- In 1876, German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, already renowned for his discovery of the real-world location of Troy, unearthed a remarkable artifact in a shaft tomb in Mycenae, Greece.
Among the trove of gold, weapons, and the remains of a wealthy man lay a striking gold funerary mask, crafted from a single sheet of hammered gold and rendered in three dimensions-a remarkably unique piece from an era when two-dimensional masks were far more common.
This "Mask of Agamemnon," as it would come to be known, sparked a tantalizing possibility: could this be the face of the legendary King Agamemnon, the prominent leader of the Achaeans in the Trojan War, whose exploits were immortalized in Homer's epic, the Iliad?
For centuries, the location of Agamemnon's final resting place has been a topic of heated debate. Some scholars dismiss the King as a purely mythological construct, while others maintain that the stories surrounding him are rooted in historical fact.
Overcome with excitement at his discovery, Schliemann reportedly sent a telegram to King George of Greece, proclaiming, "I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon."
The mask shared several consistencies with others found nearby, such as the presence of a beard and the artist's approach to facial features. However, the discovery raised more questions than it answered.
In the 20th century, the artifact's authenticity was formally challenged, with some critics even accusing Schliemann of commissioning the mask's creation and planting it in the tomb to bolster his reputation.
Modern archaeological methods have since revealed that the mask actually dates back to the 16th century BC, predating the Trojan War by several centuries. While this confirms the mask's authenticity and suggests it is even older than Schliemann initially believed, it also definitively proves that the artifact could not have belonged to the mythological King Agamemnon.
In his final years, Schliemann came to accept the truth about his discovery and the realization that Agamemnon may have been a figure of mythology all along.
The mask, described by one historian as the "Mona Lisa of prehistory," continues to captivate scholars, offering a glimpse into the rich craftsmanship of the ancient world, even if it cannot provide a tangible link to the mythical figure of Agamemnon himself...
Love that intro... Lol makes me smile every time
I too appreciate the beepity boops!
Get help
Just because the mask is older than Agamemnon doesn't mean he couldn't have come into ownership of said mask
Yes it does
If it was in a tomb that predates the believed time of Agamemnon the. It definitely means he couldn't have had it at any point.
Exactly.
it was found at a deeper layer, so... it exactly means he didn't own it. Do you think they dated the gold? lmao!!!
Why are people these days so stupid?? Christ 🤦🏻♂️
Always love the content. No evidence to back up the claims, no real reasoning, just pure speculation and enjoyment. Love it dude, please keep it up
We (man) are the ones that decided Neanderthals were primitive in mind without having absolute proof of it. I think we assUme that ancient and intelligent couldnt possibly go together.
That is not true we think neanderthals were very intelligent and capable! Look at real resech, not just youtube nonsense!
Love all your Dark Channels
Thank you!
#partoftheproblem.. imagine supporting someone that has atleast 15 channels
I appreciate how Dark5 gets right to it. No long needless intro, "Throughout history there have been mysterious ancient masks! Some for religious purposes, some for ceremonial purposes...etc for like three minutes." Thanks guys.
"Skeptics remain unconvinced" is Dark 5 speak for 'Completely made up nonsense with zero basis in fact'.
enjoy your free entertainment lmao
Often quite the opposite. Archaeologists I'' have known in real life have been very competitive, dismissing the research of any and all colleagues simply because they don't want the funding, glory and promotion to go to someone else.
They will also never deviate from the accepted norm out of fear of being seen as an amateur, so nonsense assumptions made 150 years ago but accepted as "truth" never get challenged, even when there is ample evidence to do do so.
A dark 5 : Accepted truths of archaeology overturned by compelling evidence. OR something to that effect.
What do you think the word conspiracy means? I bet you are wrong.
And this clown has around 15 channels he’s doing it with that’s the worst part
Great channel
I had come across a study done on crystal axe blades found in Chinese burial site. Composed of micron grains forged together (unknown process) of diaspore mulcasute and corundum…
I never seen any further information on this study or the objects.
They were so polished as to be a perfect mirror, so ancient nothing else remained except the gem axe blades them selves. I haven’t found the study again since…
Excellent video D5 👍👍
Best Dark channel 👍
Watching at work 😊
The boss makes a dollar,

Boss thinks I'm working
But I'm watching Dark 5.
I'm watching whilst laying my daily clutch of cranky poultry eggs 🐓
Must b3 American
The dear masks are absolutely fascinating, really all of them are ! Dark 5 never fails to consistently showcase quality content ! The one found in a French cave more likely had religious connotations, an extremely early representation of a god or idol. Very cool 👍🏼😎
A great mystery I'd like to see you get into, is how one one end of a paragraph people were cave dwellers who barely just lost their tails, but on the other end we are finding super advanced understanding with metals and building, and ability. Stop holding on to theory's that keep being proven wrong, over and over, and stick with facts. You'll get farther faster.
Thrilled for Max.❤
My son lives in Melbourne & he goes metal detecting on the beach whenever he can. 2 days ago he seng me pics of some coins & a necklace he found. He always mentions the treasure ships.
⛵If the markings could be deciphered Iridium is used in circuits. Might be something there worth looking at if there was more access to the lost ships. ⛵
The deer skull 🦌💀 masks were used in war or raids on villages, to terrify their opponents/victims, that's why they are in one place in different areas, that's where they fell. That's MY theory, and I'm sticking to it...😊
The first mask looks like Shakespeare to me!
It's the Pumaman!
2 dimentional mask?? How does that work!!
Homer spoke of Achilles and other "gods" and "demigods" as if they had actual physical effects on the battlefield. This either speaks of nephilim from a time forgotten or complete bullshit... I highly doubt this was recorded for posterity if it was just smoke and hokem.
Schliemann's name is pronounced Shleemann, not Shlaymann (that would be spelled "Schleimann")
They should just call him "The guy who ruined archeological sites with explosives."
I love reading the comments and seeing no one thinking its a race.the only thing participants win anyway is an award for having no life.
Is this just a reupload?
I don't think so, but some of the mask are mentioned in other videos.
5...
There a re theories that the Maya moved up into Nth America and settled in the Miami area. Maya Mi.
So to be an archeologist you need a trowel & a theory. Got it
same the voice is so weird like a freaked-out lunatic can't even bear to watch it
SLEEEman.
3:45 - What's up with those feet? It that some protohuman?
From the appearance of the rest of the drawing, proportion and perspective by the artist were poor.
Dude has some eagle claws.
Im sitting on the pot with a wicked case of diarrhingus
Mythology is real all of it. The invention of stories is a very new thing. It's a modern thing. Ancients didn't do that.
How do you know?
@@thokim84 the first novel ever written was Wuthering Heights.
@@thokim84 mythology is just history carried by people who never saw it and told to people who cant imagine it. And we are only just having the technology and science to decode what those stories might have been referring to. But discarding it as fantasy is not only silly it's dangerous. There could be stuff we really need to know.
you butchered max schliemann's name.
Huh, seems the "simple, primitive man" is just as, if not more, unaware of themself today. The one thinking he knows, but certainly does not know.
The oldest/earliest depictions of evil. Do with that what you will.
Run out of content I take it???
Ancient Peru dark and evil.
The gold one looks like Vladimir putin
Can you make your intro like 10x longer…need more boop dee boop boop beep
I wonder why no African mask made it to this video
I'm sure if he came across one he would've put it in the video... not sure what you're trying to say.
The Trojan War is actually 100% a work of mythology. It never happened.
Yes but the chicken trojans are real! I fought with them during the pullet paravalium wars
Just like the city of Troy??🤔
Lol Johnathan Frakes, how ya been man?
Explain to me why it is so important to change from BC to BCE, and AD to CE?! Why do people feel the need to change this? I know, I know! Because of religious beliefs! All it does is make me aggravated as to which era something actually happened! Just stop it already!
Ree harder!
And we skipped the use of "D"......
How about the mystery of the current leftist ideology. The curse of the " They/Them "😂😂
