- When the plague hit the village of Eyam,a public meeting was held at which it was pointed out that if everyone fled the village to save themselves then the plague would spread to the surrounding area and possibly to the entire country. Although no fence kept them in the people regarded it as there Christian duty not to leave, so they stayed, and hundreds of them died
"Never has so much been owed to so few by so many" Churchill on the Battle of Britain
But this is just as appropriate here
Please everyone.....if you can, visit Eyam
They deserve to be remembered for their courage and sacrifice was just as noble
If only the village could be nominated for a posthumous award
I wonder how many of us would be here if not for them
They walled themselves in with death, to save strangers
I wish I could tell them that they actually won
At a terrible cost, they beat the Black Death
They stopped it
God bless you Eyam
Thank you for my life
One of the things that jumps out at me is that they put the coins they used to pay for provisions in vinegar so they would not spread the contagion. That shows more knowledge of disease than I was aware of from that time.
This November, when we remember the ultimate sacrifice our fighting men and women made
Please remember the sacrifice made by Eyam
It was every bit as brave, and as noble, but far fewer people are aware of it
Many of us wouldn't be here if not for them
I couldn't have done what they did
Has anyone read "A Year Of Wonders"? It's amazing, a small novel of the Plague in Eyam... Besides some names being different, it is still very well detailed.
I adore that book. It brought me here, though I've read it many times in the ten+ years I've owned it.
My 8th Great Grandfather Francis Bradshaw built and lived in Bradshaw Hall with his wife Ann (Stafford). Many of my ancestors are buried in Eyam Church - Bradshaws and Staffords. Their wealth did not filter down our branch but I do have a piece of the dilapidated building in my hearth!
Really excellent historical information well told. The area is very beautiful too. Cheers!
ngl this vid is helping me with school work in the corona pandemic so thank you
Same
Informative, interesting, sensitive and moving. Thanks so much. We're visiting tomorrow.
Thank you for your incredible film. I found it fascinating.
Very informative! Great video!
Very nice video Mr 10leggo. I visited Eyam a few years back. A very interesting place, especially the boundary stone!
Watching this now that they are starting to lock down my area during the Coronavirus.
We performed this play in Eyam church when l was at college. There was only one way to get from one entrance to the other, through the graveyard. Ok at the beginning, but as more people 'died' and repaired to the nearby pub, there were fewer and fewer of us until l was the only only left alive. The torch we used had been taken to the pub, which meant l had to stumble through the graveyard with the graves in the pitch black. My character had one line 'they're all dead', right at the end of the play. I was supposed to be mad by that time. After the ramble through the graveyard, past Mrs Mompsson's tomb, it wasn't much of a stretch. I had to run through the grsveyard to warn the dead characters to drink up and come for the 'curtain call' first, then run back to deliver my one line, by which time l was pretty much mad as a sack of frogs. Terrifying.
Not sure what to say. Thank you for making this.
combustication07 I live here
an excellent documentary on this historic occasion
many years ago i went into a cave/pothole somewhere in eyam.i have no idea where it was in the village, but would love to visit again, especially now i have learnt about its history
Thanks, great job
Bless their souls they buried their neighbours.
Risking their own families lives.
And fighting their instincts to flee, even if it killed the whole village, sacrificing so they wouldn’t infect all the souls in surrounding villages.Heroes! R.I.P
Very sad, but thankyou very much. I have just finished a book about The Great Plague and I am interested in any documentary on the subject. Well done.
extremely moving and warm hearted
I'm reading a book about this plague as an assignment. It's incredible how brave these people were in the face of this disaster; they didn't deserve the fate that befell them :/ It'd be so interesting to go to Eyam and see all that happened there.
Whatzit Toya There is definitely an atmosphere there even today. I go regularly.
I went last week, I lit a candle in the church for I loved and let, but also for the villagers. They were heroes.
It's just a shame they have never got some kind of medal for what they did.
They need to make sure big budget TV series about it.
The world need to know what need people did.
Beautiful area with a sad history. Worth the visit. I found it very interesting.
The BBC1 did a play , probably in the 1970s, about Eyam during the plague and it’s a place I have never forgotten.
Brendan Hayes they did, it's called "The Roses of Eyam" came out in 1973 and you can watch it on TH-cam if you search for it, very well done and touching.
Fascinating story of self sacrifice

They were sons of Edward and Mary Cooper. Edward Cooper Jr. died on September 22, 1665 and became the second victim of the plague. Jonathan Cooper died on October 28 the same year.

Hi History Class - 8y 👋
What happen to rowland and emmot? I thought emmot died due to the plague! I have the book here! I just wanna watch the video,Pls make it clearly! =(
Emmott did die on the 29th April 1666.
One day Rowland went to Cucklet delph (where him and Emmot met) And she never showed up. When the village quarentine was over Rowland found out that Emmot had died on 29th April 1666.
Emmott and most of her family died within three, maybe four months. And only her baby brother Joseph survived

It seems the plague germ could travel by air as well as by fleas.
It can sometimes. Plague has three forms, varying with the means of infection. Ordinarily, it is spread through the botes of infected fleas. However should the infection get into the lungs, the bacteria can be spread on droplets from the patient who is coughing.
They can also spread via lice, human clears, and other methods such as described above many people only view the fleas and the rats but they actually played a much more minor role than we ever realized compared to all the vectors adapted to humans and humans in general
History work anyone
I got science work :(
