There is always something special about miniatures vs the digital realm. They do look different on camera but it's more than that. When you hire these modelers to build these things with minimal direction they contribute to the final look of the film through happy accidents, choices they make in the kitbashing or the weathering, which usually enriches the final film, or even inspires new ideas for shots, vs just working through the shot list derived by people very disconnected from that creation process.
Dear Berton Pierce ... This is, in short -- a love letter to your work. You have a new fan in myself. Not only are your models exquisite -- -- but your passion about filmmaking and homages to my favorite science fiction films are & is truly inspiring. And like myself, you still believe in the 'power' a real miniature as opposed to what I consider to be emotion-challenged CGI. As a produced screenwriter of a minor cult film, THE BANKER (1989), it was Douglas Trumbull's SILENT RUNNING (1971) that got me wanting to be in this crazy Business of Show as a screenwriter and director when I was 12. Side Note: I worked for Doug at ShowScan in the mid-80's in editorial. And for the record, there's smart, creative folks ... and then -- -- there's Douglas Trumbull smart. By example, he would have at least 15 solutions to any problem and I've used that lesson in everyone of the 650 commercials I've directed. If there's any ideas you've been kicking around that could use a screenplay or the like ... do feel free to contact me. You've got a mighty soul in your filmmaking and telling a stories of the human heart encountering fantastical moments is what life is about. Keep at it. Like I said, you have a fan in yours truly and I'd like to see more of your creative journey realized. Be well, be SAFE ... D.A.
Keep up the great work Berton. I really appreciate the look behind the scenes that you continue to upload. You've worked with some real legends of the craft. Well done.
I wish I could get a complete copy of Sense of Scale! I love all that stuff you and the others build for so long. I'm just a 58 yo. hobby scale modeller building stuff for 50 years now. Must be such fun to work on movies! Thanks for all the interviews.
I believe it was one of your clips where someone talks about when you have model makers who know what they are doing then you can't tell it's a model. Beautiful shots. Well done! Also, hello Alice!
I have already downloaded and watched Adventurados and loved it. I appreciate the amount of work that went in to it and the scenery and models were fantastic. Keep up the great work.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is actually a play from the 1960s. Very meta -- theatre about theatre. And metaphysical -- about reality, agency, fate, etc.
Would love to see this film. Unfortunately, the film is not on Amazon, or Apple. Maybe the film is not available any more, since the film wasn’t distributed widely. Oh well.
"We've gone to space by accident!" Sorry, you mentioned Withnail so that was inevitable! 🏆🇬🇧😂 Your film looks amazing, I aim to watch it... even if it must be burglary!
building real models is a much more intuitive creative work. I always strive to use the cheapest materials available and most times they look as good or better than the expensive ones. Hot glue instead of resin and wood glue instead of latex
The idea of C3P0 Aand R2D2 came from the two 7 samurai characters, the idea of these characters being these tiny things inside a bigger universe. Something like that. Lucas was a clever guy no? He also applied a way of looking at his world that made it unique and revolutionary. Cant remember, its quite important. He says it in a talk. I'll be back
Ah yes,, this was it,, George used his out of culture experience of going in to watching 7 Samurai cold and made Star Wars for people of his culture to recreate that effect that he alone had, for millions of people. Dude from California enters into feudal Japan without the movie even ever being aware of his viewers culture eye will ever witness it = That dude from California creating a world that does the same to people from Earth. But the dude from Earth made it. Thsts an incredible achievement in story telling form done in cinema.. Like the first self conscious narratives in literature.
Batteries Not Included, is a movie that hasn't been talked about enough in these days of 80's nostalgia. What a fantastic film!
This is why I love kitbashing models. Total inspiration.

Exactly! That's the idea.

I only saw the movie.
Amazing
Inspirational thank you.
What a great video
Thanks! It was great to get so many talented people to help build everything.
@@piercefilm Got some Red Dwarf vibes in some cases
@@Cartoonman154 Absolutely! That was a fun show. And it was great to have Steve Howarth and Bill Pearson aboard since they made models for Red Dwarf.
wonderful
I would agree with his earlier remark that space movies are too clean.
13:20 that's no K-9, it's a scutter!
The middle of the satellite dish, is the deflector dish from the TOS USS Enterprise.

We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here and we want them now! Great film.
@@piercefilm 😂 Thank you, TRULY made my day.
PS: "Are you the farmer?"
how did you build the moon surface models?
Cement! Just poured it to make interesting shapes for background hills. And I used photo cutouts of the real moon.

Where can we find this movie?
It's here on my channel! Strange that so many people don't scroll through my channel videos.

I want to buy the Blu-ray of your documentary “ASOS”
I wish I had some to sell! I also prefer Blurays to streaming.

..More evidence of that "at-least a small market" that I was talking about earlier (on your AIR FORCE ONE upload)..
@@piercefilm Do you have DVDs? They're sold out everywhere.
What kind of lens were used for shooting the minis? Wide angle lens? Macro?
Wide angle. Lots of light and aperture at 16 or 22.
@@piercefilm Thanks, I'm planning on buying some gear so that helps. Your work looks great.
No cgi can beat real models...
Can you please list the budget for each miniature?
I forget the costs for each one. I think I spent about 15,000 Euros for all the miniatures.
Who paints mattes and backdrops? Whos electric and carps?
I did everything except build some of the models. Filmed everything in my living room. Harry Walton (Abyss, Robocop) painted the one matte painting.
