  • We got some parts for the Civic:
2 new Denso Oxygen sensors, and an OEM Honda Camshaft Position Sensor.
Let's install the parts and go on a FULL-THROTTLE test drive up the mountain to see how the little Civic behaves.
Hopefully no more "Comebacks" haha :)

I went through 2 new Denso bank one sensor one o2 sensors after replacing a stolen cat. Both sensors lasted less than 2 days. I took it back to the mechanic 5 separate times because he refused to believe both sensors might be bad (when I asked him if he tested them, he said no) to the point where he replaced the engine pipe gasket (which had no leak) before he finally relented and got one from Honda. 3 weeks and counting on an o.e. Honda sensor, which he charged me an extra 100 bucks for, even though he charged me $150.00 for the Denso, which I wouldn't have minded except that the attitude of some mechanics is that the customer's wasted time is just time, but their wasted time is money.

I think there's a misunderstanding. I understand everyone hates dealerships, I get it. I agree the way they handled Ivan is completely childish and unprofessional. It's a business to business sales account. There shouldn't be any butt-hurt emotions involved. It's a business. Period.
However, none of you understand the warranty process a dealership goes through. Manufacturers look for any excuse to deny claims. That's a fact! The manufacturer would not have reimbursed the dealership for the battery. The customer was a customer of Ivan's, Period. If I remember correctly, and correct me if I'm wrong, the customer had no relationship with the dealership, he didn't even show up with the car. A repair order requires a VIN, mileage, owner's current address and contact information. Then a tech has to perform a battery test with a factory approved special tester, that may even connect to the internet with all the data directly to Honda. That didn't happen. The claim would have denied. So, I ask you, would you buy a stranger, that you will never see again, a battery?

G'day from Adelaide, SA. For some years, 'Dave Potter Honda' traded in a medium sized (large for Adelaide) showroom, and much advertising was done on radio and TV. A year (or two) ago it simply disappeared, and the premises houses 'Glenelg BMW', selling equivalent vehicles, in competition with 'Eblen Subaru' in a similar premises across the road... I don't know exactly why the Honda dealership disappeared, and whether it was to do with 'Dave Potter' retiring (or passed on), or a directive from Honda Japan with their sales strategy (through on-line ordering on choice of colors, sedan (saloon) or wagon variant) changing, or a rent arrangement of the premises... They did sell spare parts (stocked for maintenance), but it seems a local, readily available supply has disappeared...

Recently working on a Toyota Avalon 3.5l, had a code P158 for B2S2 O2 sensor for voltage too high. Initially just replaced the downstream sensor and code came back. Turns out with Toyotas that code will also set if the ECM is not happy the upstream data, even though it looked to be switching fine on scan data. Replacing the upstream sensor resolved the issue with the downstream code. I did notice however, the new sensor was switching a bit faster. So may have looked OK on the graph but was still too lazy for what the ECM wanted.

We still were ready to bite the bullet as I didnt bring much tools with me. Then they said we'd have to wait 2 weeks for the because a tiny tensioner spring was on backorder for timing belt.
We offered to void all warranty and would sign off on it if they could just re-use the spring.
Granted nothing was wrong with the timing aspect only water pump.

Good work Ivan, Brave man to do a head gasket at such high mileage. Lucky you did not get "it was not like that before" "ran like a watch before you worked on it" from your customer. As always another great video. P.S viewers should "blacklist" the Honda dealer! But it should be good to know they are watching your videos!!!

Hi Ivan, at 2:13 you show the two sensors, the old one looks shorter than the new one.
    (Different part number too.)
If so, then the old pickup would not be getting the full influence of the timing teeth on the camshaft because it would be short.
This would explain the rounded pulses.
You new one, the proper one by the looks of it, being longer picks up a stronger magnetic signal from the teeth due to it being much closer, hence a proper square output signal.

Great job on your part and a dirty move on the dealership. In this day and age of social media, the last thing you want is bad publicity especially when you are in the auto sales business. One Honda dealership is just as good as another especially when one of them pulls a fast one and gets caught. Keep these wonderful instructional videos coming.

During the Takata airbag fiasco, Honda initially didn’t have enough replacement parts available. So Honda corporate covered a car rental for me for over three months, even though my car was long out of warranty. I was impressed, and will be a a Honda customer for life.

Never heard of anyone around here getting that kind of red carpet treatment... my Takata equipped Honda was driven by my teenage daughter for years before the airbag part was available...no free rental car. You must buy a lot of new cars from them like my brother in law...he trades-in/buys a new car every year and so he's on a first name basis with every dealership in town. He claims it's his hobby, lol, about the most expensive hobby one could have outside of starting up your own racing team.

In my experience, its hard or next to impossible to find a reliable honest fair technician especially in the current world we live in.
    Dealership and some independents;
Charges way too much for mediocre work
Mechanics are rushing to complete the job so they can get to the next one
My vehicle is/was dent free before servicing. Now theirs a ding on the right front fender yeah I will try to prove that ):

Hi Ivan, that Dealership customer service guy just proved that they need more training. They should have just tested the battery if it was good, then they would have to test the car charging system to know which item had the problem. Instead, they just came up with a bunch of reasons why to decline the warranty. On the other hand, once you threatened them with bad PR on TH-cam the Gloves were on!! The loser in this match was the Dealership, the customer service guy not knowing how to handle the problem in simple terms made the Dealership look Bad and you still can get your parts!
I’m just a DIYer watching video’s trying to learn from guys who know their stuff. May have shoot the parts canon a little quick on the Battey because I don’t think we checked the charging system first. Just my thoughts, learn a lot from your video’s keep them coming!!

Our family has purchased 11 Honda vehicles these last 14 years my son and two daughters family plus my wife and I recently purchased Toyota’s. We got tired of the Honda run around and expensive cost of required service and their warranty coverages. Shopping at Toyota was easy, quick, courteous and the vehicles ride and drive much quieter and comfortable.

I have to agree with the majority here and think that it may be time to get Honda corporate PR involved here. Because that is just bad business practice from your local dealer. Now back to the Civic at hand. I have found that it's best to always replace the O2 sensors when a leaking head gasket is involved. Something about how O2 sensors don't react well when they come in contact with antifreeze. Antifreeze in the exhaust can literally foul the O2 sensors out, making them respond slowly, or not respond at all.

When Ivan said he was 'blocked' by a car dealership, I had to check to make sure it wasn't April 1.
When vehicles get to be that old, with over a quarter million miles on them, they get to the 'frequently fix' category. Like Scotty says, everything eventually breaks.
Ivan has me wondering what the inside of those sensors looks like, and why do they fail. Little insulated wires that short out? Solid state electronic stuff that burns out? What? You would probably have to melt the plastic to discover what is hidden inside. The guts probably cost $3 to make.

If the cam sensor is a three-wire job, it probably has an active pull-up. That slow rise-time on the old sensor was probably causing problems at high RPM. The slow-rise time was a symptom of an internal failure in the sensor's electronics.
