  • In this lesson, learn how to use online dictionaries and the best online dictionaries for learning English!
    QUESTION: Which online dictionary do you use? What do you like to learn on an online dictionary?
    Here are my picks:
    learnersdictionary.com: Best basic dictionary. I like the Word of the Day & Ask the Editor features. The definitions are clear, & the examples are good. The ads are distracting.
    ldoceonline.com: Best dictionary for more information. Why I like it: British & American pronunciations, the examples come from the corpus (real examples that people said), fewer ads.
    dictionary.cambridge.org -- Choose "Essential American English." This is a good dictionary for beginners. I like the word lists, and there are few ads.

    Thank you teacher for this so helpful video. I am using Collins dictionary that I appreciate especially to pronounce IPA. Is it a good choice?.

      The Collins dictionary is excellent! To be honest, I had forgotten about that one, but it's very good. Keep in mind that the video pronunciations are British English, but the audio pronunciations can be in American or "English" (which is the British) depending on which one you choose.

      @@LearnAcademicEnglish Thank you dear teacher for showing me Longman. I am happy today doing exercises for all the necessary idioms phrasal verbs......I hope you to show me If I could master both accents American and British. You welcome in Algeria among us your second family.

      Hi Hassane,
      In my opinion, you should choose American or British English to study because there are many differences, and trying to learn both would be too difficult and confusing. Your accent will be a mix of influence from your native language and English. You should choose British or American accent to focus on by thinking about your needs--do you want to learn English to travel, work, make friends, etc? Think about which type of English is more common in those situations. Also, you can choose one depending on which one you like or feel is easier for you to learn.
      I hope that helps! Thanks for telling me where you are from. I have not been to Algeria.

    There is only one English dictionary...it is called The OED, it is the real English language.
    The Merriam Webster book has all the wrong spellings.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The OED is great for certain purposes since it has historical information about words, but Merriam, Longman, Cambridge, and others are great sources, too. Not sure what you mean by the "wrong spellings"...
