  • The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa. This Big 5 reserve is located in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa and offers amazing safari experiences.
This park has done some remarkable conservation work and saved the White Rhinos from extinction when less than 100 Rhinos remained in the wild in the '60s.
Today the Game Reserve has one of the densest populations of Rhinos in Africa and is the genetic home to every White Rhino population in the world.
But you will find a lot more than just Rhinos there. You will encounter Lions, Hyenas, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Cheetahs, Elephants, Buffaloes, Hippos and so much more.
There is a variety of accommodation available, in the southern iMfolozi section, as well as in the northern part of Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

Thank you so much! I really love this park. It feels a bit more raw, adventurous and less touristy than other places like Addo or Kruger

Excellent video and super park. What exactly period were you in Addo and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi? I'm considering a visit in February 2025.

Thank you so much! We went to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi in winter (end of June) and it was perfect. We got great and easy sightings back then, because the bush is less dense. We also visited the same park in summer later that year again (December), but it was a bit more difficult to drive, because many roads were closed or very slippery due to heavy rains. Additionally, the animals are less likely to be seen than in winter. But you get more baby animals in summer (December to February). And I personally like the appearance of the lush greenery of the bush in summer a bit more. So there is not really one good or one bad season to visit, they are just different.

For Addo it doesn't really matter when you visit, the sightings will be quite similar (we went there multiple times in winter, spring and summer). In winter, there are fewer tourists and you get more intimate encounters, but it gets cold. In summer, the chances are better to see elephants at the waterholes, because they take baths. But the difference is not as big as in the northern parks, like Hluhluwe-Imfolozi or Kruger. I hope that helps!
