- No words can adequately describe this review... Night Gyr, Arctic Cheetah, Linebacker, Black Lanner and the infamous Battle Cobra. Definitely an eclectic bunch of omnimechs, but some really great designs that you'll want to get your hands on sooner rather than later!

The Night Gyr is a summoner on steroids. Slower, but damn it is scary.
And the Battle Cobra is probably my favourite clan omnimech. It's a very unique-looking mech. And while it had to live in the shadow of the Stormcrow, prime, and A configs are great, and great bv-wise too.
The Night Gyr will now forever be relegated to the ranks of cattle. Great unboxing!

Should do some Battlytics on 1v1s for different chassis. Timber Wolf Prime versus Linebacker Prime, Shadow Cat vs Ice Ferret, etc. See if these "replacement mechs" actually do their job.
This Black Lanner looks much nicer than my old Ral Partha version. Even unpainted, it's lean and elegant, and it evokes the bird of prey aesthetic much better than the classic Black Lanner which... I'm gonna say it, is a little stubby. The old Black Lanner looks almost adorable, which is not a word you usually associate with Clan Omnis.
Yeah, the original Black Lanner looked almost like some sort of chibified Stalker.

Remember this is sometimes a second line star, so TAG is used on occasion, especially if the have the guided LRMs, and they no longer give a shit about dueling for most IS force so article is a possibility
Night Gyr - D = I was blown away when I noticed this mech in the opfor in BT BEX....

When the Inner Sphere surats hear the name Night Gyr, they think of silly noctournal Indonesian bovines.. But, some clanners remember losing entire swaths of sibkin forced to fight for their lives against the 10 thousand Kg., genetically bred moonstrosity... the Night Gyr! MOOOOOOORAAAAWWR!!!!!

Night Gyr in this context is referring to the gyrfalcon (which also get calls a gyr, just to be confusing), at least that's how I see it. However, 'night cow' is just damn funny.
Linebacker was named by Natasha Kerensky and Phelan Kell. so football is apt.
-Night Gyr C is Nasty! big beams and UAC2's plus a TarComp.
-Arctic Cheetah was made by people who knew spheroid war. so they anticipated the Sphere throwing out RoE.
This is one of my favorite packs because it has a full assortment of some of the weirdest looking Clan mechs of the 3058 era ones. And all of them really captured the essence of the artwork in the new sculpts. All of them look newer and better but look just like their original artworks! The Night Gyr was known for being the first mech with laser heat sinks instead of normal double heat sinks. Though it was retrofitted to have double heat sinks in the field by Jade Falcon mechwarriors because of the difficulties in supply caused by having a unique type of heat sink. Apparently a laser heat sink Night Gyr would literally glow in the dark when it was running hot. Maybe you should do a comparo of the Night Gyr vs one of the Timber Wolf variants or some other comparable heavy like the Nova Cat, whose design was inspired by the Night Gyr.

Most of the Clan Mechs have names relating to the clan who made them or how they look. I do say most cause there are some that seem to come from left field.
The Cougar to name a well-known exception to this rule. Named after the cougar's all over North and South America but made by Clan Jade Falcon.
Night Gyr and Black Lanner designed by Clan Jade Falcon hense the Gyr and Lanner names.
The Battle Cobra was designed by Clan Steel Viper, Viper and Cobra is the link here.

The linebacker gets its name from its hunched appearance, like a linebacker in American football. It's one of the random ones. It was designed by Clan Wolf.
I blame you guys for having spent the last half hour watching falconry videos! I'm into birds but we don't have hierofalcons in California. They're the subgenus of falcons that include the lanner and gyrfalcon, which are mostly large falcons with hawk-like plumage. The gyrfalcon is the biggest falcon of all, and is apparently challenging to hunt with because they're independent-minded. It's an Arctic species and European nobility used to pay people to go to Greenland to catch them one. It's "jeer-", from Germanic for vulture because of it's size - probably should be a hard 'g' but no, the French changed it up and we got it from them.
The Jade Falcon sourcebook says that the jade falcon species was genetically engineered from peregrines and gyrfalcons to hunt some serpent on the Pentagon Worlds... but the two species hybridize easily in real life and it's a fairly popular combination already. Night gyrs, on the other hand, don't exist yet, if the mech is named after a bird. It'd be close to an owl, imo.
The cattle's name is just coincidence... they're named after the Gir mountain range in India. But I still look forward to seeing the mech in Cattlytics.

Yea ok, it's a Night Cow, but it will also smoke just about any Inner Sphere mech 1 on 1.
It's 3700+ bv (with a 3/4 pilot), though - you'd be fighting two awesomes and a javelin with that kind of bv.

TAG works on missiles as well, so LRMs, ATMs even Arrows and quite few clans had support stars, combine forces concept, even mechs like Nova Cat B,Night Gyr D , Bowman.
TAG only works on Semi-Guided LRMs, which are an Inner Sphere exclusive ammo type. It doesn't work on any other form of LRM or any type of SRM, MRM, or ATM.
@@Macrochenia I read rules ages ago and assumed all locking missiles will have benefit of a TAG as well, after double checking, well homing Arrows IV can use it to-so Bowmen still works :) But Hell Horses, Snow Ravens, Sea fox/ Diamond sharks, Blood Spirit all used combined assets including arty strikes and orbital bombardment... in dark ages Jade Falcons used scorch earth approach on regular basses (even with nukes).
@@boltezarziherl9451 Yeah, artillery isn't honorable, but not every opponent the Clans fight is honorable so they still make use of the Bowman as well as other Arrow IV-carrying mechs and vehicles like the Naga, Huey, and Chaparral.

The Night Gyr always seemed like a knock-off Nova Cat to me.
The Arctic Cheater, as MWO veterans will sometimes call it, was an unholy terror in that game, though I think it was more due to its bad hitboxes than actual superior performance.
The Linebacker is supposed to be a replacement for the Mad Cat, which I don't think it succeeds at. It's a fine machine, but it's no Mad Cat.
The Black Lanner was always super derpy, and I'm incredibly pleased that CGL managed to redesign the thing so it actually looks dangerous. It's been a favorite of my younger brother ever since the CCG days.
The Battle Cobra actually looks kind of like its name, with the shoulders flaring out like the hood of a cobra (and it spits death with those LPLs). It's a compact, efficient package of concentrated murder.
When it comes to the Nova Cat, its the other way around. The Nova Cat's design was inspired by the Night Gyr.
Nothing can ever replace my beloved mad cat.

Black Lanner and Night Gyr both designed by Jade Falcon, so the Gyr is a bird. Arctic Cheetah by Ice Hellion, Linebacker by Wolf and Battle Cobra by Star Adder.

I too was a bit meh on this box for a lot of the same reason. As much as I love the goofy cobra, the box itself didn't get me giddy. I still grabbed one for completion sake. Game-wise, not a bad one in the bunch IMO though. The thing this made me realize is that even the boxes I'm not all aflutter about have some of the best damn designs we've ever seen and that alone makes them (not you Pack Hunter) worth having.
Yeah I think I made a similar comment - I might be critical of some but seriously every mech from KS is at a baseline of awesome.
I dont know about iconic but the Cheetah is a decent light mech that clans need for that lower battle value.

I'm pretty sure the Night Gyr is supposed to be the Clans doing their usual wacky mad geneticist thing and crossing a Nightjar with a Gyrfalcon. But Night Cow is better.

Every box with a clan mech over 40 tons, Aaron: It’s cool but it’s so expensive :P Is that just your Is mindset, or do you have a lineup of heavies and assaults for clan, that are worthy (and not because they are iconic?).
The linebacker I think wasn’t a straight up timberwolf replacement, I think it was expedient to build with factories that couldn’t build madcats, IIRC?
EDIT: No, clan wolf wanted a faster timberwolf replacement, it is a little faster. It's also 20% cheaper in terms of Cbills.
Hahah you got me and it’s fair 😛 I think the clans in general just pay out the nose for ‘mechs because they are almost overgunned and too fast. It’s more of an issue in the BV calc imo than the mechs themselves.
There are a good number of alternate configs that fit the cost/benefit bill for me - I think the Summon A/B are solid. Stormcrow C is so much more useful than a prime (cost wise). Battle Cobras for days haha
Idk I always think about in the context of initiative, positioning, options… there is an inherent advantage in numbers, and too many costly clan mechs can nullify their bigger guns and faster speeds.
I have to wonder what the IS names are, as these are the Clan names. Or did the Wolves when they buggered off go "Yeah this is their names" and they just used that. Linebacker sounds like an IS designation. Great vid as always :)
If I remember right the Linebacker was commissioned by Phelan Kell and Natasha Kerensky and got named after a Linebacker because it’s wide and hunched over like a football player. Wolf-In-Exile mostly uses them so that might explain why it doesn’t have an IS name

The night gyr is one of thoms jade falcon mechs so i would assume it was named after a bird rather than a cow.
Also in the lore it had some experimental heat sink technology that made it produce light instead of heat - so it would start to glow or radiate light - so either at night in my mind it was like a bird with glowing wings (I guess like a fleshlight ...I mean flashlight) or maybe it looked like an irradiated cow... Either way that was one really one off thing.
The clans are wierd regardless so who knows.

Your thoughts on this house rule: if you don't attack during the attack phase you can reassign one tick in less merging two ticks.
Haven't had a chance to play any BattleTech games yet.
Yah the issue is recalcing the weapon damage on the fly, the missile maxs, etc. This is why we just left it “no reassignment”

It’s not a house rule that breaks any mechanics so I’d not throw up any flags - just the considerations aaron mentions
@@thomberg3457 I understand which is why I made the cheat suggestion. I haven't had a chance to play for a long time so I didn't think about that. I do appreciate both of your thoughts on it.
Less of a cheat sheet and more of math on the fly. Its easy enough with basic weapons but can get really tricky with a bunch of clusters and missiles… its why we built an app for card building
