SP-808: Chopping the 'Amen-Break'

- A viewer (bourgeoiscaesar) asked me how to chop samples and not just an unknown sample...no....he asked for the most famous 6-seconds drum break, the Amen-break. You will see it being sampled and chopped in this short tutorial.
You will learn how to chop it in two different ways, manually and with the clipboard.
Also you will learn how to create mute-groups, to put the samples to 'drum'-style and to set the general tempo to the sample's BPM to create time synced delays.

Hey Roger, are you able to use the sp808 wave converter software with modern operating systems? I'm thinking about picking up a zip disc usb reader, but don't want one if I can't use it with my sp808.

The wav-converter will work with Mac when you can install WINE.
With windows I don’t have experience at this moment.
If the price is ok then I would buy the usb reader. Then you will be able to make backups.

Try the Track-to-Pad function. With this feature you will never have the Zip-Drive error.

Amen brother! Apparently the Winstons hsve gotten no money from sampling of this break
I thought I read somewhere that family received an amount of money. But man...who would have known that this would be one of the most sampled drum breaks.
im looking to buy this but im wondering how you sampled this from your computer?

how hard is the learning curve for the sp-808 would you say? thinking of getting one as the grooveboxaddict i am!
We Island good and difficult question.
I bought mine in middle 2017.
I noticed that my knowledge about beats/bpm helped me and that the SP-808 super logical is.
My advice when exploring is decide which part you want to discover because it offers a sampler, an effect machine, a synth, a step modulator and of course a multi track recorder for internal AND external usages.
90% of the users complain about the Zip drive. But it also it’s charm IMO.
It settles that area when Zip was hot.
Don’t get overwhelmed about the possibilities. Step by step and for sure you have your first results in a day. Just sample looping with the track to pad mode is already cool.
Do you have a PC + external USB Zip drive? Use the application to move your favourite wav-files to the disk and the fun can begin.

Acabo de ver este mensaje. Yo también tenía una unidad que rechazo discos. Pero cuando puse mis dedos para no rechazarlo, el disco se quedó adentro y el SP-808 empezó a leer el disco. Que pasó, una capa del lector estaba rota y por eso el disco no se quedó adentro. Utilicé loctite para poner todo en su sitio y ahora funciona. A ver si tu también puedes esforzar el disco quedarse adentro. Salu2!

Well...both are samplers but with a totally different workflow.
I had the SP404A but couldn’t work with it. But on YT I see people doing incredible stuff with it.
I’m more old school, I guess...😅
