Just bought myself an used X10 for cycling trips. While browsing some reviews I found your channel and this is absolutely grand Sir! Great reviews and philosophy of photography, not that usual tech tips and megapixels.

I have a question for you. What do you think of the viewfinder on the x10? I read its a 85% equivalent, how does it affect the shooting experience? I'm coming from a long background of shooting exclusively with film camera so I don't really see myself using a screen for composition. Is the viewfinder still usable or you always end up cropping all your pictures to achieve the wanted composition? Thank you!
Hi Lyz , it’s range finder style, although it’s AF in reality. The viewfinder is a viewing lens essentially making the camera twin lens. So unlike SLR cameras with a mirror (which you have been using) and Electronic viewfinders in mirrorless cameras, the image you see in the viewfinder is similar, but not the same image as the camera lens is seeing and capturing. At distances over a meter that’s not really a problem, the images is essentially pretty much the same, but for closer subjects under a meter, parallax error occurs, which means the image you see through the viewfinder is shifted over enough to make the composition difficult, as the capture lens is further over and thus producing a crop which doesn’t show up in your viewfinder. As long as you understand this it’s not a problem to compensate. One thing worth mentioning, is that the viewfinder is near enough to the lens barrel, to mean it is actually obscuring the bottom right hand corner when zoomed out to wide angle. It doesn’t show in the photos of course, but has to be ignored by the photographer using the viewfinder in wide shots. Zooming in eliminates it. The short answer is that the viewfinder does not look the same, or feel the same, as in an SLR film camera using a mirror to show the actual image, but it’s also really good fun using a small rangefinder style vf, it’s different, and it’s always nice to try something new. In fact i'm use to rangefinder, I mostly shoot whit those. I think the main difference for me is the lack of framelines and the lack of space around the framelines. I might go for the x30 or the xPRO1 for that reason.

Always love seeing your Fuji x10 videos! I’ve been experimenting with mine now that I finally got an SD card. -Do you have any extra batteries for it? If so, which ones? I got this camera from ebay straight from Japan and it only came with the original battery. No charger or cable.
Also, are you on instagram? Would love to see your work there!

The battery for the Fuji X10 is the NP50, very inexpensive, I use Duracell Direct, they make excellent third party batteries, I use them for my Nikons too. You can pick up an NP50 battery charger from Amazon, loads to choose from, but if you want an original Fuji charger then check eBay. I hope that helps. Best wishes and enjoy the x10, cheers Phil
