CEX have finally added the option to buy a retro game with or without a manual. With this comes a price increase but also a trade in price increase. Will you be looking to take advantage of this or is ebay and gaming conventions still the best place to sell, trade and buy retro video games?

The Market decides the value and if no one buys it at an inflated price they’ll have to lower it eventually if they want to sell it.

I’ve seen CEX sell a mint copy of Jet Set Radio and I considered buying it. I saw it through the window, it still had the plastic wrapper on it, it had never been opened. It’s worth 40 now but 30 at the time I saw it

CEX staff are not actually trained to tell if something is in mint condition.

Makes me wonder how anything ever gets traded in as mint. if the staff don't know what they're looking for, they probably never think about it

I can come up with a bunch of scenarios where CEX trade-in has been easier for me, even if I know I'd make more money on eBay. I think the main thing is convenience: I can bring my items in, get them checked/priced up, and then leave with money or a voucher. I can do this in bulk, which I took advantage of when getting rid of a surplus of PS2 games, and I can do it with games that would otherwise get less through eBay because of scratches or missing instructions, which ended up being the case with the Sega Saturn games I sold through CEX as well.
Time is a luxury, and taking that time to not only list a game, post it, but also deal with any hiccups inbetween can be a nightmare and a half. I have been unfortunate enough to deal with buyers (especially on bid items) that not only fail to actually pay for the items they were putting their name on, but in other situations, lie about a game's condition in order to take advantage of a return and a refund.
CEX can be scummy but the general public can be scummier.

I think the cut off for manuals is fifth to sixth generation. Everything from the NES, SNES/MD, and N64/32 bit generation is behind glass and labelled as with or without manuals. Everything from the GameCube/PS2/Xbox onwards is on shelves and there's no distinction.

A local retro store near me prices all their games on CEX values, so this will definitely influence the market.

I worked at CEX about 10 years or so ago and they had a 3 teir system for all hardware, they'd just slightly rename it depending on what hardware it was. Phones were A-C, consoles were Boxed>Unboxed>Discount. Regardless though, the rules were pretty consistent. A/Boxed was basically as new. The hardware needed to be pristine, with all accompanying boxes/manuals, essentially it had the plastic wrapping removed and thats it. B/Unboxed, the hardware still had to be pristine, but it may be missing original packaging or some accessories. You may get away with some very light cosmetic scuffs. C/discount meant it was still in working condition. I imagine the teirs of old games are the same

    Mint:
Box is in as new condition (if it had a self hanging tab it's got to still be attached)
Game cart shows no wear or marks
Manual looks as new, some small wear from thumbing through is permissible but has to look almost unsullied to qualify.
So basically it's got to be like a few Master System games I still have. The manual and box look really clean and tidy and the cartridge itself has to look like it's barely been touched.
Hardest part to swallow is what they Sell for vs what they buy for.
You could go to a games fair that are held all over the country and easily get what CEX ask all for yourself. And you can also find some mega deals as well compared to retail stores.
Because there was no way I was paying 70 quid for MGS: The Twin Snakes that was complete and in good condition. Games fair in Gloucester....38 quid. Totally sold at that price

Managed to get 3 cex online orders in a row all successful when they 1st changed the W/manual thing. All greta conditions. I got Parappa the rappa perfect for £40 which is now 50!
Looney tunes racing for 15 which is now 20 (obvs had to pay £6 total postage) but glad i got a couple games ordered before the price hike! Gutted i ran out of vouchers at that time so couldn't capitalise on getting more before the price increase😢

I once bought a 'mint' turtles in time on the snes. It was so far from mint it was absurd, so I returned it. I bought some mint dreamcast games but stopped doing that when I realised that standard dreamcast games could also be in great condition, so there was no point paying extra.

If someone tried to trade in a sealed copy of a game I would presume that Cex would be opening the cellophane to make sure there's a game in the box, there4 wiping the collector value off by 90% or something. Are they going to buy in sealed games on good faith?

The godfather don edition ps3 £40? Crazy. I saw the original killzone boxed version on ps3 in CeX for, it was between £50-£80. I can’t quite remember but wtf. That’s nuts. Ratchet trilogy, god of war collection and sly collection on vita are very expensive too. Not as pricey as killzone but still pricey. Games are definitely only going up. Sky’s the limit. I’m keeping every game I buy from now on.

Side topic of CEX... ps1 games have a platinum version seperate category... and thus sometimes different prices.. but the n64 'players choice' silver boxes do not.. and I've just ordered a very common game in MK64 W/manual ... so this will still keep the 'roulette' side of it alive because I'm not accepting a silver players choice version 😂 so yeah, cex should update platinums for n64 too

  • @Sasahara-Lafiel
    @Sasahara-Lafiel 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would take CEX mint as no discernable faults. So no damage and only minor wear and tear depending on which category. they may more lenient on cardboard boxes as they can have minor wear before they even reached the shelves if they weren't plastic wrapped.
I would class my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga as mint, but it does has faults on the outer box, minor wear on the flap edges, small amount of creasing and a 2mm patch on the front where a label removal removed the art. But everything else inside is like it was on the day of release.
Their standards might be higher than this as they don't appear to have any mint Saturn games in stock, but from a collector point of view, my copy even with it's faults is probably in the top 1% that exist. I've yet to see a better condition one. I might post some photos on the CEX retro group and see if they agree with me.
I would expect PS1 game to be pretty much perfect to be classed as mint. I've purchased a few non mint games from them which probably should have been classed as mint.

Anothing with the Manuel is for collecters as most collectors want complete in box thays why they can charge more for complete in box vs boxed cus they know it will sell to the right collector as they will play 100s if not 1000s of pounds

  • @Kenno10rapid

Ten percent is fair with a cap regardless of the game price. So the maximum you can only pay up to a certain amount to have the manual included. I would say twelve pound would be fair.

MINT means un opened in original box no defects this doesn't mean new this can be 30 year old game but someone brought and didn't open it at all which is what collectors will do buy for cheap then not play it keep it for years then sell it in mint condition there is a little unwritten rule however which is it is allowed to be opened to test the game but other than that it has the original box and no marks etc

For the most part, I'm not too fussed about owning the manual for a game, however, I do have one exception. I have an incomplete copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night that requires one. I've owned it for years and I've never seen a loose manual for it out in the wild. Last I checked, the difference between complete and incomplete was over £100 so I'd be willing to pay quite a considerable amount of money for one despite it just being a few worthless pieces of paper. It looks like CEX are valuing the difference at about £25 rather than £100 though, which is interesting.

    • @Neo_Player
      @Neo_Player 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is a good point and I noticed the same for snes games. For a lot of heavy hitters there's a £20 difference between manual and no manual. But those manuals are really rare and worth a lot more.

This seems like a knowledgeable video game community to ask this so here goes
Does anyone know of an pc game 90’s most likely - side scroller like the vintage Mario’s and the Simpsons in the video, played character was a girl - like in Mario you hit a box and something like a big glowing ball came out and I think it made her look like she got an electric shock- and when she fell down a hole or died she screamed. If anyone has info about this please let me know :-)

A few years ago I bought a couple of NES 'mint' condition games, from different CEX stores, over the course of a few months; none were anywhere near close to perfect, but all had manuals, and were in generally decent condition, abeit with scuffs/marks, and slight tears. That being said, it's pretty hard to keep 35 year old cardboard boxed games in pristine condition, so I guess the NES is just about the worst case scenario.
