Main reason for GS to grab Howard? Time. Curry, etc. are at the end of their peak. Getting Howards experience, etc. would give a way better chance of synergy and immediate impact for the next 1-3 years while everyone else is at their peak, to get a couple more rings. A new player, unless a prodigy everywhere, not just in ability, wont offer as high a probability.
Better chance of synergy? Dwight does not have the reputation as a synergy guy. He knows this for a fact, that's why he asks - why would they - from their POV.
They have plenty of experience and synergy from their current core including Iguodala. Dwight is not going to change that. They didn't even think Cousins would change that and he's already played there.
They needed him when they had wisemen
