    Here I am, six years later studying orgo from the same guy that taught me chem back in high school.. God Bless Professor Dave.

    Thanks for the video, Dave. I appreciate how you start off by explaining the basics and then go into applying the concept through examples. I find this method very useful when learning. I'm using a lot of your videos for my organic chemistry courses. Thanks again!

      I agree. Awesome vid with helpful examples, Professor Dave! By the way, ChemSimplied, I checked out your channel, you've got something good going on there too. Helps with my Gen Chem. Thanks, both of you!

    Damn I'm taking biochemistry now and neither my professor or my book went into depth about Fischer projections. They were just given to us. Thanks!

    3:42 " we got the OH to the left which would be the dash..." All horizontal ones are wedges so why would the left one be a dash? all OHs are pointing towards us since we are looking at the fisher from the point of the plane of the board i.e from above. Maybe I don't remember my orgo properly but I m fairly sure that the left OH is not a dash (unless you mean that the chain is looked from the side then that left OH is seen as a dash). If you look at the last drawing from the top as the eye shows then that OH should be wedge. It is only dash if you look at the fisher from lets say a 4 o'clock position...or am I derping

      In that section I am translating the Fischer projection to line notation. Looking directly at the Fischer projection is being translated to a perspective that is within the plane of the board. If you're in the board facing rightwards on the board, groups to your left are on dashes, groups to your right are on wedges.

      @le_med 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains I just wanted to point that out because for students that are just learning about it they hear that in fisher when groups are horizontal they are wedges and then 2 mins later they are told that a horizontal group is a dash. I recognized that this was from the perspective of being to the right looking at the molecule but 1st year orgo student would not...just needed to clarify that :)

    How do we know from what angle should we look at the structure and then determine what is pointing outwards and what is pointing inwards? What is it that made you look at one structure from the angle BD and at the other structure you looked from above (first part of the video)

    I was wondering when assigning the priority of 2nd or 3rd, the differing point would be for example a carbon in a benzene ring (sum of atomic numbers of bound atoms would be 18 in total with the carbon double bond plus another carbon bond) vs a carbon bound to oxygen, carbon and hydrogen (giving a total atomic number of 13). Why is it that the carbon in the benzene ring is assigned a lower priority? (this is seen in S,S-Reboxetine)

    It seems so random though, how do you choose certain OH's to be dashes and certain ones to be wedges. Also how do you know which H's will become dashes and wedges in such a long Fischer projection

    unfortunately examples used are only the easiest possible examples, and then there are no examples with multiple stereocenters in a row on a Fischer projection... maybe try to do the easy examples and then upgrade to less easy examples like on a 3 or 4 carbon chain Fischer projection

    Hey Professor Dave...
    So I wanted to tell you something I learnt just recently, and it just confuses me a lot!
    So in school, we were taught to neglect the heaviest atom and then to rotate the molecule to get the H atom to be positioned to the front (such that its facing us). I dunno why, but I always get the wrong answer, after following the school method. Could you pls help me clear my doubt.
    Thank you for this video btw

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well that would be because that's the opposite of what you're supposed to do! the lowest priority group has to be facing away from you.
