In 2008, Barack Obama was the change candidate. This is a data-driven look at how much America transformed during his eight years as our President. Pause or rewind the video if you need more time with any of the data.
After spiking during the Great Recession, the unemployment rate is below 5% today.
And the stock market has more than doubled.
Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, plunged the percentage of adults without health insurance to the lowest level in history.
While the share of income going to the top 1% has continued to increase, average Americans saw the biggest jump in their household income ever in 2015, and the biggest drop in poverty since the great society programs of the 1960’s.
The violent crime rate is down almost 20% from when Obama took office.
America’s image abroad was lifted as President Obama turned away from the policies of George W. Bush and toward a more active pursuit of diplomacy to solve problems.
Today, there are less than 15,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, compared to the 175,000 when he took office.
But this was coupled with Americans themselves becoming more wary of international engagement.
On energy, the Obama administration has reduced carbon emissions by 9.4%, greatly expanded wind and solar power, and cut America’s dependence on foreign oil by more than half.
In 2015, for the first time since at least 1980, the number of inmates in federal prisons actually declined.
8 states have now legalized marijuana and - for first time - a majority of Americans overall support legalization.
A majority of Americans also favor the Supreme Court’s ruling that essentially legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
Culturally, the biggest change came when Apple released the first iPhone during Obama’s campaign for the democratic nomination in 2007. In the decade since, smartphone use has exploded and about half of all Americans now own a tablet too.
But all that technology has led to a constant stream of stories and images of violence and victimization, especially at the hands of police, seen all over the social media feeds of many Americans, that’s led to a widespread perception that race relations have deteriorated.
Millennials are now the nation’s largest living generation and the biggest potential voting block.
For the first time in 2013, the majority of newborn babies were racial or ethnic minorities, and a record-high 12% of newlyweds married someone of a different race.
Despite some people’s perception, the past seven years has seen little change in the number of unauthorized immigrants living in the United States, there was actually a net loss of over 100,000 immigrants who went back to Mexico.
The biggest religious trend during Obama’s presidency is the rise of those claiming no religion at all--a group now making up a quarter of the population, and 35% of millennials.
As you can see from President Obama’s approval ratings among democrats and republicans, modern America has never been so divided along partisan lines.
Far more democrats than republicans now say immigrants strengthen the country; and when it comes to guns, far more republicans now think we should prioritize gun rights over gun control.
For various reasons, both democrats and republicans have much less faith in government. Most Americans didn’t think the government’s actions after the financial crisis helped them.
On national security, after the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, for the first time since 9/11, the government’s job rating on terrorism turned negative.
And, driven by the campaign of Donald Trump, Republicans have suddenly become anti-free trade and globalization. As you can see, Democrats’ views have remained roughly the same.
Only one-third of Americans used social media in 2008, but by 2015 that rate was 75%.
Obama was also the first Internet video president, as this media genre came of age during his time in office. TH-cam now has over a billion users.
In 2016, more American adults learned about the presidential election through social media than through print newspapers, with seven-in-ten getting their news through a mobile device.

*Its biased*. You introduced his successes (which I agree with) and failed to show his flaws. That's what I hate about TDC and modern media. They show only one side of the picture. Examples: corruption massively increased, US is bombing currently 7 countries, US is a part of the genocide in Yemen, because its sponsoring and sending weapons to Saudis and Qatar. US destabilized Libya, not to mention Syria. You didnt mention decline in way of life *regionally*. Poor people from middle America states got poorer, lost their jobs. Of course if you are counting California and New York you gonna have increase overall. *Bias*. Drugs and pharmaceutics got insanely expensive.

The media is your worst enemy, not Trump. Even now they act like Obama is still the president. Isn't it funny how they paint him as charismatic and great when as the first Black president he did nothing for Black people?
He even said it was nearly impossible to fix some issues in the black community although Trump put out prison reform which helped black men get jobs instead of going back to a lifestyle of selling drugs and more illegal activity.
Do you know what the main problem is in the black community? Fatherlessness. With that prison reform, more fathers can actually be the pillar of the family and work for their kids.
All this, Nd 90% of college kids and young adults think Trump is a racist.
I don't think he's the best personally, I think that if he was younger then he would be the perfect president, but just because someone isn't perfect, doesn't mean that you should make him seem like the worst person on earth.

Passing policies is something all presidents do, but people know the difference between a president doing because they actually care and one doing because they want to look better
People consider trump a racist because idk, using racist language and building a campaign on keeping our immigrants.
We call him the worst because we don’t see good in him. Yes, Obama did little for the black community, but he had some type of care for minorities that was genuine since he is one himself. Trump may not be the absolute worst, but doing simple things doesn’t change character

Real deal u may say that but u don’t even bother to understand why Obama wasn’t able to do most of what he promised. I’m willing to explain it to you but are you willing to read what I have to say. Probably not. And idk what race u r but I’m assuming white bc of what u said about Obama. As for me u can say I’m black and white bc I have white skin and black hair. But actually I’m Asian. And just to let u k the elderly traditional Asian ALL hate black ppl no matter who they no matter how rich are. Ik this bc that is how my parents are one of my aunts are and mostly definitely my grandmother is. But I still love her at least. There were days when I asked them all how would they feel if I married other races. Especially black ppl and boy were they pisst. Just by me having to ask this simple question. Pretty much how senator sessions Paul Ryan and McConnell were so pisst when a black person became president they did everything they could to stop Obama from doing all that he promised. And how may that have been possible u may ask. Bc the right wing had power over both parties at the time. So the democrats couldn’t have much to say. Republicans were basically playing dirty. Dirtier then how a black person may look just bc his skin is darker. And if you bother to tell me that I am completely wrong about this with all that Trump is doing right now, would they let him if he was actually black?

Obama made nearly everything better, yet Trump saw "so much wrong" with what he was doing. Under Trump everything is back to where it was. In Obama's State of the Union adress he said "I can confidently say that the state if our union is the best it has ever been." Trump can't honestly say that. However he did say it in his last speech where everything he said was totally or partially incorrect.

Joe Sharpe we don't but the Democrats do it everytime. Our comments are based on fact and if you'd bother to do some research on topics then right before your very eyes you would see exactly what Obama did to America and how he is being rated as the worst president in our history. He allowed illegals into the US and issued each adult a new social security number and registered them to vote in both state and national elections. But you'd probably call that illegal voter registration "perfectly legal" and also allowed over 3 million Muslim refugees into America being flown in at night and bussed to many small towns across America. Google all this. And why do you stick up for a prior president who did nothing at all to help the black race? When he won his very first term, many of my friends who are African American claimed to no one in particular " that we're finally going to get a piece of the pie"! Well did you or any of your race finally get a piece of the pie, in 8 years?

I love these FACTS and it helps to use graphs to show the change. I start at 2007 to show how the economy was tanking when O took over, and how quickly it changed- late 2009. From there steady growth.
Why doesn’t mainstream media do this?

Siq Madiq yea if you just ignore the statistics out of childish jealousy. I know you like your presidents to bankrupt the country. Obama was handed the worst recession since the great depression and turned the country around. Most people with health insurance in the history of our country. Saved the auto industry. Forced predatory lenders to stop scamming people. Helped with student loans. Created an agency to help regular people fight against corrupt banking practices. The crime rate went down. I could go on and on about the great things Obama accomplished. But you keep on living in fantasy land where none of it is real.

Unemployment officially went down because of part-time jobs - over 90% of new jobs were part time (but still jobs, right? so it's good for stats!).
Health insurance: yeah duh, because people are penalized if they don't sign up for something many would be getting cheaper without the ACA.
A thing Obama excelled at: number of bombs dropped (where is that number?) and of course the best of all:
*He increased the national debt by amounts unseen before*

To be fair, the treasury secretary laughed when one brought up the debt. No one in the position looks at that, they look at the deficit. If you're in surplus, you can pay it off which hasn't happened since CLinton's last year. Obama cut the deficit in half.

133col Obama actually added 10 trillion more dollars to the debt from George Bush's 10 trillion and Trump's tax plan is expected for the U.S to add 10 trillion more dollars to the debt. Plus, when you are trying to get a country out of a Great Recession, it is gonna take a lot of money to do so. Like when far took office in the Great Depression he had to use a lot of government money

I am a bit tired and I misread you. So GWB added $5.8 trillion, not 10. About Trump's tax plan: tell me, how it's going to add another $10 trillion? Broken down per fiscal year would be great.

133col Median household income barely rose under Obama but it's definitely not anywhere near 90% low income jobs the average person works a higher paying job then in 2009. where did u get ur facts? Also yes our debt is bad but he cut our deficit in half which was a great achievement considering he had Congress against him.

To all the "debt" comments, here are some facts:
"When Bush’s term started Jan. 20, 2001, the gross federal debt was $5.73 trillion. At the end of his term, Jan. 20, 2009, the gross federal debt was $10.63 trillion. This means that the debt just about doubled under Bush.
The gross federal debt under Obama -- as of April 7, 2015 -- is $18.15 trillion. So, the debt is a little more than triple what the debt was when Bush took office in 2001, $5.63 trillion."
Both presidents "doubled" the debt, but for those that are saying Obama surmounted a huge amount of debt, it is because you've been told that he "tripled" it base off the 2001 number. Which is factually correct, but to say that he was responsible for the 8 years under Bush is false.

When the opposing party elects a President and they undue policies initiated by the previous President, that is not an accomplishment. You pretty much said f&$k this and undid it. Doesn't take a genius to do. Policies implemented under a President and how that impacted America at the end of their term(s) should be the deciding factor in whether or not a President is "good" or "not"... Great vid btw....

He did good and bad for this nation. But I see more negative things about him than positive. He put us in more debt in 8 years than FDR did in 10, and FDR had the Great depression and ww2 going on for him.
Pointlessly put us in 3 conflicts(Libya, Egypt, and Syria)
Sold most of our jobs to China
Screwed over the middle class big time as well as passing the Unaffordable care act.
Look how divided the country became during his time in office(He wasn't the main cause but he was part of it)
I'll admit he did good things got us out of a recession, gave the order to kill Bin laden, among others but to me he was nothing more than a good speech writer and speaker. He was a likeable man to talk to but his way of running the country just sucked.

people in the comments are ridiculous. "why don't you talk about his flaws??" well that's not what the video is about. it's not what Obama's policies were, it's how the country as a while changed during his presidency.
this video isn't saying Obama made smartphones and social media popular, it just happened during his presidency.
you are all just butthurt that there are undeniably positive outcomes of his presidency like lower unemployment and positive international views on our country.

"average americans saw the biggest jump ever in income in 2015" key word "average", that includes the extremely wealthy. if you look at the graph at 0:27 more carefully, you see that the green line representing "the bottom 90%" has effectively flat-lined since 1973.
