I literally just watched this entire series in two days lol obsessed with DST now. Had vanilla on PS4 but downloaded it on steam cause I have my PC working from home. Awesome man. I started a world with Maxwell and TH-camd DST Maxwell tips and it took me here. And by god did I get some tips 😆
That near death situation is basically a typical sight when fighting bosses as Maxwell. Since this video series started you inspired me to try a new game as Maxwell, a character that I only glanced over in DS after freeing him from captivity. I gotta say, I came to enjoy playing as him very much. BUT, the boss fights require much more preparation, focus and discipline than when playing as, say, Wigfrid. You have to chug those pierogi like there's no tomorrow after just a couple of hits. Most notably, Dragonfly would burn me through several log armors and half a stack of pierogi before I practiced enough to kite her more or less reliably. The Bee Queen requires almost a stack of them, since you pretty much have to tank her while her minions are occupied with the maze. And then there are those damn Shadow pieces. My god, the number of times I rerolled the game after pointlessly trying to kite them with just the cane and magiluminescence. Turns out, that 0.125 difference in speed (cane x magi = 1.5; cane x road = 1.625) is crucial. I didn't try to save the Bishop for last, but I wonder if stacking all of them for a 1.95 boost would be enough to kite him completely. Could always check myself, but in case you still need ideas for new video tutorials, how's that for one? ;)
Yeah, I've tried that 1.95 before with the magiluminescence, cane and roads. The lvl 3 bishop would still hit me twice and I couldn't kite a lvl 3 knight. I haven't tried it yet though with Wolfgang's mighty form or with WX's system overload.
Marciliy: yea maxwell is a fun character to play and is my 2nd most favourite character after wigfred. He is the first character i learnt to play after i learnt the basics with wilson, and im also inspired to play him again. I like how easy you can gather a lot of recources fast, plus the sanity boost whilst in caves etc as a noob was desirable. He taught me the necessity of learning to kite well and play cautiously. Playing with maxwell leaves very little margin for error, and not wearing armour at times can often mean instant death. Even tho he still does 100% damage i enjoy the challenge of only having 75hp in boss fights etc. I nearly died fighting dragonfly wi a friend wearing marble suit armour after it enraged and stomped me. Funny enough learning to play maxwell has made me a much better wigfred player. A lot of players noobishly tank a lot wi wigfred simply bc she is tough and can easily make armour and a decent weapon. Learning to kite means u almost always have full health with wigfred as she get health from fighting. I rarely ever die bc im used to using maxwell. Boss fights r not to bad with maxwell but def require a little more prep and maybe extra armour like football helmut plus log suit. I started to get frustrated with hound attacks when i least expected them with maxwell and stopped playing him. I neglected to make a tooth trap area and found at day 200+ hounds r not so easy to deal with for maxwell expecially when there are fire hounds and u dont want to lose recources like beehives and reeds. Im also inspired to play maxwell again. Im impressed how helicalpuma easily deals with the hounds attacks every time. Im a better player now and will probably better deal with unexpected hound attacks. Maybe i jus need to focus on making a tooth trap area earlier in the game. I have a small tooth trap area in my wigfred game but never use it as im not a big fan of tooth traps.
shane jett Speaking of unforgiving bosses. When I first found the Ancient Guardian in my Maxwell world, I thought, "ok, let me try to kill him legit". I barely entered his arena and was looking for a place to leave my backpack not too close to the spiders, so I haven't put my armor on yet. I only had a miner hat at the time, so I didn't see him coming as he killed me in one hit. I used the only amulet I had on me to resurrect myself and decided "Nah, screw that". So I hid in a corner where he couldn't get to me and just smashed him till he was dead. Cheesing never felt so justified to me. :) For hound attacks that you don't want to deal with, better jump into a cave as soon as you hear them growl. On a public server you can just leave and come back after a minute or two, so that only those players that stayed would have to deal with them. Having a trap area is not always a problem solver either. For example a hound attack might start when you are far away from base. Speaking of which, I feel like hound attacks give you a sense of being grounded at your base. Like, when you need to go to a different biome to gather resources or whatnot, but you're not sure if now is the right time, because the last hound wave was almost ten days ago, so they might strike at any moment. I don't know what are the implications of hound waves from a game designer's stand point (apart from punishing the player just for lulz), but I feel that they are rather irritating at first and later become just a chore. Personally, I don't think the devs themselves really know or care how one player is supposed to deal with a wave of 10+ hound on their own, without resorting to cheesy tactics like beefalo, tentacles, tooth traps and so on. Their AI, animations and movement speed are just not meant for a fair fight (when they are in a pack, at least). Therefore, to keep this little challenge, but make it less of a nuisance, for the last year or two I prefer fo turn down the hound waves to Less in Word Gen options. Still, even when I'm alone on my server I get 10 or so hounds after day 100, it just happens less often and the warning time seems to always be the same.
Marciliy: yea its difficult to see whats going on in ruins without moogles. I have heard clockworks close by but not found them until later when i came back with moogles. Its very easy to die with maxwell. I rarely go into swamps early game at night wi maxwell without armour. Yea first time i found ancient guardian i tried kitting him with no success. I also wanted to kill him legit but gave up as i was too inexperienced and completely unprepared. I tried to cheese him by getting him stuck but for some reason he was still able to hit me. Every time i attacked he was able to hit me. I ended up killing him with 3 rock lobsters easily. Yea i dont mind hiding in the caves when hounds come when i dont want or am not prepared to fight hounds but quitting the server is pretty cheesy. Oh but now i remember i did that recently using maxwell on a friends server bc i didn't want to lose my minions. I dont mind fighting a bit wi maxwell but it really cheeses me off when the hounds kill my minions. Kitting hounds is the best way to get ur minions killed unfortunately. So the first few hound attacks i kite very little n mostly tank as nighmare fuel is usually more valuable to me than armour and health. Yea u cant spend all ur time at base thinking the hounds are comming soon. There are videos that show u can kite many hounds using a road n walking cane but its not easy. I will kite 2 or 3 hounds but more than that becomes a bit ridiculous unless ur last names "kite" n u have very little lag.
Helicalpuma: completely unrelated; why doesn't the bee queen crown raise sanity when fighting toadstool. Fighting toadstool drains a lot of sanity, but im not sure if its toad or his spores etc that actually drain sanity. The wiki doesn't say anything about a insanity aura , however i thought the wiki said he did drain sanity when i read it a few months ago. I dont use the bee queen crown as i find it rarely useful and a waste of inventory space. I thought it would be a great choice for toadstool fight but apparently its nearly exactly the same as a battle helm.
I absolutely love this series. No offense to Edgy Rick love the guys, but your videos are way better composed with all the boring bits skipped over while the amazing DST soundtrack is played. There is always something to learn from your videos and you explain them really well with onscreen visuals included. I really hope that you keep up the video quality in the future, and pray that Misery Toadstool won't rip you apart when you eventually fight him right? I guess I would like to see Toadstool and Misery Toadstool's drops changed into something more significant. Maybe Misery Toadstool drops a kind of turf where disease cannot happen hehe. I played the RoG Don't Starve for a short time as Wilson and stopped playing when I finished the adventure mode. I haven't played Shipwrecked yet. I played Wolfgang and Wickerbottom longer than I've played Wigfrid. I haven't played Woodie that much and I played everyone else (including Winona) for about as long as I've played Maxwell. Deerclops I guess. I kinda like Maxwell the way it is right now. Maybe they could improve the shadow duelists.
Thanks for making these videos, I have learned a lot. But I have a couple of questions, I made a base really close to a silkhole and it's open(the bats are not that dangerous, but I made a gekko farm close). If I make a Houndius Shootius, would that kill the bats? And another question, there is a way to make a Splumonkey farm? with Rabbits or Rock Lobsters?
The houndius won't auto target the bats unless they attack you or you attack them. Rabbit hutches are much better for bats. I've made a splumonkey/nightmare fuel farm before by walling them in with bunnymen. Rock lobsters should work too.
It's hard to make good use of it unless you have a lot of them. There is a way to use a lot of them against bee queen. But with just 1 or 2, I use it to help me when I farm volt goats.
He has to enable the "Show Tile" feature for geometric placement through the mod menu via the main screen of the game. Enabling the feature of the mod will show the tile outline when placing a structure, regardless of whether or not the tile has been dug up. Edit: The pitchfork is then not needed to see the tile's center.
Hi! I really like your Maxwell play through series and all of your other videos! I have a question and this might not be relevant to this episode: I remember you saying you like twiggy tree farm better since they don't get diseases. I tried that method in my servers but they don't seem to be quite efficient. I had like 40 trees planted next t o each other but they don't drop many twigs. Is there anything I could do to increase their efficiency or did I plant them too closely? Please tell me what you did, thanks!
I'm not sure if planting them very close to each other affects the amount they drop. I just don't plant them that way because I don't like the way it looks. But no matter how I plant them, they will not be able to give as much as an equivalent sapling farm. I prefer twiggy trees because of their low maintenance, not because of high production. The smaller amount that they produce is about all I use anyway.
Helicalpuma Thanks for helping! I guess I'll do more experiments on that. The server I just started somehow has no sapling at all and my twiggy tree farm only gave me no more than 5 twigs so far. It's been 40 days and I still haven't get any more twigs from them. I'll try to plant them with gaps and hope they work well.
Hey! I have finally tried to plant the twiggy trees in different ways. It turns out to be great now: I have more than enough twigs dropping from them and they produce twigs quite often. I now plant them in rolls and I left several space between each roll. From my experience, it seems that they need some space to drop the twigs and they will stop dropping if there is no space around. It has been always the case for me although there's one time I have like 40 twiggy trees planted densely and they yielded tons of twigs for only once. Interestingly, the twigs yielded were only at the outer ring of the little forest I planted and none of them were in the forest. Seems like all twigs are pushed out to the only empty space around the forest. After that time, the forest still yield some twigs but again, they only yield a very small amount and only around the forest, which may prove my point of they need space to drop the twigs.
One more thing lol, I have watched all of your videos and learned a lot from them. I made a volt goat pan base on your tutorial and it works well. I noticed your no-eye deer pan and I found it really cool. Could you please tell me or make a video of how you did that? Do the deers reproduce if I killed some? Do you have to push them slowly to the pan as you did to the volt goats in order to change their home location and make them able to reproduce and grow antlers? Looking forward to see your reply and more awesome videos!
Is it possible use the bee queen in this battle? Just started playing DST a month ago and there are still a lot of the game mechanics that I don't understand, but this play through has been very informative for me. :D

Pierogi are easier and faster to make if you have rabbit hutches. If I have something like 10 meat, 10 monster meat and 20 carrots, and I wanted to cook 10 pierogi, I would give the 10 meat to the bird for the eggs. It's just faster that way. The difference is I would have to cook the monster meat first if I wanted to give that to the bird for eggs.
Nice video and explanations as always. I just want to ask you something and I don't know if you mentioned it in your videos : I'm hosting a server and I have a lot of problems with my frame rate which is very low. Do you have any solutions for that since I noticed you don't seem to have problems with that. Btw i have a good computer and I'm not using the Minimap mod. Thx in advance :)
I sometimes have frame rate problems in worlds where I've built a lot of stuff, particularly if there are a lot of individual items or mobs in one area. I also have frame rate problems if I try to increase my recording software's output quality beyond what my cpu can handle smoothly. Other than that, if it's not the computer, I'm not sure what might be causing it for you.
Are you playing with lag compensation on or off? I noticed some of your hits weren't getting in with your fight with Deerclops, a problem I have if lag compensation is on.
I play with the lag compensation on (predictive) when I play on my own worlds or when I play on servers where my ping is low. It's not ideal, but I've gotten used to it. It's kinda fun switching it off when I'm playing with high ping. It makes the game feel very different.
Maaan... I miss the times, when Don't Starve was really new and had no DLC. I didn't know anything about it and it was really fun. My brother played it, then me (he still played it). It was awesome. Now it's like "meh, ok... Where do I want to set up the base? " "Ergh.. Gathering resources is so boring..." "Eh. You again? You are just wasting my time stupid hounds" "Man... Idk what to do... I did everything on this world..."

But I have a couple of questions, I made a base really close to a silkhole and it's open(the bats are not that dangerous, but I made a gekko farm close). If I make a Houndius Shootius, would that kill the bats?
And another question, there is a way to make a Splumonkey farm? with Rabbits or Rock Lobsters?
The houndius won't auto target the bats unless they attack you or you attack them. Rabbit hutches are much better for bats.
I've made a splumonkey/nightmare fuel farm before by walling them in with bunnymen. Rock lobsters should work too.

It's hard to make good use of it unless you have a lot of them. There is a way to use a lot of them against bee queen. But with just 1 or 2, I use it to help me when I farm volt goats.

If you have the geometry placement mod then you can see the centre of a tile with a pitchfork
The grid only shows if there is a tile to begin with. Since he dug them all up, he had to replant some to see the center.
He has to enable the "Show Tile" feature for geometric placement through the mod menu via the main screen of the game. Enabling the feature of the mod will show the tile outline when placing a structure, regardless of whether or not the tile has been dug up.

Hi! I really like your Maxwell play through series and all of your other videos! I have a question and this might not be relevant to this episode: I remember you saying you like twiggy tree farm better since they don't get diseases. I tried that method in my servers but they don't seem to be quite efficient. I had like 40 trees planted next t o each other but they don't drop many twigs. Is there anything I could do to increase their efficiency or did I plant them too closely? Please tell me what you did, thanks!
I'm not sure if planting them very close to each other affects the amount they drop. I just don't plant them that way because I don't like the way it looks. But no matter how I plant them, they will not be able to give as much as an equivalent sapling farm. I prefer twiggy trees because of their low maintenance, not because of high production. The smaller amount that they produce is about all I use anyway.
Helicalpuma Thanks for helping! I guess I'll do more experiments on that. The server I just started somehow has no sapling at all and my twiggy tree farm only gave me no more than 5 twigs so far. It's been 40 days and I still haven't get any more twigs from them. I'll try to plant them with gaps and hope they work well.
Hey! I have finally tried to plant the twiggy trees in different ways. It turns out to be great now: I have more than enough twigs dropping from them and they produce twigs quite often. I now plant them in rolls and I left several space between each roll. From my experience, it seems that they need some space to drop the twigs and they will stop dropping if there is no space around. It has been always the case for me although there's one time I have like 40 twiggy trees planted densely and they yielded tons of twigs for only once. Interestingly, the twigs yielded were only at the outer ring of the little forest I planted and none of them were in the forest. Seems like all twigs are pushed out to the only empty space around the forest. After that time, the forest still yield some twigs but again, they only yield a very small amount and only around the forest, which may prove my point of they need space to drop the twigs.
One more thing lol, I have watched all of your videos and learned a lot from them. I made a volt goat pan base on your tutorial and it works well. I noticed your no-eye deer pan and I found it really cool. Could you please tell me or make a video of how you did that? Do the deers reproduce if I killed some? Do you have to push them slowly to the pan as you did to the volt goats in order to change their home location and make them able to reproduce and grow antlers? Looking forward to see your reply and more awesome videos!

Pierogi are easier and faster to make if you have rabbit hutches.
If I have something like 10 meat, 10 monster meat and 20 carrots, and I wanted to cook 10 pierogi, I would give the 10 meat to the bird for the eggs. It's just faster that way. The difference is I would have to cook the monster meat first if I wanted to give that to the bird for eggs.

I just want to ask you something and I don't know if you mentioned it in your videos : I'm hosting a server and I have a lot of problems with my frame rate which is very low. Do you have any solutions for that since I noticed you don't seem to have problems with that.
Btw i have a good computer and I'm not using the Minimap mod.

I sometimes have frame rate problems in worlds where I've built a lot of stuff, particularly if there are a lot of individual items or mobs in one area. I also have frame rate problems if I try to increase my recording software's output quality beyond what my cpu can handle smoothly. Other than that, if it's not the computer, I'm not sure what might be causing it for you.

Are you playing with lag compensation on or off? I noticed some of your hits weren't getting in with your fight with Deerclops, a problem I have if lag compensation is on.
I play with the lag compensation on (predictive) when I play on my own worlds or when I play on servers where my ping is low. It's not ideal, but I've gotten used to it. It's kinda fun switching it off when I'm playing with high ping. It makes the game feel very different.
