This is a really nice interview. I'm sorry that a pivotal part of this conversation was lost and wasn't picked back up!! At 18:41 the interviewer asks, "Is it possible for black people, or people of color, to formulate visions of the future that are both liberating and purposeful?" Octavia responds "Of course" , I don't even know what else to say about that, I mean, WE BETTER!! Judy Dash..."Well, given the present situation of people of color around the world, shouldn't we be more concerned with dealing with the problems of the present rather than the future?" Octavia Butler....Well, if that's what we do, then we'll go on having some pretty nasty problems in the future". After which, tells the story of a friend of hers who doesn't want her kid to learn Spanish in school....Here is where it gets cut off, but essentially she says something that I think many of us NEED to hear today, which is that we cannot continue to think small, or from a place of lack, because when we do, we do ourselves "a lot of harm"....we MUST begin to vision more in the future. A much better one, and then make it happen.

This woman was a truth teller , ahead of her time , not bc of insight alone...but bc of her curious mind and honest inquiry into the state of the world.

Thank you so much for this upload! I have been immersing myself in Ms Butler's work for months now.. I had been meaning to read her for years but as I'm not a big science fiction fan, i was afraid to not like her books but it's so much more than "science fiction"....Kindred and the Parable series are now in my top 10! I couldn't put them down...I'm also starting Bloodchild, one of her collections of short stories...Rest in Peace Ms Butler and thank you!♥️🙏🏾

i really like the Bloodchild collection.. what was your favorite story from there? Mine was either Duryea-Goda disease or the one where they lost their ability to speak…

@@willfeenthe one where the characters lost their ability to speak is my favorite too. I haven't read her in a few months because I was immersed in the work of other writers but I have to get back to her world very soon. I miss her world.

Does anyone know where I can access a transcript of this interview? Maybe it's because I have a processing disorder but I genuinely cannot understand most of it.

The “hhmmm” at 21:09 😂. Octavia was too cultured to say that sounds like a bunch of hogwash.
