    Gage Fontenot
Jay won in 2012. They had very little funding.
Lasalle Military Academy, the winningest team in nationals history won with having instructors. That doesn't even change throughout the time.
These routines aren't complex at all. The hardest routine is Flour Bluff's Unarmed routine, and even then it comes down to cardio. And most of those routines are thought up by the cadets.
it's only overrated if you're not willing to strive for perfection.

nationals are so overrated. Unless your school has a crap ton of money, and has dedicated instructors that actually know how to teach these complicated routines, there's no way you can compete with any of these teams.

Gage and those like him: I am genuinely interested. Have you ever actually ATTENDED and/or COMPETED at the Nationals? My guess is you have not or you likely would make a different comment when speaking about the event that has without question done more to bring JROTC drill & ceremony (and the cadets who love it FROM ALL SKILL LEVELS) into the mainstream spotlight than any other event ever held.
If your only goal after many months of training is to attend Daytona and win the Masters Level of the Nationals, and that is your only mark of success, then yes I think you are right, it sounds like your efforts might be lost. If that is what you believe attending the Nationals is all about, no wonder you feel that way! However, with multiple levels of both Armed & Unarmed competition, there is generally a competition and a division that best fits the needs of most schools who are serious about drill. It is a time to bask in a year of effort. To be in a place and time when you are surrounded by all things drill. This why hundreds and hundreds of former competitors return annually.
Regarding the cost, yes taking a bus / van / car trip to Central Florida and staying in an oceanfront hotel for multiple nights for dozen(s) of cadets and instructors can be expensive. However, dozens of programs at many high schools both affluent and impoverished do this annually with bands and other groups every year. The fact that you seem to believe this is not worth doing is fine, but there are hundreds and hundreds of programs across the world that have attended for over 30 years that might have a different perspective. Percentage-wise, few of them have won many trophies yet they seem to feel the experience was exceptional for the cadets win or lose.
While I agree that many schools have instructors that enjoy doing the minimum effort and enjoy getting on the golf course by 3pm every other day, why do you sound bitter for the cadets and the instructors that wish to make a commitment to excellence and enjoy competing in a first class indoor venue with judges from many of the major service training depots/schools surrounded by like minded people of all ability levels who simply believe that drill is a fantastic way to instill the lessons of hard work, sacrifice, leadership, esprit de corps, and numerous other benefits that will carry forward with each of these cadets long after their days on a drill deck have ended?
While you may never attend, I wish you well and hope that at some point in your life to do get a chance to work with a band of brothers in some activity, be it civilian, military or even in government, maybe a social group or athletic event. I hope you have to work hard on and off your area of expertise to make something happen. I guarantee if you do, win or lose, you will have lifetime memories and you will be better for the experience.
