  • How to create a design for an espalier Pyracantha using a nylon cord and white tapcon screws.
I used a small concrete drill to go into the white mortar between the bricks.

Thank you how lovely ! I am going to have a go at doing this. I bought a Pyracantha last year and took cuttings that are growing on well - it may take me a few years to achieve a stunning diamond espalier creation like you have there but I am looking forward to trying it.

I am so glad I have inspired you. You will be surprised by how quickly the pyracantha grows. The 5 pyracanthas that were planted at the base of my wall in Feb/March of 2020 are just about to complete the full diamond design. I cannot believe, myself, the rapidity with which these plants are growing on the brick wall. The only issue I have with the pyracanthas growing on my wall is that I must spray more than occasionally for the aphids. Hopefully, you will not have that problem. Good luck to you 👍

This is beautifully done. Why did you use nylon rather than a metal wire, which would seem stronger and more durable? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for commenting on my video. I am glad you enjoyed it. Regarding the choice of nylon over metal wire, the nylon rope was suggested to me by an employee of a garden business, here in my area. What I found in line is that nylon rope's advantage over common rope fibers is "its resistance to abrasion, UV rays, mildew rot and chemical exposure." Although metal wire may be more durable, I found that stretching the nylon rope from one tapcon to another all along the length and the height of the wall was a very easy task.

Amazing how quickly it has grown. I want to this on only a six foot wall and am encouraged that it will only take a couple of years. Having said that, the wall is in shade. I’ve been told the pyracantha can handle shade. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

      Thank you for your comment.😀
Here is what I found on line:
“It is not recommended for planting around the foundation of a single story building, because it grows too large, too fast.
      Cultivation
Pyracantha prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Planting in highly fertile soil will produce rampant growth, which makes the plant more susceptible to fire blight and decreases berry production.”
So, if your wall is only 6 feet tall, you may find that you have to prune the plant very often. It grows so tall so fast - up to 2 feet a year.
      Hope this helps. 😀

I truly appreciate your insight. But so disappointing. I was avoiding using jasmine or ivy as I didn’t want to be pruning as often. I just love the look of that espalier…. Again, thank you.

Do not worry about this one issue because, very often, one challenge opens a new creative way to enhance an area of your garden😀 Have thought of planting mopheads hydrangeas in that shaded location? You plant some repeat bloomers like Endless Summer😀

Your video for pyracantha espalier is wonderful and very helpful.
How do you attach the pyracantha branches you are training to the nylon cord? Are they twisted and intertwined into the cording as they grow?
Or tied/attached onto the cording? Or something else?
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for your kind comment.😀
Attaching the pyracantha branches is very easy. I simply twist them around the nylon cord. When the branches become very thick I cut the excess branches. That’s all there is to it👌
Just a quick note: I do not not wear gloves when I twist the branches because I find it easier to maneuver. However, I must be vigilant not to be hurt by the thorns.
