Chris responds to mean comments left by viewers!
My opinion: your guitar breakdowns are the most valuable service that guitarists can ask for on youtube. Especially since every other review is sponsored by guitar manufacturers these days, and often the content creator has to send the guitar back in pristine condition. Keep up the awesome work!!
If they hacksawed a pre-war Martin= 1m subs easy and endless arguments in the comment section
@@dontdoit6986 I don't know about that! Tarantino Destroyed a 1870 Parlor Martin on loan, and the film was a blast! hahaha
This has become one of my favorite channels. You guys have good chemistry. Its such fun to watch!, Thanks guys and best wishes!
I really enjoy the break down videos and hope you continue to do more. Hopefully it will catch traction enough to hold the bigger companies accountable for the products they offer.
You guys have been doing a great job. Keep it up! As an acoustic guitar player, I love learning more about this stuff
I realize this is an older vid but I really enjoy you guys. The laid-back atmosphere in the shop yet, amount of care and precision in your builds do inspire. Your attitudes towards teaching your technics are very refreshing. You guys take some of the "mystery" out of guitar building and make it fun.
Your breakdown videos are, in my mind, an absolute necessary thing. It helps us ignorant hopefuls become informed hopefuls and prevent us from making tons of unnecessary purchases, especially in this age of internet buying.
Love the breakdown videos I really hope you do more
Not long discovered your channel and it's awesome . The craftsmanship is second to none
I really appreciate they guitar reviews. A guitar is like a screwdriver: when it works great, when it starts slipping replace it. I've been a pro for 40 years. If people would put half the time they spend anthropomorphizing guitars into practice, they would play much better.
My wife owns a company that does editing and proofreading. Now you know why they don't let me work there
This is not the point. It is about the destruction of something that is totally unnecessary
@@stephengent9974 it is necessary really to show us the people what to watch out for
@@stephengent9974 lots of things get destroyed in the pursuit of research!! So whats your point?
I love your guitar breakdown, tools & techniques and build videos! Actually, come to think of it, I have found most of your videos really benificial as someone (unfortunately) in the market for a factory guitar and someone who has a growing interest in luthiery. Thank you for your inspiration and encouragement!
I'd love to see you guys engineer a way to glue a few of those guitars back together just to see how much of its tone and playability comes back...That would be cool as hell...
This is great to see you both laughing at mean comments. Well done. I get a lot out of your videos. I always learn something. For 2 guys who don't produce video's for your main gig they're fine.
Chris: I enjoy your channel very much. Keep it going. I have gained a lot of knowledge on guitar building from your channel- both from your discussion and by watching your processes. The breakdown videos are terrific and provide a valuable service. My brother was a working electric guitar musician inJacksonville beach Fla and always need durable coupled with great sound.
You make a very interesting point that the build quality and sound are a reflection of your talents while you use your talents to make a meaningful statement for your customer through inlay. Two suggestions: 1) bring out a jazz guitar. I see that you build them maybe you can show off that model. 2) Also go back to that guitar in your first video with no audio, play the guitar and compare and contrast it to your current model. Good interaction between you and Matt is fun and entertaining too.
While I must admit, when I first watched the PRS breakdown video my initial reaction (in my head) was "noooooo!". That said, I completely understand and support the concept behind the video series and appreciate the resulting information. I do still wince a bit when the drop test is done. Brings back some bad memories over my 33 years of gigging. Thanks for allo the great content.
You are a great Luther, thank you for all you do, my God man never ever second guess your self, thank you brother for all that you do. Still saving see you in the future brother.
Just finishing my 3rd guitar. Love your content and appreciate your channel.
Please don’t stop your videos!! You are informative And entertaining!!! It’s nice to watch a video with guys smiling and being happy with what they are doing!!! The learning experience is worth the cutting of guitars!!!
The breakdowns are basically “Doug Demuro videos.” They look past the well-known badges, the shiny chrome, the plastic body parts - they tell you all the details the manufacturers try to hide behind all that sparkle. THANK YOU! Never, ever stop!
Love me some Doug!
The guitar breakdowns are a great idea and I hope the series continues. I wouldn't be surprised if the angry comments on those are from manufacturers upset they're being exposed.
Love you two guys ... highly entertaining and informative channel. I can't glue an envelope closed without messing it up so I mostly watch just to see two highly skilled guys do their thing. I'm a relatively new subscriber and slowly working my way through you video catalog and if you ever see a mean comment from me it will be for entertainment purposes only.
As you guys already know, you're not gonna please everyone. Fun video. I'd just like to echo what Corey said below: you truly ARE providing a valuable service to guitar players with the breakdown videos. No sponsored content (Phil Mcknight does this, respect; and there's so many youtubers who won't say a single bad word about the guitar they are reviewing...a certain cat outta Canada comes to mind), and being able to see inside the guitar...utterly fascinating. I love it. And I thought your "soundboard" video was amazing. I know you can't give away how you voice the braces, but any video discussing the soundboard and bracing are extremely valuable to your audience. People don't know about all the corners these companies are cutting. And seeing dried glue and gaps inside the guitar really holds these guitar makers accountable. It was an eye opener for me, even thought I've been playing guitars for 25 years. The truth matters, so I just thank you gentlemen for what you're doing.
By the way, the songwriter guitar sounded like a piano almost! Just amazing. I'll never be able to afford such a piece of art, but it's awesome to know that small shops like you guys are turning out masterpieces. Cheers.
Matt: It’s not like you actually made it on a keyboard. Chris: I actually composed that. Me: dying laughing 🤣
Strange sense of humor.
You guys provide such valuable info. I appreciate it an hope more folks will too. Please keep up the great work!!
I would love to see more of the breakdown videos. I've learned so much about acoustic guitars from those videos.
Cutting your first guitar got me my first view of your channel, Clickbait works! I thought, "now that is commitment". Subscribed on the spot. Exposing the inside to the light of day shows if the craftsmanship follows through the instrument in a way no other can. Please continue, and keep up the good work!
You guys have been doing a great job. Keep it up! As a luthier student , I'm learning soooo much from you Chris... you are a great luthier
Honesty trumps brand name! It is what it is. Thank you well said. Love your work & comments. I am an amateur builder & understood exactly the point your putting across. Keep up the great topics on the true meaning of craftsmanship & what’s in a name. I am guessing that the Gibson your grand daddy had is not the same one that is being built today. Victor from Canada,
keep it up guys! your channel is pretty much the only channel I've been watching all week so I catch up
I love this channel. It's very entertaining. I don't know why Chris doesn't want a "This Old House" opener considering how much he looks like the Bob Vila of luthiers. At least Chris has a sense of humor! I'm not sure Vila does...
This channel is awesome! I love the breakdown series, and look forward to seeing more of those videos and the other stuff.
Hi Chris & Matt: I only subscribed to your channel 3 weeks ago. I really enjoy the content, the quality of your work and your videos. I am not a huge fan of TH-cam trolls. I really dislike that people have to criticize an upstanding person. You are clearly very good at your trade and it shines through. I am envious of your skill and I know you worked very hard to get where you are. Please keep the videos coming. You are an inspiration to me and all future builders.
Love yalls work and videos. I watch them while I practice in the mornings. Thank you both.
Obsessed with guitars and I'm brand loyal, but also quality loyal. Good to know someone puts in the work to cater to the guitar communities best interest first.
Do one on the funniest comments. That could be entertaining. Really glad you're not letting this hate stuff getting you down. Can't wait for the next driftwood concert. Any chance of a forum to suggest songs for you to cover, or even...wait for it, write and submit a song for you two to play?
So as a Floridian, what pack of strings do hold up the best down here?
DeMuro and Project Farm are two of my favorites...and I don't blame you for trying to emulate what they do with your breakdown series. Just keep up the good work...and have fun doing it!
Project farm is great
Keep the videos coming guys! You are fantastic! I've only been building guitars (classical) for 5 years and I'm now on number 7 (I'm very slow). I've learnt loads of useful tips from your videos and screw the comments.
Gotta say I really dig this channel. I've been working on my first for a little while now- between you and Eric Schaefer, it's been really dang insightful how I approach it
Well... this video made me a subscriber. And yes, I have to admit I could not clic on any breakdown video.
... but I will eventually.
Keep the videos coming, I'll keep watching.
I’m going through withdrawals from the guitar breakdown! I’m afraid if I don’t see one soon I’m about to cut all of mine up! I’m losing all hope for the future!
You guys rock! Just ignore impolite negative comments and continuous doing this great job you are doing.
Hey guys, just found the two of you recently and really enjoy the way you two play off of each other and the professionalism I see in Chris's work!! I must admit that never having built a guitar and spending the families hard earned money to buy the number that I have, it's difficult to watch one being put to the guillotine, but Ferrari breaks down engines that are worth north of $700,000.00 and it's done in the vein of demonstration. I wipe away my tears and mutter..."all in the name of Science."
This video begs the question " Why do haters hate?" Please keep up the great work. I enjoy the diversity in your channel. The videos are not cookie cutter by any means. I retired recently, and yours and other videos, have been a great source of information as I begin my post retirement hobby of repairing and hopefully making instruments. Thanks guys!
That was fun. It also provided some insight into what you do and why. Keep up the good work. By the way, I love the “breakdown” videos.
The guitar breakdowns sometimes hurt to watch, but they are super helpful. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and have already learned a lot. For example, thanks to you guys, the Taylor Academy 12 Grand Concert has been moved to the top of my shopping list (because I need a decent acoustic to move up to) and certain other acoustics have been taken off the list entirely.
Also, I would have never guessed your inspirations to be DeMuro and Project Farm. But now that you mentioned it, I see it. Aesthetically, however, your production values are much higher than theirs, imo. I was especially taken with one of your videos showing the making it a guitar. It was truly cinematic.
Well done, guys, and thanks for the hard work.
Generally speaking, dealing with people is so toxic.
This was a great and hilarious video! You guys do excellent work.
Wish I'd seen your videos before starting to build acoustic guitars. I've not disagreed with anything you have done/said even though I do some things differently. I am interested in hearing your ideas and observations on trends in customer preferences. What's selling? Models, woods, features, etc. Thanks!
I like you guys setup videos and i'm inspired to learn more from you.
I didn't know you guys read comments!
It'd be really nice if you could compare pros and cons of your handmade guitars and Martin/Taylor top end guitars (specific body shape and similar tone woods, my preference OOO)!
Biggest challenge I faced recently was to understand how to know if an acoustic guitar is sounding good. What are the parameters for the sound to be good or better than the rest.
What is more important - good sound or good playability?
Can a good sounding (might be expensive) hand made guitar be robust as well? How?
If you put carbon fibre reinforcement in guitar neck how does the truss rod add relief to the neck afterwards? According to my knowledge truss rod is not strong enough to bend carbon fibre rods!
God forbid, a healthy approach to dealing with criticism. Enjoy the channel, the guitars, expertise / new ideas and all the fun quirks. Look forward to more.
I love that the breakdown series is going to be stacked up like a Top Gear racetrack lap time leaderboard!
The guitar break down is awesome. Had me snooping inside my Mid 70's yamaha FG 165s and Morgan (Orangewood).
Hey guys, I have all the respect in the world for any luthier and my comment is about why I think there are so many mean comments. The thumbnails of your factory tours at first glance give the impression that you are scoffing at the manufacturers which makes it look like you think that you are better than all of them. I know that is not the case because I have taken the time to watch the whole videos and most people don't. Again, that's just what I think! Love your vids, keep up the good work! 🎸
For me the guitar breakdown concept if for you guys to educate the vast majority of people who loves a particular brand/model and somehow making us realize should I’d be paying that much given that sound + build quality.
I watched your building a 3000 year old guitar and through that video Chris was able to build his credibility to me as a guitar builder to give his feedback to those broken down guitars based on his experience and knowledge.
Awesome content Chris & Matt! Keep it up!
I think this may be the most awkwardly worded "compliment?" ever written. Fascinating.
The cutting of the guitar seemed a bit jarring to me as well, and I think that's a natural first reaction of every musician/guitar enthusiast, but in the context of comprehensive reviews that you provide, I believe it has a lot of value. For every guitar you cut to provide the customers with valuable information, there are likely thousands upon thousands destroyed by malice and/or neglect (guitar bought for a spoiled kid and hundreds of other different possible scenarios).
BTW is there any chance you could make a review of Cort Core? I know you get plenty of those requests, and they probably all seem arbitrary (people just name guitars they own or are interested in buying) but I think it's an objectively interesting example. Cort Core is near the top of the range of a more 'budget' brand, and it offers an all solid-wood construction for not a lot of money. It seems like one of the greatest 'bang for the buck' options out there, and I wonder if your review would confirm or disprove that.
Your doing great job.looking forward to the higher end guitars being put through the mill.
I don't have much trouble with umms, but, you know, the you knows are dragging me down. I hear myself in conversation, tell myself, "stop saying you know" and, you know, totally can't stop;)
People just need something to bitch about. For some reason, many people have a need to tear things and other people down to make them feel superior. So don't take any of their idiocy to heart. Your videos fill a much needed niche and are fun to watch while providing knowledge.
I just recently saw that early video of you time lapsing the build of a guitar in an hour. I was thinking to myself how truly amazing it was to watch. Hard to believe that anyone had a complaint about that video. 🤷♂️
I love this channel! Chris and Matt do a great job with the videos AND their guitars are amazing! If I could get within 5% of their quality I would be very happy. The videos will help me get closer! 🙂
Hi Chris/Mat:
I've watched the Cocobolo build from ep 1 to ep 20 is their going to be more ?I found it fun and watching how a guitar should be made is great.
Don
You guys crack me up. More please.
Making negative comments about your guitars and insinuating a sub-standard tone as a trade-off for beautiful inlays, or comparing your work to mass-production (ie: McDonald's) is like saying that the paint job on a Rolls-Royce must be compensating for the quality of its underlying craftsmanship, or comparing your Italian Grandmothers Spaghetti Sauce to a jar of Ragu. These people crack me up! You guys are so real and so much fun to watch. The intensity I've seen in the smallest details of your builds is what separates you from the masses. I've never played one of your instruments but because of this channel, I want to! Keep them coming guys. Thanks for all you (both) do!
I wish my fiend had seen you cutting up guitars before he went out and bought his acoustic. It's a well known (Korean) make and the bracing wasn't cut into the lining, he dropped it lightly and the soundboard cracked. I think you give info that's worth considering.
You build a $1,500 acoustic dreadnought and test it
Hey Guys
I’m new to your channel. I think you guys are great. You say “um” all you want. I’ve learned so much. I’ve watched for 6 hours so far.
Thx for not being d***s.
There are already enough. Best!!!
I’m so glad I haven’t clicked on the building a guitar in an hour video. I would have been ticked listening to stock piano music rather than your guitar at the end. LOL
Fun video here!
That unfinished piece sitting precariously close the the edge of the bench behind is spooking me. Lol
Hahaha
It looks like an ancient sitka piece!!
Whatever it is, it's too close to the edge.
ITS LITERALLY ON THE EDGE OF THE BEVEL!
Of all of these comments. The only one I can relate to, is the one made about the ‘build an acoustic guitar in one hour’. 🤦♂️ Other than that I truly enjoy everything else you guys do here. You’re a true craftsman and put out some guitars that are amazing in every aspect. Don’t change a thing.
How about an episode when you`re gluing the guitars back? Maybe you can make it into a lesson for reusing tops and backs?
The Break Down video of the Gibson G-45 was the first video from your channel dished to me by the YT algorithm yesterday. At first I'm thinking "No way. They're going to do that? This is going to be painful to watch. Then again, it's not my money spent and wasteful." At the end of the video I'm happy I'm now not going to spend $1200 on junk and "they're providing an invaluable service."
Edit: AHA! I subscribe to Doug & Project Farm as well... and there's a channel on shoe/boot dissection I've watched in the past. I think I'm figuring out the YT correlations in their algorithm. I also subscribe to a bunch of guitar makers/reviews/players channels too which of course makes it not totally "out there" in suggesting your channel.
Hey guys, I’m real new to your channel. Really liked your acoustic breakdowns, I watched the Taylor, Gibson ( new ones G-something ) and the PRS. I was actually thinking about buying one of the Gibsons as a couch / travel guitar until I watched it, very cool thanks. 🤙
The breakdown videos are great. I'm just sad that you started with "budget" guitars that are already outside of my price range. I'd really love to see some guitars from the $200 to $400 range or even lower just to see how the quality really changes over the different price ranges, and where you start seeing the diminishing return on investment. Based on that mid-range Gibson (which sounds like you were referencing in this video), I can't imagine the $200 to $400 range being much worse, if at all. For that low range, seeing an additional cut-through for a cross-section of the front and back panels would be nice too, to see if they're actually solid wood or not (and what it means to not be solid wood). Maybe that cut could come from the top bout (sp?), where a cutout to reach the fingerboard would go. No bracing to get in the way there, and also wouldn't totally ruin the cool cross-section look for seeing all the bracing.
Why wood anyone leave you nasty comments? I really don’t understand it. This is the first of your videos I’ve watched. Thanks mate.
The fit and finish and overall beauty of the guitar reflects your craftsmanship and attention to detail. This should be reflected in the sound of the instrument.
This was fun. But I regret that you have to deal with irrelevant and hostile comments. It seems there are always trolls on every channel who build themselves up by tearing others down, and likely take no risks otherwise. Glad you can roll with it and keep going. Your content is very interesting. Thanks for the work you do.
I would appreciate a short video on sounding the body, great walk thru what you do and I feel it was a great video.Thank you for showing ppl the failure of big makers quality shortcomings that's why I see them as less than 60s Kays
I've really been enjoying your videos, both in content and presentation. I'm glad you can keep a sense of humor about negative comments, because they will always happen, no matter what you post. Allow me to pass on some gold advice that my wife taught me: "Just because someone throws it, it doesn't mean you have to catch it." Keep up the great work.
😂 The end comments make me think of 60 Cycle Hum channel. "Like, Subscribe, leave rude and nasty comments..." Sometimes he'll even pin particularly rude comments. Reading the other viewers pile on in defense or agreement is pretty fun.
And I also liked Chris's comment: "Who hurt you?" 😂
I think y’all are doing great. Keep doing what you love.
I love this channel more with every post 😀 keep up the excellent work!
Love your review on the Gibson 45g. I think it will force the major guitar builders to be more aware of QC.
Or not.?🤣
@@pmscalisi true
Please continue to do the breakdown videos. It gives ordinary people the opportunity to see how "sloppy" some presumably high end guitars actually are. In fact, I would love to see a hand-built/custom built breakdown series from custom builders around the country. It would be interesting to compare their standards to yours (might even give you some ideas). I know factories cut corners but I have also seen some premium priced custom built guitars have corners cut. Perhaps a series like that could help up the standards?
I love the old intro it give off a good hype feeling. Also, I suggest alcohol involved in the next mean comments video. That will make content! Love your guys videos. Keep up the good work.
This is a great video. There are so many haters out there. You are stepping on a lot of toes when you criticize the big guys......keep up the great work. I love your open minded viewpoints I don't always agree but enjoy the honesty.
I'm thankful that I have better things to do than just sitting around ragging on TH-cam creators.
The sound board vid was excellent. Really informative
Love your channel. Dont take the comments too personal. Some people are just nasty and have nothing better to do with their lives. I know you guys are rolling with it but i know it can sting sometimes...
Great video
Perhaps there is an opportunity for you demonstrate how you might make an improvement to the guitar and put it back together. I appreciate that this is a lot of work but perhaps they can be sold on.
It would be instructive to see how much work goes into a good repair and you may be able to demonstrate a sonic improvement or explain how the changes work. Best wishes
I'm really disappointed that there aren't any mean comments here, below your video of mean comments.
To respond to the video, though, I remember as a kid watching the Letterman show where he would go on top of a several story tall building and drop bowling balls on things. As an example one night he had a tv plugged in below and said something like 'the ABC late night show is cancelled!' as he dropped the bowling ball 3 or 4 floors into the tv screen. I say all that just to suggest a second method of opening up acoustic guitars you buy.
Love your channel. Don't take the haters to heart.
Others have done video about mean comments. Yep, but really in this case, your video is more of entertainment and really not doing damage control of the mean comments. Good video.
Hey guys, love this channel love what you guys are doing and I actually have really enjoyed pretty much every video you put out. My favorites are when you cut the guitars in half because as a guitar consumer I want to know what I’m buying before I pay for it.
Chris and Matt,
Really enjoy your channel! As a professional luthier myself for almost 30 years, I am always trying to learn new ways to do things and I really like how you teach and explain things. Keep it up!!! By the way, what size finger plane do you use? Thanks for the laughs! Bye the way, your guitars are beautiful…. Guess they don’t sound good!
YES, more videos like this please guys 👍
How about a nice comment: I started watching your videos because I was bored and now I'm finishing up my first tenor ukulele. Thank you.
Damn man! That’s so cool. You’ll love it.
not likely it will matters but i'm obliged to say i love all those videos and i think they really provide values to human-guitar evolution. So far the most engineering i had done on the guitar previously was to change strings and soldering some pickup on/off electric. But i'm finding myself much more educated in terms of guitar building/repairing/structure/timber material/tools that i had never imagined and it open my eyes. I'm really more inclined to and ready to messed up my own guitar now.
My Golf Spy cuts all kinds of golf balls in half to show bad quality. It really ticked off Callaway but also forced them to invest in their manufacturing process and have better quality. Cutting acoustics in half should force guitar companies to improve quality now that the cat is out of the bag. Really appreciate you guys doing this and I now know to stay away from an X Series Martin. Was on the fence about getting one.
The videos where you cut the guitar in half are awesome. I love how people think they have a right to tell people what they can do with their own property. Shaddup!
