Another coincidence is that the _Titanic's_ captain had also crashed one of her sister ships, having managed to get the RMS _Olympic_ rammed by the Royal Navy cruiser HMS _Hawke_ in 1911. In such a way that White Star had to foot the bill for repairs to both ships.
But at least the captain of the Titanic went down with the ship, instead of being the first one to dash. That was so incredibly disgusting. I'm glad he's in jail, I wish he would have gotten a longer sentence.
@@Spartanz1170 cant say this is his fault though. He young and stupid, and he is probably a poor guy who would say anything to get a decent job. People who hired him should knew better, you are hiring a helmsmen who will control a ship with a lot of people on board.
It gets worse. There's another reaction where a ship staff dude watches this part and says "sadly, this is getting more and more common nowadays". They didn't even learn their lesson from this incident.
It's more complicated than that... He at least had the baseline to even be hired. The issue is that in large ships like these, you need to be certain about the commands you give. Lots of micro adjustments are less effective for a massive ship like that one. The captain kept giving commands with different values. Also the fact that the ship takes some time to actually react to these adjustments meant that the guy had very little time to do them. So by the time maneuverer 2. was finished, the captain was issuing command 4. At least this is how I understand it. A Naval navigator officer on youtube reacted to this vid and said something along these lines. As internet historian sad, the fatal mistake was not slowing down from 16 knots. I doubt they could have swung the ship around the rocks
Until the exact moment they decided that it was too much work and threw him under the bus so hard that I should be saying they threw him under the cruise liner. Which makes it even more gross. Oh yeah mate, we got your back! Wait, this might be bad for our image? All the captains fault!

At least so many were saved that night, seeing this video reminds me of the more recent Sinking of MV Sewol a ferry ship in south korea, where over 300 passengers died 250 of those were high school juniors. Cameras arrived before rescue and you can see some students banging on the windows, as the ferry sinks. It was a horrible tragedy. Imagine all those parents, their were only 75 students left alive in that junior year most of their classmates passed away. They were told to stay in their cabins, while the captain and crew abandoned ship, and for the most part they listened leading to their deaths.
In case anyone is interested, the music that plays when the ship hits the rock is Montserrat Caballé singing the aria O Mio Babbino Caro from Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi.
im honestly surprised not a lot of people know about this ship. i knew about the disaster since it was first on the news when i was 10 years old. i even remember on the news there was some testimony from a survivor who said that a woman gave their child to them hoping to save it.
A while ago I went on a binge of cruise ships in disaster. You'd think this was a isolated incident with a bad captain but there's been 1 where a captain abandoned ship and basically a passenger on board had to take control of their own rescue efforts. As for Italian courts..... they kinda allow double jeopardy. So even some people who are found not guilty or innocent sometimes get thrown back in the courts a few times
The company ceo trying to join the bandwagon of disowning the capital was just... You let him crash a total of *three* fucking cruise ships and only now you’re putting the blame on him?
So long story short, a company cutting corners in the places that MATTERED (like hiring a competent helmsman and captain) lead to the death of over 30 people
25:12 Stop me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the reason he changed into a suit was so that he couldn't be easily identified as the captain amongst the evacuees? If so, what a scumbag.
I would recommend people also watch the Q&A where IH goes into further detail and how even though the captain ABSOLUTELY deserved jail, he was also thrown hard under the bus while others got away
One thing that pisses me off the most was that other workers were hurt or lost their lives doing what the CAPTAIN should have done. Actually saving the lives of their passengers.

When it came to refloating the ship is the fact that the ship was next to a sea cliff, and if handled incorrectly the ship could have easily slid and fall down the cliff to the bottom where the force of the impact would have damaged the tanks containing the diesel enough for the diesel to leak out it to the sea thereby destroying the habitat, and ecosystems in that area and possibly large parts of the Mediterranean Sea leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of marine life, an ruining one of the main sources of income for countries around the Mediterranean as the tropical waters and marine life are one of the main tourist attractions. It would have turned the disaster itself into a devastating ecological disaster. It's why the had to pump the diesel out before the could do anything else.

Ms Estonia* and it was 26 years ago.. still no answers and many very weird stuff going on.. last year a documentary came out where they tried to investigate.. upsetting to say the least. I am going to listen to Urmas Alender(cause his voice always comes to mind when this tragedy comes to mind), a singer who perished on the ship. His songs were related to sea and water and passing away. Some good old rock songs too with less morbid tones(the band Ruja). He was and is very beloved in Estonia. But it has always been said by the survivors that he sang in the bar when it happened. Anyway. I agree. This is not the biggest maritime disaster since Titanic. Sad to see it still does not get the right investigation it deserves. And the families of the people who died or are still lost have to deal with court dealings.. On the Swedish and Estonian sides.
Man the way chavezz comforted skitten when she cried of the deaths was so heart warming.
"It's okay, well they are not okay but you are okay" speech 25, there was an attempt but 25 can only get you so far
Man Chavezz was a real gentleman this video, caring for his wife and telling her to take as much time as she needed.
That's a real man
Internet historian ads are the best ads ever. you don't want to skip em cuz they're always entertaining
So basically hiring a Indonesian boy who was not even qualified for the job costed the lives of 35 people... Gotta love such a fine establishment.
The fact he has yet to be found is the most frustrating thing of this story.
@@redgunnit they definitely learned their lesson. Unfortunately, the lesson is "an occasional disaster costs less than hiring a good crew"
17:14 that is some final destination type shit right there, death is like "Nah fam, you're goin down"
This is the best breakdown of the shipwreck
Saddest thing is that if it hadn't been the Helmsman messing up so much, the ship would have missed the rocks with a Toyko drift style drift.
The mistake was trying to show off by doing that close sail by. They shouldn't have been doing that in the first place.
Carnival: We're throwing the captain under the bus
Captain: (already under the bus)
*shoves him under the wheels with foot*
The sickening thing about the captain and Carnival cruise lines, is that Carnival defended the captians actions to the end.
Until the exact moment they decided that it was too much work and threw him under the bus so hard that I should be saying they threw him under the cruise liner.
Which makes it even more gross. Oh yeah mate, we got your back! Wait, this might be bad for our image? All the captains fault!
16 years is "A life-time sentence" in most European courts.
Got it. That makes me feel much better lmao
@@Chavezzslovakia It's a fair enough claim... I mean imagiene spending your 20's or 30's in prison.. When you get out you have pretty much wasted the prime of your life. (And you can serve multiple life-sentences.)
Gregorio De Falco is the audience in all of this. His phone call alone is golden.
I can't believe I missed this video! As an italian myself, this whole Costa Concordia thing was incredibly upsetting when it happened and it still is. One thing's for sure, I NEVER thought I would see you guys watch our italian news intro! Lmao
Good news, the magician's assistant escaped. He opened the box as he was running from the stage
The ship crashing memes killed me evey time. I'm so simple dude🤣🤣
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who started crying when he got to the casualties.
It's just so upsetting.
Nice pfp
The Mii people are Sims from The Sims 4 just to let you know.
I think Reignbot or someone did a video on that. That was such a horrible and infuriating tragedy.
The videos the students left on their phones make it even more heartbreaking.
That explains how he ended up with a longer sentence after the last appeal.
The company ceo trying to join the bandwagon of disowning the capital was just... You let him crash a total of *three* fucking cruise ships and only now you’re putting the blame on him?
Fuck yeah time to get some snacks, sit back and enjoy watching
This was cool to watch since I was part of the crew that re-floated her...
YESSS A WHOLE ONE HOUR OF CHAVEZZ AND SKITTEN!!
Y'all are my fav reactors all bc of your chill & cool vibes ❤

So long story short, a company cutting corners in the places that MATTERED (like hiring a competent helmsman and captain) lead to the death of over 30 people
Last time I was this early I still had my will to live
Was that 3 years ago
Why are ppl so dark nowadays?
@@slim6193 You can just see it now, but school children nowadays do report anxiety levels of psychiatric patients a couple years back.

It was very brief but he did mention that the 2nd girl did escape. Before the magician dipped out he opened the latch on her box to let her out.
I especially love the use of sims in place of some of the officers
Making a meme: ”So disrespectful”
Looting a ship that 32 people just died and remain in: ”Hell yeah!”
One thing that pisses me off the most was that other workers were hurt or lost their lives doing what the CAPTAIN should have done. Actually saving the lives of their passengers.
There was note saying that the magician unlached the lock on the girl inside the box. She’s able to escape
why did i actually tear up at seeing skitten upset lmaooo
I wanted to hug her aww lol
You're not alone Skitten. I busted out in tears when I heard that baby cry
9:29 Quick clarification: drifting is controlled *oversteer*. Understeer is the opposite of that.
Oversteer = cool swinging the back out, sliding and looking awesome.
Understeer = going head first into whatever is in front of you.
This is why you don’t Tokyo Drift with any fucking vehicle.
The fact they they parbuckled that big of a ship was extremely impressive.
Parbuckled?
@@NodDisciple1 it is a way of turning a ship upright. It was done in World War II in Pearl Harbor.
As to why they had those Japanese woodcuts on board, I can't speak for the Concordia but the cruise I went on a few years ago had an art auction for one of the activities. They could have been on board for something like that.
Death penalty? Don't think that would float.

This was one of the best reactions to The Cost of Concordia...loved it!
passengers: CAPTAIN!!! Just get us to the fucking destination!
Captain: NO and NO
the book title roughly translates to "the truth overwhelmed".
IH: "...Who steals a big fuck-off bell?"
This guy: *IT'S A BIG BELL AND NOW IT'S MY DINNER BELL, WASSUP!*
Costa is Spanish for Coast. Which is why there are plenty of places in Spain (along the coast) called "Costa Brava" or "Costa del Sol" etc
ONLY 16 years for 35 deaths?
That is less than 1 year per person!?
I'd be more forgiving if this was an accident but those people may have still been alive had that clown acted sooner!
Say what you will about our sh!tty prison system but he would've gotten a hell of a lot longer in the U.S.A.
Your content is amazing alone but y'all seriously are the most wholesome couple when you guys are together doing videos lol
Idk what it is man but i just LOVE watching you and skittensays's content man!
I was always really encouraged by how emergency personnel handled this whole thing. The Coast Guard in particular. It was a terrible story, but it would have been a lot worse if they hadn't been so alert.
He is so excited about it all and she is on the edge of her seat and concerned lol
Let’s gooooo!!! This is the reaction I’ve been waiting for the most. Love you guys
What noone is talking about is the 57 bidders. Like what if someone actually paid that guy and flew to the ship to take it. Like whats he gonna say?
Buyer : I bought it online. It's mine.
Cops : uuummm... not sure thats how this works.....
Yeah the listing itself is a joke but who put up over 1k of their own money for it
The video hasn't started and I am already laughing like a mad man.
I really blame the helmsman, he should have never gotten to that position in the first place.
I blame whoever hired him
Aw, Skitten
Funny reaction of You guys. BTW the "Cockpit" on ships, is called Bridge.
27:14 It has been theorized that Schatteno was contemplating suicide btw
I don't often say this, but he should have gone through with it. The disrespect he showed by abandoning ship is beyond infuriating.
@@jesuszamora6949 Well the company who made him captain wanted to save money for themselves so it’s not entirely his fault.
@@pixelwizard9652 it is his fault, to be a capitan is to put your life last before anyone else
“It’s not about a coast!”
Well… yes, but actually no…
It’s complicated
Costa Concordia means Harmony Coast in English, so technically, Chavezz is right about the coast thing.
there was also a certain coast of giglio that the ship was intimately familiar with.
I love when u two react to internet historians. It’s amazing that I’m not the only one with these reactions.
Waiting for the next Internet Historian video, The Cost of Skitten Taking Her Hands Off the Steering Wheel. Seriously, though, thank you both for reacting to this! :-D

I cant wait to see the Q&A reaction now that its finally out. It really helps clears some information and is still pretty funny.
This whole event is the definition for what a recipe for disaster is.
I really enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing your experience of watching this for the first time.
I did not expect hearing Moldova, the place where i was born and live, to be brought into this whole thing 😭😭
There is no death penalty in Europe (not counting Belarus and Russia).
You two are just so damn sweet! I loved watching this reaction ☺️
Why did I get an ad for "colliders" the exact second the ship collided?
Finally, you two together watching my favourite internet historian video
This is a good ass video by Internet Historian, excited to see the reaction
cost of concordia wasnt the biggest disaster since titanic that was estonia concordia wasnt even near the casualties of estonia
Concordia had 30 casualties and estonia 852 but noone remembers or even know that it happened
Insane.
