariana Grande's Zach Sang interview, she has a few with him as they're very close friends but the sweetener one is my favourite or the thank u next one :)
you should react to one of sabrina carpenter's interviews on zach sang!! they're all really fun & you get to know her well, but a personal favourite of mine is her pushing 20 interview (one of the most recent ones)
