- I haven't been excited about a new Rolling Stones record for my whole life. That sounds really strange since I'm a pretty big fan of theirs. But I got into them with Hot Rocks, then Dirty Work because it was the new album at the time. So that might explain things,. But that all changed when I heard the advance singles from Hackney Diamonds. And now that the actual album is upon us? Well, now I can't stop listening to it.

Steel Wheels is the underrated album of their catalog,every track is highly melodic,the whole album is versatile,the energy isn't all ,if we talk about craft ,to me this one is the best of the last 34 years,by far

Voodoo Lounge is better than Steel Wheels.

Totalement d'accord Stéphane. L'énergie ne fait pas tout (voir dirty work). Steel wheels est un album solide, il y a une bonne cohérence entre tous les morceaux, quelque chose qui les lie entre eux. Il est très varié aussi. Il y a une couleur, une ambiance qui lui est propre. On aime ou pas le son, qui a peut être mal vieilli selon certains, mais c'est un super album, tout semble couler de source, avec evidence. J'ai un peu le même avis pour Voodoo Lounge, dont le son, d'ailleurs, n'a pas pris une ride. Dans les albums d'avant et d'après, c'est plus bancal.
The Stones are rolling - AGAIN ! Great first listen. These are songs that will grow on you !
Agree. Remarkable record. I did pick it up on vinyl and it sounds so great. You are spot on about that Pitchfork review. I thought the same thing, that this guy already knew what he wanted to write without listening to the record.
Such a lazy take on it. I’m avoiding that writer in the future.

I got Hot Rocks right after Dirty Work and became a fan from Dirty Work as well but after that I collected every album I could find. I love the new album. It's great and has many layers. They did it! They really nailed it this time.

What ⁉I love Dirty Work‼and....Steel Wheels to me is the greatest of all The Rolling Stones catolog‼There's depth and energy in that whole album...Voodoo Lounge is second best‼ Listen to Charlie Watts thick drums⚡🥁
Some 80 yr olds work pt in charity shops for something to do , others grow runner beans at the allotments or play bowls.
Whilst Mick , Keith and Ronny still make dam good music , even after 61 years .

It is almost inconceivable that not only are they still playing well but came out with one of their best albums in decades and not sounding like 80 years old or so at all! This album is one of the best rock albums of the 21st century for sure. Nice guest performances that really adds to the high quality of the work. Still a top 5 Rock Band for me and was there in 64 when the British Invasion happened, fan for life from that point. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

I like Dirty Work, Winning Ugly, Dirty Work, Harlem Shuffle, Back to Zero just to name a few, so this new one is more solid all they way through, great songs

Every stones album has a dirty touch...we have to immerse ourselves and dig in to get those dirty gems, love all the glimmer twins did with all the musicians...the Brian Jones era, the Mick Taylor era, the Ronnie Wood era, the Darryl Jones era and finally the Steve Jordan era...ladies and Gentlemen
Hi, Chris again. A friend ( more your age than mine ) and I have been ranking the Beatles albums. As a teenager in the sixties I was in the Beatles and Dylan camp with all the rest good also-rans. But I have tired of the Beatles and thought I would listen to the Stones. I now have listened a lot to all their studio albums and have found a new band to love. I go further, I don't think they have a bad album. And this one is surprisingly terrific. As an aside Dylan took time out to do some covers (and if you don't like Triplicate you're not listening) before coming back with great newly written songs. The Stones did Blue and Lonesome on which they are having so much fun and now this. Are we lucky or what!
Hi Chris. I like Triplicate, but don’t play it too often. Agree that those Sinatra records really allowed him to create something special with Rough and Rowdy Ways. I’d argue that he’s been mostly “on” since Time Out Of Mind. So cool you saved the Stones and can dive into such a rich catalog with fresh ears.

What a great presentation of the record, now I really want to get back to it. We were listening to it on a drive through the Catskills and we lost service about halfway through. I laughed out loud for real when you brought up the cover and continued to laugh out loud through the cover discussion. It’s dreadful, after so many iconic covers.

Well, damn. Now I need to listen to the new Stones record. I was prepared to let this one pass by without notice. Now, I am curious, to say the least. Our Stones "journey" is pretty similar.
One of the most surprising things to me is how much they can rock out and sound convincing. Something that can definitely sound forced with older bands. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

After a solid week playing this on vinyl (best), CD and streaming on Apple Music to my buds as I work or in the car, I am just so genuinely thrilled with this release.
You know, I was going to say “At their age” or “At this stage of their career”, but truth be told, I would have been so happy with this album 50,40,30,20,10 or 5 years ago. It’s just a bloody, BLOODY good album. Full stop.
Apart from Mess it Up. Still don’t get that! I can’t say I like it just because Charlie’s on it, or because Mick sings it all so well (he does) or because it’s harks back to Miss You/Dance/Emotional Rescue. It’s still just a bad song.

Love Sweet Sounds. Don’t care about the cover. Don’t have a record player so my listening is all digital. Bite my Head off rocks like Rip This Joint.
Pitchfork was going to pan the record no matter what it sounded like, and I would also be surprised if they actually listened to it.

The Paul Version is already going for really big bucks. I'd buy an official version to play. Seriously. Thats what im doing. Shocked how much it's going for.
It’s an instant purchase for me when it’s regularly available on vinyl.
The problem with critics of The Stones is that they can't help themselves comparing the latest album with 'Fingers', 'Bleed' and 'Exile'. Stop it already.
Consider their albums on their merits, and if you must compare, see how their albums stand-up against their chart contemporaries.
Given that, their later albums are all creditable. And I'm not even much of a fan.
One comment I’ll make about The Stones, as a fan since 1964. They INHABIT the genres they perform. When they play Country, they live in Country. Same with blues, soul, pop, disco, rock, gospel, reggae, rnr, they just INHABIT the genre. They don’t sound like they’re visiting, they ARE of that genre. About other band do that?

I just saw that there is a version of the "Hackney Diamonds" cover art that features red-leotard crossed legs. That doesn't include a Ronnie in the diamonds.
I have to agree with the "Stones by numbers" tag. They've been mining the same territory for the last 30+ yrs.
Whether this stands the test of time is of course, yet to be seen. "Best album since "Steel Wheels" somebody said...well that was pretty decent, but am I gonna play it more than 3 or 4 times like I did with "Wheels"?

Emotional Rescue is miles better than Dirty Work and Bigger Bang and Black and Blue and Satanic Majesties Reauest. Maybe better than Undercover. It takes years to determine what is good. I won’t know about this new one for a long time. Remember Exile was trashed when it came out and most now rate it as their best or second best
@flyingburritobro68 Agree to a point. But 64-81 were the Canon years. Anything after that I count less vital . Think about it how much good material has McCarthy or The Who released after 1980? Nothing. Every artist only as so much brilliance in them. Emotional Rescue was clearly Some Girls left overs. But hey it's all gravy.

Hate autotune and there is none on the album. The album sounds great. Sounds like 70's Stones. Jagger, Richards, Wood and the guest stars sound great. Love Paul's dirty bass.

Dirty Work was definitely a big dud. The songs were weak and unfocused, they seemed floundering and the cover art was lame, but One Hit to the Body was a great tune. Still is now. Lots of music from that era of the 80's was overproduced and lame. Steel Wheels was definitely an uptick in quality. Saw them on that tour in 89 twice and it was fun, but I just accepted they had passed their prime creatively. The albums that followed had their moments, but were again, mostly uninteresting. At least the concerts were still exciting. HOWEVER!! Now out of left field they drop this??? In 2023??? The whole album is awesome? I fully agree with you. A solid record. Really impressive. My favorite track is Whole Wide World. Great guitar playing, great singing and lots of melodies throughout. It has energy and a consistent classic Stones vibe. This album has a Tattoo You flavor to it in my opinion. Love that they did the Muddy Waters cover at the end. A perfect closing track to a really great album.
Actually DW was them at their worst as far as being a band. Jagger was trying to separate himself from the Stones and said in the press that the stones weren't good enough. In efforts to get his solo career going. When it flopped he came running back to the stones to save his ego. However all the records since Undercover have all been mediocre and slick. Love the new record.
I like the rawness of Dirty Work. But part of my appreciation of it likely comes from it being the new record when I got into them.

It was produced by Steve Lillywhite for goodness sake. But I totally agree with where you jump on their train makes all the difference. My first purchase was Emotional Rescue. Much maligned but a top 10 for me lol. So I totally get where youre coming from. Some people stop at GHS. I stop at the bangers from Undercover. Some side 2 greatness on that record.
All the albuns by them are great! Million of people loves all the albuns, and they are getting crazy with 'HACNEY DIAMONDS', ...Songs that asking for peace, hope and love in this world of insanity and wars by furious people!

There was a few good songs.
My head is spinning with the over-saturation of generous praising of Hackney Diamonds across the board (but thank you Pitchfork for being the lone wolf of sanity). This is a slick, over-produced collection of bland pop songs disguised as rock 'n' roll. Is it the best thing they have done since Tattoo You. Yep. But, that's not really saying much as Tattoo You was released over 40 years ago! Angry is an ok pseudo rocker and Rolling Stones Blues is a nice throw-back to their bluesy rooted beginnings (and what their last album could have, should have been more like instead of the drivel it was). My only hope (and I'll bet the house on this one) is that this will all die down in a week.
It's an awful album, I can't believe how many think it's good.
There's not a memorable guitar riff or lick on it, the production is awful, the overall sound quality is poor, the songs are cringe.
The more I listen the more I dislike it, and thats only twice and there will be no 3rd listen. 🤮

Lyrically, it must be the weakest album the Stones have ever put out… the most expressive lines being in the name of the album, “Hackney diamonds”.
For a band that across the decades have penned “Under my thumb” , “Parachute women” , ,, “Shine a light” “Fool to cry” “Winter”…to name a few, the new song titles lack inspiration , and already beforehand the listener knows there is little left to tell.
There is a push and pull here , Jagger trying too hard to reinvent the Stones and Richards trying to to steady the ship ,this is the Album that Jagger thinks the Stones should be making .
it seems to me that some of the songs are pretty old, and some of them are very new, those adding melodies and bridges that sit uncomfortably on the Stone’s mantlepiece
For me two of the weakest songs on the Album are the post punk, “Bite my head off” too Respectable for Some Girls (and who give’s a monkey’s who is playing bass ), and “Get close “ the chorus is mediocracy personified, in fact there are a couple of tunes that may well be ugly sisters to one of Jaggers solo albums . There are older cousins like Driving me too hard ,which has a distinct flavour of “Tumbling dice” and “Dreamy Skies” ….definitely the slow cousin of “Short and Curlies” off “Its only rock and roll “While Keith’s “tell it too me straight is as comfortable and comforting as your favourite old leather chair , as is Rolling Stones Blues
There are highlights and gems that were worth waiting for like “Sweet sound of heaven ““Depending on you “, “live by the sword”,and “Angry”. But also quite a lot of broken glass … It’s not the Album I was hoping for, far more like the one I expected.

Most of you are far too young to know good or great Stones from bad. Their best work. by far, is found on Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. Mostly, it was Mick Taylor who spurred the band to new levels. Since then, things have been mostly hit and miss but for me, this one (and I know I am mostly in the minority) is a big. overblown disappointment. Nothing much on here very catchy,, exciting or innovative. Yes, it is energetic, and yes, Jagger sounds great but there are really no melodies, no SONGS here. And I am old enough to remember when the Stones were really the Stones. This one is nothing but meh.
I’m an oldster too and I think this is a sold record. The Melodie’s and riffs open up with each listen. Well done.
Nonsense. You need a new hearing aid! There are songs on it that are so catchy that they were running through my head after two or three plays. And Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a masterpiece! Clearly lost on you though! Shame! 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿
You will get no argument from me that Beggars through Exile are their best. Beggars is my fave. Totally disagree that there are no melodies on this record. Whole Wild World, Get Close, Live By The Sword, and Angry are all currently stuck on shuffle in my head.

Its over produced hackneyed garbage...Its not even the Stones without Charlie..You might even without Bill all these years..
Just not digging it. Cheesey songs and production. Some really bad choruses. Sounds like the entire album was generated with AI. Using the flavor of the month producer Andrew Watt was a bad idea.
If that’s there, I’m not hearing it. Mostly I just feel fun. And it’s super cool they made a decent record again. Doesn’t bother me that they had outside songwriting help. I hated Iggy Pop’s Andrew Watt produced record, but his influence here doesn’t bother me. I think it serves the music. New Rolling Stones on repeat…it’s never happened for me.
Have you heard Andrew Watt the musician? He is a rocker. He was in the group California Breed with legendary vocalist-bassist Glenn Hughes and the great drummer Jason Bonham. Watt was the guitarist in that band. He also did a better job on this album than Don Was has done on the last Stones releases

The record sounds like generic Nashville top 40. Hard to judge how good the songs are or aren't, when it's mixed like that, complete crap, the mix that is.

If Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Exile on Main Street are 10s. This forgettable, overly-polished, melody-lacking record is a 3.

Few bands have produced a body of work, nor had the longevity, of the Stones. You were never gonna like albums of the Stones past the 70s, so your take is hardly objective.
@bilguana11 your right about that the stones haven’t made a great album since tattoo you steel wheels and dirty work were very good but not as good as tattoo you but the worst albums they were were bridges to Babylon and bigger bigger those albums suck didn’t care for them as much in my honest opinion the whole band should have stopped a long long time ago after steel wheels without Bill Wyman it’s not the stones when Bill left I knew it was the end of the stones
