- In this vid I share my cleaning process and how I preserve, enhance and protect my metal detecting finds. If you watched my two-part videos entitled ‘WHERE ROMANS TROD’ you will know that I made an exciting haul of U.K. Roman artefacts and coins, all made of copper alloy / bronze, dating from around the 1st century AD. (Note - i made a mistake with my pronunciation of the Emperor Antoninus Pius in this vid - sorry Antoninus, won’t happen again 😊)
As a beginner detectorist I’ve tried a few things including Renaissance Wax. I’ve been using Arteseal for a few months and I think it’s absolutely brilliant. The detail that comes to life when treasure is treated this way is SO COOL. Buckles, buttons, coins, artefacts - transformed and ready for a display cabinet! Watch my full review in this vid!

After watching a few videos on a fossil channel, which mentioned using Paraloid B72 dissolved in acetone, I gave it a try on some small fossils I have and then on a few bronze coins and lead farm tokens. It worked very well and I see Artseal is the same stuff, just pre-mixed to certain concentrations. A stronger solution can be used to glue fossil pieces back together so would be good to stabilise flaky coins. Nice to see how well it worked on your coins!
Brilliant! Yes I’d read it can be used on all sorts of materials from glass to stone, metal etc. British Museum use it so must be good!

As they are your finds you do as you please. I use Andres pencils just to tidy them up. I would never mess with a rare coin/token/relic but rather pay for professional conservation. Honestly most coin finds are environmentally damaged and value is impacted greatly so a decent clean changes nothing other than they can be displayed and viewed in better detail. I am checking in with an expert on every coin before I clean. The solution i'm using is used by British Museum for the past 20 years - so I feel ok with using it, but will always check if I find something really good someday!

Trapping any residual humidity into bronze coins and artefacts with a shiny chemical product can act against long term preservation.
Good point about the humidity - it’s really important these are truly dry. How one tells that is tricky to know. The product itself is conservation grade. But as I said at the start of in any doubt it’s best to do nothing at all. I’m happy to experiment on these items and really happy with the result .. so far!
@@miss_detectorist This company you promote will not be answerable for damages done to your present and future collection. Something you found does not shine enough? You will find another with a better patina someday.
@@miss_detectorist On the coins I've used Paraloid/Artseal on I have left them on a radiator for a few days first, to fully dry.

It is a great product but remember to do the edges of coins. The 20% solution is also great for unstable items.
Good point though thank you for mentioning it - I cut that out of the film, silly me. There was one particularly unstable coin, virtually flaky, perhaps I’ll try the 20% thanks for the tip!
Just came across your site tonight,i live in south Somerset,been detecting approx 25 years with Deus1 the past nine years.I absolutely love your videos,delighful and so imaginative(i looked through a half dozen)i particularly enjoy your research which is a great foundation for this intriguing hobby.I wish you and yours a happy and fulfilling 2024.I use benzotriazole for copper alloy artefacts,however,i think i may try Artseal for coins,thankyou.

Great! Look forward to hearing how you get on! I’m going to go through all my finds and see what could use a little bit of TLC! I did a buckle earlier and it came up an absolute treat.
@miss_detectorist be interesting to see how it goes I've always used wax and it doesn't always do a good job😊also I use natural spring water because I was told (but I may be wrong)that deionized has still got chemicals in it 😊 but that I said that could be wrong😊

Tap water - 250mg/l chlorides
Freshwater stream/river and lake - 1-100ppm depending on purity (equivalent to the same mg/l) a lot of rivers are of course contaminated by tap water/drain effluent
Deionised less than 70ppm
Rainwater 2-29 mg/l (this taken from data collected from rural Cornish rainwater - there’s a.report on the Gov.uk website and you can search the data by area)
I’d say - definitely avoid tap, deionised probably the most consistent and available lower chloride solution, rainwater not a bad option?

Love it. You get the true reveal of the details which all seem to disappear the minute the object dries out. Just need to suss out how to display these finds now!

Have you ever tried using a composite pencil? They really remove the crud & bring out the detail without damaging the coin. Don't use on gold or silver, but bronze coins are fine.
