Julian Chee Yie Jian: Paper Airplane Distance Record Test (February - April 2019)

It’s extremely difficult to trim. The hardest thing is to get the glider to fly relatively straight at both high and low speeds. Often times, the airplane glides at its cruise speed but the launch at high velocity causes the glider to roll violently or pitch down. My guess it’s aeroelasticity doing it’s magic, shifting the static margin.
It is ultimately a game of balance. The climb has to be perfect, and the plane has to glide at the last third of the flight. This is extremely difficult because in order to get a glide, you need to bend the trailing edge of the wing (elevator) upwards. But if you bend it up too much, the climb will be too steep causing you to lose a lot of initial distance. If you bend it too little, the climb might be just right but you're not gonna have pitching moment to recover and glide in the last third.

how much in grams did the plane weigh?

It maybe 100gsm. Like a suzzane. It is the heaviest setting that guiness allows.

100 g/m2 x 0.06327m2 = 6.237 g

@@julianchee2894 not all 100gsm weighs the same. The brand i use weighs 6.4 grams. The brand redbull gave us weighed 6.6 grams. Did you measure your brand?

​@@jayson5674 If I recalled, they vary by +- .4. The weight matters only to a certain degree. If you're talking .1 grams, it won't matter unless you can replicate the exact throw in the exact conditions with the exact flaws on the plane. And if you're hand throwing a paper airplane and having it slightly damaged after every throw, that's never going to happen. You're basically splitting hairs at that point. Heck, what environment you folded it in and where it goes will influence it's mass. It's like a sponge. I forgot the exact type I used but it was some form of Conqueror / Navigator / DoubleA paper.

@@julianchee2894 youre preaching to the choir. Every little bit helps. Even the print on the paper. I was wondering if you had a better type of paper than i do. I used navigator then i switched to another type of navigator paper and it increased the distance by about 5 to 10 feet, but thats the black knight. It has a very high flight envelope and the inertia will increase at a higher rate than a glider will. Thats not to say it flies like a projectile it flies like a glider sort of. Its a unique aircraft. If you have time take a look at my channel.

The Suzanne has a lower wing loading. My wing area is smaller hence the flight isn’t as long. But the distance is similar ;)
