OK, so the new 4680 cell is bigger than the 2170 (by 5.48x you do the math). The energy it stores is 5x more (according to Tesla). So, the capacity increases by 5x for a 5.48x increase in size. I make that a 9% step backwards.

There was a lot of stuff that interested us geeks, but may have been boring for the average Joe. There were several parts that I found to be very profound. The overall message was that they have a solid grasp on what needs to be done to get to their goals. The challenges are what have to be overcome. Costs of materials, costs of development of "the machines that make the machines", and the goals regarding minimizing the time to go from prototype to full production.
I think they mentioned something about speeding up production by reducing the number of larger cells. Also the single piece casting speeds up the building of the vehicle. I think this is a good idea. I wonder how these changes are going to affect the collision repair businesses? Time will tell. They also said something about using certain types of cells for certain vehicles for the optimum results. And overall cost savings for using the LFP cells for cars made in Shanghai.
Overall, Musk knows a lot about his business. Stockholders should see that as a sign that the company is a good investment.

Or maybe "the gamblers" realised that Elon doesn't have much to impress after all the hype around this event?
Basically the only tangible thing they have shown is a Model S facelift that's not even ready yet.
All their great ideas are vaporware and will be for a long, long time.
Also, seeing Elon and the other guy not being on the same page about how achievable these goals are is not very confidence inspiring...

One thing that was obvious when reading between the lines. In the next decade there are going to be major changes within the auto industry. @Cristi Elon said 20 million cars a year by 2030. Even Tesla's 500k this year is putting a strain on them. What you need to understand is that most car companies need to sell high volumes to make money as well dealerships make money on parts and service. .
Right now the only thing saving them is peoples ignorance of EV's. Once people figure out that an EV requires little to no maintenance and will last many times that of a ICE equivalent. Then it is game over to the companies that are not planning now to ramp up for when Tesla is making 20 million EV's a year. The only company I see as possibly having a chance is VW as they are scaling now to keep up. Though even then with the $25K Tesla coming out they will also be hard pressed to compete.

My guess would be it's talking about a single, big 4680 cylinder vs a single, smaller 2170 cell. Obviously a 4680 is going to hold more energy because it's larger, but you can't fit as much into a pack as you could with a 2170, so that 5X energy increase doesn't really carry directly over to a 5X range increase.

Jeff McKie I assumed they held 5 x the energy mostly because they were around 5 x the volume (about 5.5 x if you calculate volume solely on the cell dimensions) of the 2170s but the increase in power in/out was due to the new construction method. I’ll have to go back and watch that part again, I’d be surprised if they were using energy and power to be the same thing.

@@EmilKlingberg That's no exactly true. There's a website that tracks the registration of cars in Spain, Norway and Netherlands with Norway being the biggest EV market in Europe. The id. 3 launched in September and is apparently already outselling the Tesla Model 3 with 1562 compared to 1318 units in this month. Considering the fact that the car just launched the numbers of the VW are expected to increase further in October. I think it would be wise not to underestimate the competition...
Here's a link to the website if you wanna check for yourself. There are many ineresting analytics and metrics: eu-evs.com/index.html

I’ve seen ID3s on the roads in the U.K. VW is a brand Europeans know of and trust, and ID3 is a very polished electric car (minus some software glitches) without the poor build quality of Tesla’s. ID3 is already outselling every other EV in Europe.

The whole problem is that the production of cars is being held back by the amount of batteries they can make. So Tesla is not going to sell batteries; they are going to buy batteries like a sponge soaks up water!

    • @slowmomma7222
      @slowmomma7222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

They can use Tesla's patent to make their own cells in this new efficient manner and pay tesla a small fee for each one. Which manufacturers will have to do if they plan on competing long term.

  • @NYProfessional

From a nerdy perspective, the event was super cool. From a strategic perspective, it was a blunder. Tesla would have been better served by announcing the 2 new cars and then bringing the deluge of innovative batteries to the market in the form of new products and pushing down the prices. Let the competition figure out what hit them. What say you?

I think it is actually well thought through decision to reveille this much... If your purpose as company is to purely make profit, than yeah, surprise your competition ... If your goal is to speed up electrifying the world & reduce carbon and you understand you can't do it alone... you want your competition also to speed up ... this is exactly the message to them: accelerate your development...or else you will be out of business

    • @NYProfessional

@@mcstream The Geriatric western auto companies won't learn. The event benefits the Gen-X Chinese battery makers who now will chase Tesla harder. Strategically, it would have been smarter to keep it under wraps and partner with other companies in the supply chain and deliver the final battery product to the rest of the world.

You can do a quick calculation to get close. Model S long range...402 miles x 16%. That number... it’s 60 something add to 402. It will be better than that. The new battery has 5x the energy density. Means less weight to do the same job as old batteries. Increases the range.

That would cause Huge Demand problems for Cars they sell today, So Ofcourse they didn't announce that. It would cause an Osborne Effect and would slow down Tesla if that happened. They still need to sell cars today.

But they are not putting the new batteries in the current models. Elon specifically talked about using one piece castings for the front and back subframes in conjunction with the new batteries in a structural battery pack. So new Model S with a lighter structure made lighter still by the use of the battery pack as part of the car structure rather than as a load. Then add whatever extra power the batteries have.

@@francesconicoletti2547 They are going to put New batteries into current models long term for sure. Where do you think 100 GWh of Batteries goes to in 2022 (just 2 years away). 100 GWh is enough for 1 million Teslas.
You should see what Osborne Effect is, It's really interesting.

Francesco Nicoletti you keep telling yourself that. You may want to catch up with some video with sandy Munro. I was using model S because it is my favorite until the the cyber truck is available. Just because the casting isn’t being done. Does not mean they are not using the new batteries already. You are still putting Tesla in the same category as oem car makers. Tesla changes things very quickly. As Munro points out with multiple examples of this fact.
