We owe Madness a debt of gratitude for all there class and entertainment. You are out of the top draw. Thank you for all your timeless creative records past and present.
One of the most underrated songs ever. Saw Madness perform this on the Jonathan Ross show many, many years ago. One of those rare songs that you hear for the first time and absolutely love it. Thanks for posting.
Grown up listening to and loving Madness music. This really does feel like the return to the Madness glory days of old.... Love this track, upbeat and catchy lyrics too.
Grown up listening to madness with my dad. Now my baby sister has started to listen to them.. their new album. She's four and knows all the words to this and other songs. Nothing better than madness!
Suggs has a strange power over me. He is a mesmerising frontman. Been fascinated by him since I was a little girl in the 80's and he still holds me amazed now I am 40!
Same! Can't take my eyes off him. Seeing him live for the first time a few weeks ago has put me on another planet. His charisma was off the charts in person!! 😂❤
That's an amazing song! Absolutely accurate and subtly realising the spirit of Madness that I love. All grown up and wiser, those cheerful boys who drove me crazy in my 18! That's what the perfect Englishman looks like in my mind.
Beautiful, bittersweet and wistful. Classic Madness. Well done chaps. I'm so glad you got back together and started writing again. You've made a middle-aged bloke very happy!!
When I was a teenager back in the 80s i used to listen to madness all the time and I fell in love with them and then, I stumbled across this video, I thought what a lovely song, now I find myself listening again 40 years later. What a terrific band, I wish I could thank them personally for the joy they Gave me.
I am finding this song growing on me more and more. It is a true master piece in every way, lyrics, music, story line...... Very Skakespearian..... My English Brothers, may I extend a hand of friendship to you. Greetings from a Boer in South Africa.
One if the best lyrics and melodies I have ever heard. Very deep if you were ever desperately in love...and faced the same situation! And my favourite track from Madness (apart from their "Classics")! 1.000.000 points out of 5... :))
Their music has matured along with them. The song is more solid than some of their earlier stuff and is almost big-band style. Not to say their earlier music wasn't amazing. This just has a less raw and more polished feel to it, and it suits them just as their earlier music suited them being younger and more energetic.
Perfect observation. However I think that in addition, their audience has also matured. A perfect fit. Re visiting some of their less known numbers, I am in absolute awe, in a way which youth did not allow me to appreciate. Under appreciated or not ... Frigging treasures imo
Exactly this. A marvelous progression. I know some like only the earlier stuff, but the latest and recent songs are fantastic! They grow, we grow. I'm thrilled to have so many types of Madness! ❤
This Band topped a chart in every decade they released in the 20th Century!, One step beyond topped the French chart in 1979, I think in the 80's they topped charts 6 times, including in Sweden, Canada & a couple of times in Ireland!, & Divine Madness topped the UK & French charts in the 90's, Singles/Studio albums/Compilation albums that hit the Tops were- The Rise & Fall (SA), Complete Madness (CA), Divine Madness (CA), One Step Beyond(S), House of Fun (S), Our House (S), Wings of a Dove (S),
I was luck enough to work with him many years ago, and he was so charming and brilliant and I was so relieved as most people are disappointing. A top bloke with immense talent.
The great thing about Madness is that we can grow older with them without having to grow up. Magic
Personally i think this is the best ever song madness have recorded,
brilliant Suggs and madness.
The saxophone is absolutely brill.
Does anyone know where i can get the backing track for this song.
John Haddow yes or Herbert these are great!
Agree mate, just magic.
John Haddow
Sorry, no. But it's amazing with the lyrics
This song is just typical of madness. Fun , but cleverly done with touches of darkness and melancholy. Absolutely superb 👌 👏
We owe Madness a debt of gratitude for all there class and entertainment.

Heart-achingly beautiful. That pang of regret when by circumstance, or foolishness, you know you've missed the chance of something special.
Absolutely
This song is just as good as anything from the 'classic era'... bloody love it!
This is one of their best songs, a gem.
Actually this is the work of a mature band right in their groove. Possibly the best thing they ever did.

I love that MADNESS still use the delightful Piano arpeggios and Tenor Sax to give that unique Madness sound. Brilliant!!

My English Brothers, may I extend a hand of friendship to you.
Greetings from a Boer in South Africa.
This song happened to me many times in my youth….to those girls who I walked away from and never ended up with…I wish you well.

Best madness record in years!! Suggs and co, like fine wine, the Bowie of the normal bloke in the 80,90, and one more step beyond!!
Heard it this morning. Playing it since. Remembering my youth. Emotional. Well done guys!
Nutty boys. Back to there best. Love it. One step beyond.
The greatest group I ever heard..saw them live in brum.....only group i wanted to watch live.
Putting those ordinary almost confessional thoughts to such an arrangement is exactly what makes Madness so great.
One of my most favorite bands and still together after all this time. Wow, respect and much love still digging the music boys
Gives me the shivers all over my 52 years old body.
Fan of Madness since they once came to Brussels back in 79 I think....
Absolutely brilliant! A true masterpiece. The simplicity, right down to the basics, does it get any better than this - what matureness! Real life.
I'm 56.....that sliding door moment has been and gone in 1989.....will I ever see her again.....
