  • The Tinsmith: A Craft Fading Away
During our journey through mainland Greece, we met Giannis, one of the last remaining tinsmiths. Based in Xanthi, Giannis tirelessly travels from village to village, carrying his craft with him.
His work? To coat copper cookware with tin, restoring their shine and extending their lifespan. A craft slowly disappearing with time, falling victim to the modern era and the rise of stainless steel utensils.
Yet, Giannis resists. He continues to tin baking trays, cauldrons, and pots, keeping alive a centuries-old tradition. He speaks nostalgically about the past, when the tinsmith’s trade was essential to every household.
"Copper cookware requires care," he tells us. "Without tinning, they oxidize and become dangerous to health."
Despite the decline of his profession, Giannis remains steadfast. "As long as there are copper utensils, there will be a need for tinsmiths," he declares confidently.
Indeed, Giannis’ craft continues to resonate with many. People seek out tinsmiths not only to repair their old cookware but also to preserve them as heirlooms-treasured pieces of a bygone era.
The nostalgia for the past, the appreciation for traditional craftsmanship, and the desire for authenticity give Giannis and the few remaining tinsmiths hope that their craft won’t disappear entirely. Perhaps, in the end, the tinsmith isn’t just a craftsman but also a guardian of tradition.
