Wood will accelerate the burning of the coals so be ready to add some more coals after it ignites (if your cooking for a while). I agree about using chunks, they're easier to manage. You can use "log" splits but I suggest splitting them into "sticks" and adding a few at a time. And if you go that route you will need to add more coal too because that will accelerate the heat.

What if I soak the wood in water first?
Soaking your wood chunks does not increase burn time or produce more smoke.
