I started my Roth IRA when I was seventeen. A kid hit me with his car in the high school parking lot, and my parents paid for my hospital bills. When his insurance finally came and paid us, my parents let me invest the money in a Roth! I was pretty happy about that, although I was very upset about having a broken leg as a senior in high school.

I was so excited when I saw Clark Howard on the thumbnail of this a few days ago as an "upcoming" video. Clark is one of my all time favorite financial personalities. I was at work at a school when it aired though, and had planned on watching when I got home. Couldn't even make it that far... I started listening on the drive home from work!!! SUCH a great crossover event.

I do have to rebuttal that you can go to college and graduate debt free paying for it on your own. My tuition in state was $50k after being their for 4 years. I spent a year at community and did dual credit in hs. I got a $1200 scholarship for community, and $500 scholarship for all my semesters at ASU. Working minimum wage jobs I made $20k a year for the 5 years of school I did =100k -50k tuition (rounded up) leaves $50k for living. I also interned 2/5 years and made $20-30 an hour and interned year round. You can totally still graduate debt free on your own.

So much of this made me laugh, from the Corvette to the credit card rewards, term life and TV options as it's all so familiar. I always said I was going to buy a Corvette when I "made it" but now in my early 50's I really don't have a use or desire for one and if I did I'd go with a used C5 for about $20k with 50k miles on it. Nice for cruising around once in a while but not really good for much else. Besides, I still really like my 2006 GMC pickup and it's pretty hard to load plywood in a Corvette much less drive the washboard roads of the Midwest.
I live a very different life than one of frequent travel so we chose 2 cash back cards that give us 1% on everything and 5% on quarterly rotating categories. This gives us 5% cash back on groceries and gasoline (which is the bulk of our annual spending) for half the year with no annual fee and other categories are things like Home Depot, warehouse clubs, pharmacies and Amazon which works extremely well for us. Incidentally, not only is Amazon frequently overpriced but so is Walmart as we do far better with sale prices at other stores.
We've got a few years left on our term life but we've outgrown it and won't be replacing them at higher prices but they served us well and at a decent price.
I could write a book about free content...I cut the cord in 2008 and never looked back after installing a rooftop antenna with digital converter boxes for our tube TVs initially and built a home theater PC with Ubuntu to record 4 channels at once. Now with 4K TVs and tons of free streaming options along with the antenna and our library cards it's the new golden age of free TV and home entertainment. Nothing beats the clarity of OTA broadcast TV, it's incredible.
These days we're more interested in simplifying and making our lives easier which oddly enough is always the less expensive option. I vastly prefer the satisfaction of cooking fantastic meals at home that beat even the finest restaurants and at 1/4 of the cost of dining out. Everything is always perfectly done and far more relaxing at home. Forget the Jaguars, BMWs, Mercedes and fussy foreign sports cars that are overpriced and require frequent, expensive repairs when a Toyota, Honda or Subaru offer years of trouble free service with little more than oil changes, tire rotations/replacement and brakes. Electric cars may be nice in the city but not so much for those of us in more rural areas and good luck driving one on vacation to an even more remote locale such as the North Woods for fishing.
I completed and filed our income taxes last week and once again we had far more than we needed throughout the year, made a pretty nice Roth conversion, contributed mostly to our Roths while completely eliminating our income tax liability and saving more than ever before. Frankly, even I'm beginning to wonder how we do it each and every year as it seems almost unbelievable, especially considering how much everyone is complaining about inflation. Honestly, it's almost laughable...I've got our Easter dinner covered with a half bone-in ham for 79 cents/lb, cheesy potatoes from scratch, salad and asparagus is just $1.49/lb this week. I'm still deciding on dessert, I'm thinking something lemon such as cake, pie or maybe sorbet all from scratch and for just a few dollars. The "Good Life" just keeps getting better while being so inexpensive it's available to all...Cheers!

Clark - the anxiety is so true. I am a tightwad and an investor and saver but my ex wife was a spendoholic (not a shopoholic because she just spent regardless if she bought anything tangible) and I had anxiety just going to get gas. Now that I’ve been divorced for 8 years, I own 3 homes (2 rentals), built my IRA back up, got a job with a pension, my current wife has a great 401k and bonus situation, I have 2 brokerage accounts, some crowd funding that have paid dividends and an emergency fund and I have very little anxiety - if a car repair comes up or some other expense, I don’t stress at all!

Friendly feedback: The mics have some echo or something that makes listening on the new set harder. I’m not sure what the cause is.
I’m not an audio expert, but I also think maybe the low frequencies are turned up too high or some other processing that’s making the voices harder to make out.

I think that if you’re taking out a student loan, you should only be allowed to go to middle to lower type universities - no USC’s or Stanford’s, etc. I went to Eastern Washington U. My kids went to Chico State and Cal State Northridge and they are doing fine and have good jobs. I make a good 6 figure income. Also, the money should go straight to the University for tuition, books and housing and you get an EBT card for food and clothes.
