  • Our cities hold treasure troves of architectural splendour and examples of fine stonemason's skills. Here in this video I walk around Preston city centre and explore some of this heritage, some now derelict like the St Josephs orphanage. Within the city small expanses of parks allow lunches to be taken in the sunlight and way from office desks. Preston has many churches and chapels and almost everyone of them has beautifully crafted stone carvings and you can only stand in awe of the skills involved. The Town hall and Harris Library are similarly adorned with such works of art. As film makers and photographers I feel we owe a duty to record our city scenes so future generations can look back at how our cities evolve as business needs change and how people relate to their environment.

I have owned a shop in Preston for over 20 years, and remember the controversy when the modern sculpture of martyrs was erected outside the old public hall on Lune Street. I think you have chosen some superb angles to view this sculpture from, really bring out the meance in the soldiers and the look of fear in the figures of the martyrs. I get fed up of friend and colleagues complaining about the drab architecture of Preston, when there are some real gems.

    Thank you Graham,
I was born and raised in Preston 1940 to 1958. As much as I love New Zealand I often feel very homesick for Preston. Your film has made me very nostalgic and I so enjoyed seeing the old places again. I feel very lucky and thankful that people like you take the time and effort to capture times gone by. Preston was a wonderful place to grow up in. We didn't have much in a material sense. Everybody was hard up and we had to make do with very little but we all pulled together as a community and looked out for each other. All my family and most of the people I knew growing up have either passed on or have moved away but I shall never forget those wonderful Prestonians who helped shape what I am today.

Wow you make my hometown look so amazing on camera!! You really take for granted what you see day to day, but when you exhibit the city, you bring a whole new light onto the place. I was a proud Prestonian, now I'm a PROUDER PRESTONIAN, Thank you.

Just found this Graham, great video, I come from just outside Preston, a little place called Bamber Bridge, now live in Somerset, so this brought back many memories and my goodness how some of the place has changed. Thanks for this

thank you, we often dismiss too many things in the city but there are some wonderful examples of an age where pride in craftsmanship was more important and time didn't seem to matter.

I get the feel I am there. Beautifully done. Not far from where I was born Bury, outside Manchester. All those places, Rochdale, Wigan, Ipswich, brings back so many memories. Thanks so much

@M4OON The manji is a japanese symbol however I'm not sure how this relates to the ornamental border on St Wifreds. I must do some more research! Thanks for your comments.

Hi, thanks for this comment and I agree it's a very humbling experience when you look at the amount of detail which went not only into the fabric of the building but the decoration as well. Sadly today the cost would probably be prohibitive on such types of building and so we get very uninteresting sculptures and we are made to believe they are fantastic - like the Imperial war Museum - North - pretty ugly in comparison (IMHO) Thanks for watching.

The use of the swastika which was, among other things, a symbol of long life, good health and good luck.It is NOT the same as the Nazi symbol!! It is,if you look properly, the OPPOSITE to it! Left facing, not right facing. It also was a old Irish symbol of the Celts, which over the years was transformed into the modern St Brigid’s Cross.

Preston "CITY"? council. want to pull some of the buildings down they tell us, including the magnificent bus station, all we need is turn "OUR CENTRE" into one giant housing estate and close all the magnificent buildings. They don't listen to the people!.

Awesome story of architecture. You've got a uniform, soft light, ideal for architecture. The red and lower houses remind me of the city of Amsterdam. Very good job of small TZ10, one of the best pocket-sized bed time. I just bought the samsung ex1, ideal for landscape and architecture. If you want to check my gallery on Flickr.

But why the asinine "music"? Why not the sounds of the streets? Or silence would be better.
