  • A few laps from the afternoon session of the track day. The golf has never felt so good! Super planted and nice balance on/off throttle, would still like to tweak the back a little stiffer to help rotation, but all in all, it felt really well set up.
    This session starts out at a steady pace, you can see I'm still playing with lines and best gear selection for the top hairpin. I had to ease on the breaks upto the hairpin because the rear inside wheel liked to lock under heavy braking due to there been little weight over the rear.
    Car Specs:
    Chassis - KW V3 Coilovers, Solid camber adjust topmounts, standard oem bushes and roll bars.
    Interior: full 6 point roll cage, fixed bucket seats, 6 point harnesses. Full carpets, front sound deadening and doorcards remain,
    Engine: 1.8 8v GTI engine, full stainless exhaust (4-1), Newman 268 Cam. (approx 125-130bhp)
    Weight: Approx 950-980kg
    Tyres: Nankang NS-2R

    That 268 sounds just so right for a 8-valver, are you pushing 6000-6500 rpms or alike ?
    Think your car would be cool to see in a "present your car" kind of video - we're all in here asking for tech spec. :D

      80sAudiSport thanks mate! Yeah the 268 is great for the engine, opens up the top end but still retains the low end grunt. Thats a good idea! It is something ive thought about doing :-)

      James Cope my sh!tbox just got the Jetex on last night, retro OZ cup type wheels found for £50, so just in need of getting my 268 cam in now together with head gasket and timing belt. It has a bit more lift than your Newman, but I'm more bound by the 268 duration due low comp engine... Will do so with light weight INA lifters, they're a steal!

    What steering setup are you on? If I get a 1.6 ryder will it be the same ratio ? Its non power assisted

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Stuart just standard GTI in terms of how short the rack is. Im not 100% but i think the 1.6 ryder has the same ratio rack. I think quaife make a short rack, but youll have a job finding one!

    Are you going to install aftermarket antiroll bars in the future?

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giorgos Maratheftis ive considered it but I dont think i will. A few friends have and had experienced a twitchy feel, especially on bumpy circuits. Im lucky in that I can adjust dampening and rebound on my coilovers, so if i need to simulate what and anti roll bar would do by making things softer/stiffer.

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cameron Hughes i know! Im trying to look for a method to future proof it. I thought it was a box oil issue and not being able to cope with heat, but apparently its just a common issue of “overshifting” and 020.

    • @cameronhughes1118
      @cameronhughes1118 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jimladvw yeah I think it is unfortunately... I haven't had it happen to mine yet (touch wood haha) but I've come across it on some of the forums and it could be a few things causing it. Have you had your box rebuilt at all?

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cameron Hughes no i havent. The same thing actually happened in germany a couple of years ago and i had to source and fit a new box on the guesthouse driveway 😂 ive been speaking to Martin at Gas n Gears who specialises in these boxes to see if theres any future proofing them. Hes said is down to worn selector rod and or a bad design. The other option is to switch to 02A/J cable change box. But ideally dont want to go down that route

      Yeah I saw the vid at the ring 😂From a Passat wasn't it? That's a bummer... No that's a bit of a pain. You don't want that extra weight either 😉 Anyway great to see another vid mate. Really makes me want to track mine this year!

  • @lowdl

    Loved this. It sounds like the engine wants more rpm on the tighter section of the track. Seems like a bit of an incline. The 8v does sound good.

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lorenzo Lakay yep exactly! Ive actually just purchased a 3A 2.0 bottom end, should give some good torque increase. May do some head work when the engines in bits, and lighten the flywheel 👍🏼 but i love the 8v!

    • @lowdl
      @lowdl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Cope That’s a good plan. 2l bottom end should give you a lot of low end grunt for sure. Especially with the 8v, they just make more torque low down as apposed to the 16v. Are you going to keep it 82.5mm pistons? Headwork while the bottom end is getting done is a good idea. Keep up the good work!

    • @Jimladvw
      @Jimladvw  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lorenzo Lakay yeah same pistons, see how it goes!

      Hiya James one of my home circuits (anglesey) what gearbox are you running on the car at the minute cos I'm running a 1983 mk 1 box strapped to a heavily ported 2.0 abf and running on a k jet injection pulling around 180bhp it goes quite well also if you are interested I've got a 8v engine with a heavily ported head running a 300 degree Kent cam on solid shimmer lifters being decompressed to take a small turbo but unfortunately I have not got a turbo for it as the abf engine came along and I have other cams etc +8v manifold or if you know anyone who's still playing around with 8v's anyway been watching your videos at different tracks keep up the good work excellent!!! 👌👍

      petey's car antics hiya mate thanks. Im running the standard 020 box. The shortest ratio box they did for a mk2. It will be getting rebuilt soon to prevent further failures. I think your mk1 box with be an 020 as well. Im all good for the engine thanks. Potentially going abf myself soon!

      Ekhwan Ahmed personally i would up the camber, to -2/-2.5. Even for a road car thats completely fine. Your toe out will help turn in as well, so thats good. Next up adjustable coilovers will definitely make a huge improvement!! 👍🏼
