2022 MINI Cooper S 6-Speed MANUAL Review: Camp & Quirk Worth the Cost?

  • The 'F56' Mini Cooper S is perhaps the best ode to the OG Mini Cooper. This 2022 Mini Cooper S Hardtop showcases the brand's second facelift (LCI) of the F56 Cooper S, bringing it into the 2022 model year with some nice updates and keeping the classic formula otherwise unchanged. The 2022 Cooper S is powered by a 2.0L BMW B48 turbo four cylinder, making 189 HP and 207 lb-ft. Our particular #2022MiniCooper S came with a 6-speed manual transmission, a delight to find on any brand new car these days! While the John Cooper Works might be a better "on paper" competitor to other hot hatches and fun lower-power cars, how does the 2022 #MiniCooper S 6-speed stack up? Better than you might think...

    It's basically a practical Porsche

    Finally a sensible review. Thank you! 189HP is more than enough for daily driving. 99% of drivers will run out of driving skill long before they run out of car. Also note at 15:20 how roomy it is in the front. His right leg does NOT hit the center console, his left leg does not hit the door panel, his knees are not up against the steering wheel and there is plenty of room for his arms and elbows. The Mini is actually shorter than the Miata yet it has plenty of room for the driver and passenger and you can even squeeze two people or your dogs in the back. Also worth mentioning, the interior materials, fit and finish is better than the competition and it's the only new car that comes in a convertible version that seats four, and fits in tiny parking spaces. Two thumbs way up.

      Glad you enjoyed! It's a fun car despite being "grown up" over the R53 and other early 'BMW Minis' from 2002 or so. And yes, there is something to be said for slow-car-fast, and it's not even that slow.

    Great review! I have a 6 speed manual clubman and you explained the function of the shifting really well. It operates the same in my car. Despite the rev hang (I just hold the clutch in a second longer), I love driving my manual MINI. It's cheeky and fun and turns heads. If only I could get big trucks to stop parking next to me, even when I park at the far end of the lot.

    Thanks for the video! I had a 2012 MCS and it was a blast to drive. And then I made the mistake of watching that Top Gear review of the C6 Z06 and I had to have one. If you think the mini is a fun power/weight ratio, then you really should test drive the C6 Z06. 3100lbs and 505hp stock and let me tell you, the amount of power out of the box will impress you. BUT I digress…I still miss my Mini Cooper sometimes! You can’t just go bank robber around corners and mess around like you can in a mini. The mini is almost like having a cheat code for a video game. It makes you a great driver, while a corvette or a viper command respect and you have to really focus on what you are doing. Definitely check into the c6 Z though. Performance bargain of the century I feel like.

    There’s definitely a mic somewhere near the exhaust or engine, I have the 6 speed manual 2022 cooper s, engine sound isn’t that loud inside the unit.
    Also, mine didn’t have the HK sound system, and it’s not totally fine, get the HK! I needed to add it on later because the base one that came with the car just wasn’t cutting it.

    " it also has this green setting which i don't know why you need a setting for green, when the whole car is painted green"
    I am not sure if you were joking but green mode changes the throttle response to optimize fuel consumption and display additional eco tips on the infotainment screen - useful for city driving 🤷‍♀

    I really like this car and have been debating between this and Mazda 3 hatch. The main thing holding me back from this is the fact that there is no android auto and I don't see myself ever going back to iphone for apple car play. Do you know what the connection experience is like for an andriod user?

    • @OutMotorsports

      I don't, unfortunately. I'm strictly iOS over here and the friends I have with these newer Minis are all also iOS users :-/

    I miss my JCW 2 door it was oozing with character and fun to drive. I love real British Racing Green, but this car is not that color. I really like smaller cars, seems like every small car is going to 185 inches nowadays so the Mini at around 152 inches is perfect to have fun in.

  • @allosaurusfragilis7782
    @allosaurusfragilis7782 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know exactly what you mean with those revs hanging on. I've hit a vw up which does this and it makes quick upshifts tricky. In fact I just change slowly now. I havent noticed this before in other cars . Wondering if its a recent issue.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว

      It happens because manufacturers want to keep emissions low - the gist is that the car is programmed to delay fuel cut-off when you lift your foot off the throttle so the engine doesn't briefly run lean (which increases NOx).
      Tremendously annoying.

    Really into this car but the rev hang kills me! If only earlier generations had been reliable, I may very well be driving one now.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the rev hang is frustrating. The F56 has been out for a while now so there *may* be a way to eliminate or reduce it with an aftermarket tune. Granted, those tend to void the warranty and we can't vouch for any given this review focused on a 100% stock-from-Mini model. But it's worth Googling ;-)

    • @bigmacdaddy1234
      @bigmacdaddy1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then buy a current Gen 3 model. They fixed all the reliability issues. Problem solved.

    Is it true that the sunroof is terrible? Doesn’t fully block the sun, it makes the car too hot or too cold, it gets stuck and the rain destroys it?
    Is it true?

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. Any sunroof will be less insulated than a solid roof and thus let the car get hotter/colder than it would otherwise while sitting, that's not a Mini-only thing. Can't comment on it getting stuck or otherwise being problematic as ours functioned perfectly. But, we drive brand new cars with only a few thousand miles so longer-term ownership is not generally something we can speak to with much intelligence.

  • @sergedurand6519
    @sergedurand6519 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Car is fun no doubt, I love it. I got to differ with you about the brakes tho. Little car just won’t stop, the brakes feel weak even a bit spongy, they need to be upgraded.

    • @bigmacdaddy1234
      @bigmacdaddy1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. I have the same car and the brakes are top notch and stop on a dime. If you want even more braking power then just get the JCW version.

    • @sergedurand6519
      @sergedurand6519 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigmacdaddy1234 yep, I have the same car, there’s a lot of roof for improvement brakes wise. Also, it’s not about it being a JCW or not, my A5’s brakes feel on point and aggressive, no need to get the RS5 to have good brakes. So, the brakes on the cooper S may feel good to you, but to me they definitely could be better. I know I will be upgrading mine as soon as I’m done with this set of pads.

      Correct, as mentioned in the video, it'll auto rev-match in Sport mode only. Nice that you can choose when it does it for you vs. when you do it yourself. Auto rev-matching is super handy in some cases but on back roads, it can be fun to do it yourself.

    I, too, was guilty of thinking BRG was nothing if not a matt dark green BUT I was wrong, too. The origin of how red, white, and blue Team Great Britain [GB] came to adopt green as its FIA racing team national colour is both surprising and heartwarming. Surprising because the very 1st livery was actually a light shamrock / moss green (so, yes, closer to this new lighter green) in tribute to Ireland which permitted GB to host its inaugural rally there as road racing was barred in GB. Heartwarming because only support was extended to GB at a time when GB's promise of Irish self-rule was still being reneged upon: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_auto_racing_colours?wprov=sfla1
