Hunter Mahan states that he basically "stops" at the ball, which allows him to rotate into a balanced finish. When I have tried that, it really helps me to get a sound release. Chris's method is equally good. Much better than spinning out with a 60 m block! Great stuff.
Been unknowingly practicing this when I don't feel like getting out the impact bag. Interesting using it to hit balls I'll try this next time I am in the field. Thanks Chris!
I always felt like there was an aspect of deceleration in the mechanics of a proper golf swing and this video gave an excellent visual understanding. Thank you Chris. Your tutorials are unmatched.
Thanks for your prompt response Chris. Played yesterday with this in mind. Results were wonderful. Alot more really good shots, particularly with irons (less so with woods), and many less bad shots. Is the correct feeling from this deceleration drill, that the arms and then the club whip through impact after everything else has essentially stopped? And that the follow-through to a finish position, almost seems more passive after the club itself eventually decelerates? as opposed to what I have done for years which is to try to get EVERYTHING (body unit) and club to that finish position simultaneously (ie no deceleration of body parts). Hope you know what I am describing. If so I think I'm on to something here with your help. Also, why might have I had less success with woods than irons in this initial playing with this feel? And lastly, when does the club actually start decelerating? Is it after the full release point post impact? Sorry for all the questions but this is very exciting. Less effort, more accuracy and maybe some more distance is what I experienced.
Wonderful video Chris and I don't want to get too technical but that is unfortunately in my nature. I know a little bit, from being placed on Trackman and K-Vest, about this topic. What is your "thought" in terms of what you are making your body do, to decelerate? Is it first pelvic deceleration and THEN ALSO torso as well? Or just pelvis? Thanks much. ( From practicing this at home already without a balI I am appreciating that this concept and trying to execute it, also may have a collateral benefit for me....which is to keep my head down a bit longer through impact, looking down the line post impact and not standing up too quickly or coming out of the shot, so to speak......a bad habit I developed years ago).
Vance Weber hi Vance, yes you are spot on, pelvis slows down first followed my torso then arms and hands to transfer energy out to the club head. Hope it helps
Tested it on the range today, brillant stuff. I couldnt get the distance to 50% though, only around 75% less distance. Or to put it the other way. I can hit it 100-110 yards like you, but with my full swing I dont quite get the 190yards with the 6I. How important is that actually? Great videos, cheers
Only thing I'd add is that player needs to pull up/extend--as you did--to hit the ball squarely on the right arc. As you decel and the club releases, the head will descend and the shaft will rise. So you better make room for that shaft.
I can do this easy, for me it’s a punch shoot with really short follow through. But how to do this on full shoots and also full drives?? Or am I allready doing it..? Any drill or feeling tip please?
Strange that I hit like this and my golf partner always tells me to finish my swing. So now I am accelerating my pivot/body rotation at what seems right before impact and it helps me finish my swing. I have to say that I have picked up about 20 yards of distance by accelerating right before the ball. I feel like I am grabbing the ball with the club face and flinging it in the air versus my old swing I was attacking the ball. I still don't have it perfect because requires that infamous arms in the slot before you just rotate as fast as you can through the ball. I feel like I am only going to hit the ball half the distance but instead I've gained 20 yards on all my clubs. Driver went from avg 260 to 280 dead straight..... so this video confuses me because he is teaching to decelerate after the ball as fast as you can which will in turn probably make you accelerate your swing too early.... Anyhow just my two cents of experience.
I just started watching your videos, thank you, they are excellent, As opposed to many others, I really didn't understand the mechanics of decelerating (other than the theory). I don't see golfers decelerating. I didn't wasn't able to see your deceleration at ball impact time. I guess my question is.,,, How do you decelerate the body, to create a whiplike effect. Can you do another video on this subject? Thanks,
Absolutely the most succinct explanation of the important of deceleration to increase club head speed. Great work Chris!

Thanks a lot for explaining this drill in details
Helpful video Chris. I love the feeling of hitting those knock down punch shots. thanks!
Adam Collin thanks Adam
Heard it before but never quite understand how and why until this video. Great contents and big thanks to you Chris!
Eric Hsueh thanks Eric glad it has helped.
This is a great video Chris. Thanks for giving me a new perspective of the golf swing to look at.
nahshon cline thanks and hope
It helps

TechnickleEgg thanks for your kind words, much appreciated.
Very important mechanism of the golf swing and very well explained. Thank you!
monyet82 thanks glad you enjoyed the video
Good drill, very well explained
John Honeyman thanks John
Amazing.Thank you
I love you Chris Ryan...
How does this translate to the full swing? Instead of decelerating at the ball do you decelerate later?
Excellent video, thanks Chris
John Rushton thanks John

Mucho grazias signor, u xplanashon isa mui bono. . . tun cullo very mucho.
Interesting to try in the next golf season. Good for 50+ yards.
Thanks

Mind blown!
I started doing this drill yesterday-ball goes just as far as if I try to finish the swing completely. Also takes away any chicken wing potential.
really well explained Chris. Keep up all the awesome content man!
very good tip chris!!! cant wait to try it out on the range..
thanks for such valuable info
Chris - is this an extension of Phil Mickelson video on Hinge & Hold technique for pitch/chipping?
Mark Brown it’s the exact opposite imo
Why not use it on the course..?
Hate that excercis because I struggle with the hook, as I have Said, and I of I stopp early and don’t roll over I loose my fine length 😩

Tommy Fleetwood for example.
Agree on deceleration but lots of talk and no show… would like to see this video with modern tech and see numbers to prove differences
Greek. made no sense as to how that will cure a dead pull. My distance if fine, I hit the distance I need. I'm just left too much.
