umm if NASA didn't get their funding slashed post Apollo we would already have bases on every planet, full blown cities on the moon and mars, only the entire solar system is not ambitious enough, if we want to guarantee our survival as a species then we would need to expand into multiple solar systems, eventually much of the milky way and even parts of andromeda and the other smaller galaxies in the local group.

The Salyut stations were originally a military program; after it became clear that the Americans would beat the Soviets to the Moon, there was basically a crash program to turn Salyut into a civilian program and say "look at this! We weren't racing, this was our goal all the time! Silly Americans and their posturing."
Yeah that part really chokes me up. She paid tribute not merely to the three that rode that rocket, to all the people whose 12 years of labor, sweat, toil, and love built the rockets. The capsules. The lander. The computers. It may have even been more than 10,000 if we include the entire supply chain from extraction to manufacture to assembly.
